so my company has this policy...

i started this job last week (as some of you may know, since i was trying to find out how to quit my old job without burning any bridges). they have a real lax set of rules -- with the exception of electronic communications.

basically, i had to sign off on an agreement that i cannot use IM for any personal correspondence. we use yahoo messenger internally but can only IM each other to share URLs or if a coworker is on the phone and we're talking about the conversation. everything is logged. everything is watched (literally). you can't surf the internet to browse personal pages and you cannot use personal email.

so ... AT is out of the question, which is why i post in the evenings. regardless of my posting time, i'm posting more often than i used to in the past few months... but this is why you'll never see me during business hours 😛

has anyone heard of such a policy? how have you survived? 😛

you quit if you can't comply. otherwise, you get paid, you do as you're told. there's no privacy in a company.

When I worked for a insurance company we were not allowed to use internet at all during business hours. How did I cope? I worked.

or, use wireless verizon or cingular internet and get a PCMCIA card for your laptop. then bring that laptop to work. if you dare.

i'm not asking for reasons to circumvent the policy. i intend to work. but it was more for the reason to ask if it's totally unheard of and to explain my recent absence. 😛

I guess since you are being monitored, you simply have to comply in order to keep the job.

I remember seeing something on a news program over a year ago that many employers have installed hidden cameras throughout businesses...so now you aren't even safe picking your nose anywhere but in a bathroom stall. (Not saying that you SHOULD in public view...I was simply thinking of in your office with the door closed. I mean...who knows...maybe that dot on the wall isn't really just a dot!)

VPN is not an answer if your every move is being watched. 😱

and i don't want to, i promise.

THIS IS JUST A THREAD TO INFORM YOU THAT I MISS YOU ALL... and stuff.

kthxbye!

yeah. last thing is that i really like what i do now, and i'd never trade that for anything, so i have no problem complying with the rule. i just never really predicted that it would be so strict, you know what i mean?

Pretty much normal policy for larger companies. 100+ or so.

You browsing kiddie pr0n causes more work for IT folks. Soo they like you to be limited. I'm surprised they don't use content filters such as SurfControl or Websense.

For the IM part I'm surprised they don't host their own Jabber server. I'd never let my sheep err... users use MSN....

my company has maybe 20 people total (and only 10 in the HQ office). and i forgot to mention, it is an IT company.

i'm not complaining -- it's just a different world for me.

Where I work has something along those lines too, and while it kind of bugged me at first, there is something so productive about being at work and WORKING, ya know? When I used to work in IT, I could do pretty much whatever I wanted online, and wouldn't you know it, I ended up spending way too much time on personal crap. Now that I can't, I don't, and I get a lot more done as a result. After having it that way for a while, I sort of prefer it.

Just set up your home machine with RemoteAccess and use ZoneEdit to keep track of your ip... Open a RA session into your home machine and post away. As long as they're not doing screen caps on your work PC you should be ok...

I'm glad we don't have any type of policies at my office.

Hell, my office sent me onsite for two days to a company that hosted porn online.

Did all their hard drives turn you on? 😛

i am lucky, our policy is liberal, we have websense on the corporate network, but it isn't restricted much

and i have to "test" broadband solutions, so i can use unfettered internet/DSL/wireless all i want

good luck tami

they are! 😱

still, i've no desire to circumvent policy. it's just a change of culture for me mostly -- i came from a work environment that encouraged this type of communication to a work environment that not only discourages it but prohibits it.
