So they gave me a TSX...

I took my Acura TL-S into the dealer because the transmission is acting funny, hard downshifts when you let off the gas, etc. They had me bring it in about 6 months ago for the transmission recall deal, ironically that's when this problem started. So I took it back, and they say they can't get to it this weekend. So they give me a TSX.

I have to say, I'm impressed. Very impressed. The interior is extremely nice compared to the TL, leaps and bounds better. That's the most shocking part. The ride is also suprisingly firm, but gentle over bumps. The steering is sporty and responsive. The brakes are a little jumpy, but communicative. The seats are way more comfortable than my TL's seats. The stereo is better than in my TL (and comes with XM.) It's also a very pretty car, it just looks good, which I never really felt when looking at the pictures. The transmission's manumatic mode is WAY better than the one in my TL, because it does what you want when you want it. The TL's is slooooowww.

I'm just sort of shocked at how much progress they made in just a few years.

Oh, acceleration is gutless. Absolutely worthless. Taking off at a slow pace, at the rate of traffic takes about 4000rpm, just to get moving. Stomp on it, and you don't really get the impression that you're accelerating quickly until over 5000rpm. Now I understand, VTEC, 4 cylinder, whatever, but the problem is this thing takes waaay too long to rev. The v6 in my TL revs much much faster, and makes better torque in the lower rpms.

My conclusion is that if they would put the v6 in the TSX, I would buy one, because it would be spectacular at the TL's pricepoint (~$30k.)

They wouldn't give me one as a loaner to try. And when they had their big sales event a few months ago, they asked me to come in and look at the new TL. I did, and I was thinking for the money, it wouldn't be a bad upgrade. Until they told me my 2003 TL-S with 22,000 miles was only worth $7000 to them. After this TL, I won't be buying another Acura. The Japanese had their chance with me.

If they put a V6 in the TSX, it would take away the point of having a TSX, imo. You definitely shouldn't look into one if you are in need of any serious acceleration, since it wasn't made for that. However, I wouldn't say it is particularly laggy or anything. Seems about right to me.

A lot of the TSX's competition has bigger 5 or 6 cylinder engines...

That's unfortunate, but won't any dealer low ball you on trades? This is hardly a japanese specific phenomenon.

Also unfortunately, thanks to easy financing and never ending new models, the current market is saturated with used cars.

NEVER trade in a car to the stealership. go private party and sell it for what it's really worth.

7k seems waay too low, was it in a crash or something??

NEVER trade in a car to the stealership. go private party and sell it for what it's really worth.

Every situation is unique. It completely depends on the vehicle, the market, and the amount of time somebody has to dedicate to selling it.

If you have a fairly desireable vehicle - like say a high milage camry that you can pawn off for $4000, yeh it will be an easy private party sell.

But if you have a lower milage, not very old vehicle, that is still worth $15,000 or more and doesn't have much of a market, you just aren't going to sell it quick. Plus that $15,000 can counteract upwards of $1000 (or more depending on local sales tax) that you wouldn't have to pay. Plus you just walk in and get rid of it. No hastle.

It's not as black/white as you make it out to be.

There was a TL-S in the previous-generation TL. The new TL is effectively a TL-S in terms of power.

Indeed. I have an '04 TL and I am pretty impressed with the torque and power. It is one of the best cars we have owned.

The TL is just lacking when compared to a Volvo S60 T5, a BMW 330i, a Saab 9-5, etc. I mean, it's fast enough (and an absolute rocket compared to the TSX) but it doesn't feel as good as the rest.

Funny. Between the wife and I, we've owned 4 American cars and 1 Japanese car - 2 Cavaliers, 2 Saturn Ions, and a Corolla. The oldest of the 5 was a 1998. Guess which one had the most problems.

$7k sounds way low for a 2003...

my local acura dealer gave me $10.5k for my 2000 TL last December...
