PICS! :D

I personally don't carry weapons around with me in public. I don't have a permit for concealed weapons and I'm not about to walk around town with my katana, escrimas, nunchucks, or night stick in hand. My body is my weapon. I used to be goddamn good with it, too.

That's quite a large weapon to be carrying concealed. Are you a cop or something, wearing this on a belt holster?

I'm planning on concealing a Glock 22 .40 (holding 16 rounds--15 in the mag + one in the pipe), but I am a cop so it won't matter so much if its seen. I have a Fobus paddle holster that I'll wear @ 4:00. I'm thinking about getting an IWB holster, too...

nothing.

even when in the ghetto (and i've been in some pretty bad areas), I've never felt worried enough to think about needing protection.

way I figure, if someone comes up to mug you, your more likely to get hurt if you pull a weapon than if you just hand over your wallet (this, of course, is why I always carry two wallets with me in the ghetto. one with $100 in cash, some cancelled credit cards, and my fake ID from my younger days, and my real one, which I'll keep in one of the cargo pants pockets or something).

never been mugged, though. someone did steal my backpack once, though. I was, like, 13 at the time, riding around on the NYC subways with my highschool friends. stupidly, I was standing with my back toward the door, with my pack only hanging on one shoulder. right as the doors were closing, some guy slashed the strap and made off with my backpack. only lost some school books and a walkman.

I have a stun gun and a retractable billy club that I bought legally in Delaware, but can't here. Meanwhile the gang problem where I live is steadily getting worse, and of course, the criminals don't care about the laws so they have their guns and what not.

I was just curious as to what other people do in regards to every day self defense.

where in NJ to you live? I'm in North East Jersey, right outside of Manhattan. maybe prep school sheltered me, but I was never aware of any gang problems.

Hand them your wallet. When they turn to run off, pull out your weapon and shoot them. Obviously it would not be the best situation to attempt to draw your weapon while someone already had theirs pointed at you.

of course, but stealing doesn't justify murder. sure, you can aim for the leg or something, but there's a pretty big chance that you could miss or the person could die from bloodloss.

it just doesn't seem like that big of a deal. your wallet gets stolen, you cancel your credit cards, get a new license, and move on.

the only irreplacable thing I keep in my wallet is my Hot Topic frequent purchaser card thingie. and I'm ok with missing out on that 10% off discount ;)

edit: the idea that you might have been sarcastic didn't occur to me until just now :p so apologies in advance if you were. I'm crap at detecting sarcasm on the intraweb. heh.

I'm not sure if that was sarcasm or not but anywho...........

In California that situation would send the CCW holder to jail for murder.

When the criminal is leaving the threat is gone.

To shoot him in the back would land you in a whole world of hurt. Financially and legally.

I think skyking said it best.

I've been down both roads on this, having a permit and carrying and now, not bothering to do so.
It is a real hassle, and of questionable protection value unless you are really keyed to pulling it out and killing someone. That is a poor state of mind, one I was glad to be rid of.
The rules of carry are simple:
1)If you pull it out, somebody is going to get shot. In other words, never threaten or menace with a weapon, it will land you in the hospital, the morgue, or in jail, in no particular order.
2) basically the same as 1. No one should ever see your gun until it is TOO LATE FOR THEM.

The same intellectual process that allows you to establish that <this is a really bad situation, I 'd better be prepared to get out my gun>, is the same set that says <this is a really bad situation, I am getting me and mine outta here!>.
The only exception is if you and yours are somehow trapped, then it would be damn nice to have artillery. Otherwise, I have become much more comfortable with recognizing and avoiding those situations. Being a gun owner, I am not in any way judging those that would carry, only explaining why I don't any more.

Carrying a gun isn't about "scaring" a mugger off or saving your Doc Martins from being ripped off.
It's about a last resort option. Death or serious bodily harm vs. Leagle and moral problems that you can't begin to imagine.

Those who carry have every right to do so.
Those that don't wish to shouldnt.
It's about chioce and personal responsibility.

There may be negative consequences with either choice.

And for those who talk of carrying Swords and bats, You will be torn apart in any courtroom as someone who went "looking" for trouble.
There is a big difference betweened "concealed" and "I'll bust you up if you mess with me", just look at my sword, kitana, ETC.

Let's just respect each others choices and not try to convert people that are obviously passionate about what they have chosen to do.

Strange, in Texas, if you're reasonably sure you're not going to get your property back, the shooting is justified.

Hehe....

I was once told by a sheriff to bring the body inside your house if you shoot a robber outside. While we were kind of kidding around, there's a big difference depending on where you shoot them, their position, etc. If you pull a firearm use it. There is no threatening or backing them off or even shooting them in a leg/shoulder. If you aim a weapon your objective should be to kill, leave the sharpshooting to those trained in it. It always annoys me on TV when a suspect is shot several times. You always hear people saying "they should have shot him in the leg or something." It's better to empty your clip than allow them a chance to harm you.

Normally weapons can be found everywhere, you just need to know how to use them. But if someone comes at me with a gun, well, I hope for the best and hope he makes a mistake and is close enough to disarm.

They don't have CCW in California, not for average people anyways.

It's not like that elsewhere. You would not go to jail for that in Texas. Once they turned around, and I had my gun drawn I'd yell ,"Stop or I'll shoot." Past that, I'm doing what I have to to get my wallet back, and get a thug off the street.

The notorius Finn violence can't be put into words, I understand. I think its too cold for crimes. I mean criminals are usually trying to get something for nothing, but they don't want to freeze their butts off doing it. ;)

I don't carry anything for self defense, however, the gangs around here are wannabe suburban gangbanger kids, so they are of no threat to me, especially since I am about twice as big as any one of them.

If I do decide to venture into a bad area, I sometimes carry a hunting knife ... just in case ... but I generally don't go to the really crappy areas.

Well, I'm no average guy so I guess that statement could be considered correct. :D

When I took my class here they were very specific about what constituted the use of deadly force.

In many other states you can use deadly force to protect Life and Property.

Here in California if you or yours are not in direct and immediate physical danger the system will not protect you. If you shoot to protect physical property you are considered the criminal.

Oh well, not worth the court costs to keep a few hundered I may have in my wallet anyway.

Like the officer that interviewed me said; If you shoot you will be sued.

Normally I wouldn't carry anything, but I just leave my box cutter(s) in my pocket from work.
