make heads out of the cut ends and get a female female connector

Isn't a Female/Female connector just another word for an ethernet cable? :p

So what you are advising him to do is just buy another Ethernet cable.. which is what I would concur with... far easier and just as cheap as soldering and buying new connectors.

You're confusing Male with Female Connectors.

A Female/Female Connector is another word for a Coupler. A little piece of plastic that has two female ends on it (read: ethernet jacks).

There is no such thing as an ethernet jack.

Whoopdiefreakingdoo. You know exactly what I mean.

I guess being anal retentive about proper terminology has gotten you real far in life, right?

lol. keep your pants on.

I had a cable get damaged and was able to solder the wires. The individual wires are so small that my stripper wouldn't work so I had to just use a knife to peel away the insulation. After running speed tests I determined that the repaired cable hasn't reduced the bandwith.

and remeber there is a specific order that the colors must be in if you do in fact repair it.
i had a guy go get the tools and try to fix a cable himself and couldn't figure out why his network connection wouldn't come up... he just pushed the wires in at random.

You'll spend at least an hour trying to strip the wires, twist them, solder them, tape them and then realize that you have a 1 inch diameter ball in the middle of your cable and end up buying a new one anyway.

Any cheap places other than *Best Buy* ?

If someone asks if its possible to repair an "ethernet cable", do you really think he's going to need a long roll of cable and the appropriate tools?

Lord knows you came right out of the womb demanding an OC3 connection so you could torrent the latest Blues Clues.

Why are people such asses sometimes? Everyone has to learn at some point. How about pointing in to an "how to" page.

Home Depot or Lowes has it cheap. Or you can buy it online even cheaper.

If you repair it, the twists will be messed up and you may have some general "noise" on the line from the repair job. It's better to repair it if you have some cash.

Otherwise, you can always get a crimper and some RJ45s and a coupler...

It's an RJ45 jack until it's active. Once it's active, it's ethernet. Same with cabling. It's CAT5e UTP until it's active. Then it's ethernet. Otherwise, you'd have issues "pull back that CAT5e cable" "which one?" (you'll often find that the same cable is used for ethernet, telephone, speakers, HVAC, and various miscelleneous uses.

CAT5e is unambiguous. RJ45 is unambiguous. Ethernet is not.

Take a picture of the cable. Depending on where the cut is I'll tell you if you what you should do, though there are those on this board that would strongly advise you against making your own cables, since it's for a home Internet connection and not a mission critical server, there really is no problem in crimping your own.

Twist the friggin wires together, making note of the colors, and insulate well. Electrical, scotch, duct tape, etc) until you can get a proper replacement.

thought this was a great idea.
I have seen telephone people twist the wirings together and it work just fine.

it continues to be RJ45 & Cat5 no matter what is passed through it at any time. :)

Analog circuits, like PSTN connections, can tolerate splices and poor connections far better than a digital connection can. It's not really a problem to twist together most wires used for telephones, but I wouldn't recommend doing that with anything used for networking.

Fscking scarilege!!! Find whoever's responsible and (hopefully it's a he) cut something else ;)
Seriously though, you could :

1) Crimp two male heads on and get a connecting block
2) Replace the cable
3) Try patching the two severed ends (I'm not sure how well this would work - but make sure the pairs are still twisted or your signal will be FUBARed).

Best Buy... cheap? HAHA.

Any local computer store will have them. Probably doesn't even have to be a GOOD local computer store.

Radio shack has them... but they are probably overpriced like Best Buy.

Walmart might be a good place to look if you don't have any comp stores near by or need something that is open RIGHT NOW.
