and I'm posting this on another computer. I have no wireless router, and the cable was around 20-30 foot long. Is there anyway I can repair it? (Obviously I'm a newb), or do I have to get a new cable?

Damn I hate this computer.

UPDATE:
RTJ is online on his computer.

Woot.

Couldn't get the damn insulation off with a knife so I had to burn it. And my speed is faster than before, haha.

Used to be 2.6 Mbps
Took a test and its around 2.7+

You could always stick some heads on each severed end, then attach them with an extension of some sort. O_O

Take this as a chance to buy yourself a long roll of the cable and tools to make your own with.

Why would someone cut your ethernet cable? Do you live in a dorm or something?

Buy yeah, it can be repaired... but if someone cut it once I don't know why they wouldn't cut it again....

Solder it. Just don't mix the colours up. It's a pain in the ass job but it's easy enough. Make sure you use plenty of insulation tape.

Repairing it might be a little counter-productive until you find out why it was cut in the first place though.

If someone asks if its possible to repair an "ethernet cable", do you really think he's going to need a long roll of cable and the appropriate tools?

 or you get a crimper and fix yourself, which would be useful later to make more cables yourself when they get cut.

make heads out of the cut ends and get a female female connector

Isn't a Female/Female connector just another word for an ethernet cable? :p

So what you are advising him to do is just buy another Ethernet cable.. which is what I would concur with... far easier and just as cheap as soldering and buying new connectors.

Well, maybe they got tired of me using the intarweb?

But who is "they"? I'd be more concerned about someone cutting the cable again...

I mean if "they" are tired of you using the intarweb, next time they might just take a sledgehammer to your router instead... so I think you might want to address that issue first.

You're confusing Male with Female Connectors.

A Female/Female Connector is another word for a Coupler. A little piece of plastic that has two female ends on it (read: ethernet jacks).

I guess it depends on the wording. I read a Female/Female Connector as describing what ports are on the connector. Not what you're plugging into it.

Cripes, just plop down $5 and buy a new one.

You'll spend at least an hour trying to strip the wires, twist them, solder them, tape them and then realize that you have a 1 inch diameter ball in the middle of your cable and end up buying a new one anyway.

There is no such thing as an ethernet jack.

Whoopdiefreakingdoo. You know exactly what I mean.

I guess being anal retentive about proper terminology has gotten you real far in life, right?

If you have access to the necessary crimping tool to cut and then push all the little pins in the ethernet connector piece without them touching each other...

I'd suggest just getting a new ethernet cable. If the ethernet cable is all installed in the walls, then you can go get those tools and then fix it.
