Lets see you throw away most of their multi-conference rivalries that have been going on for years now just to play teams just as good as the ones they already play anyway, sprinkled in with teams that are equally as bad as the ones they play as well.
Their great rivalries....like the grand tour of the service academies? Notre Dame has beaten Navy 41+ straight times, right? That's no longer a rivalry...that's a gimme. Take this year for example, ND played two good teams (USC & Michigan) and got decimated in both of them. I can see why they won't join a conference...they'd be exposed early & often in a conference instead of waiting to get bombed in a bowl game.
Those are their rivalry games though, they took USC to the wire last year and they even beat Michigan when they were ranked #3, it's not like they always get they clock-cleaned but those teams every year. Navy used to be even better then Notre Dame too ya know, thats when they were big rivals and now they simply don't want to drop that game from their schedule, which I have no problem with.
Georgia Tech is no slouch either, and Michigan St. is good when they're not blowing games, also Air Force has good teams from time to time. You can't look at one year when ND doesn't beat 2 of the top 3 teams overall and say they are a joke. Their offense IS very good and their defense IS lack-luster, but to call them a fraud is haterism at its best. Brady Quinn just broke 30-some school passing records and manufactured 2 game-winning 4th quarter drives this year, why wouldn't you want them to play in your bowl game?
