That's awesome, lucky you!

and mugs, most schools do not differentiate between an A- and an A.

I disagree.... I have nothing to backup the claim that I am about to make, but I'm going to claim it anyway:
The majority of quality colleges and universities have different GPA scores for an A-, A, and A+.

My school is ranked #34 in the nation and we do not use the +/- scale although we tried it out and found out that it sucks. So there's one quality school for ya.

Of the schools I've attended, one differentiated between A and A- (but did not have an A+), and the other three did not. I'd venture to say that most schools seem to be going away from the +/- system in general, but that's completely antecdotal.

It could be worse.

My college uses

A
AB
B
BC
C
CD
D
F

It can help or hurt you. On the one hand, if you have a 87, it gives you a slighty higher grade. OTOH, it removes all likelyhood of a professor fudging the numbers a bit to give you the next highest grade. I hate it.

I had a little rant several months ago about how professors seem to be out of touch with the working world. This seems to be another good example.

In the working world, you screw up, you get fired, everybody below you suffers until they find a competent replacement and he/she fixes your mistake.
Seems harsh but it leads to increased efficiency and better care of important documents.

This attitude of handing out good grades that may not of have been earned seems a little strange to me, then I remember that college doesnt actually prepare people for work. You need on the job training to do that.

Take the A-. When college is over and you look back you will realize that no one cares about the difference between A- and A+.

Wow, pretty decent prof

Doesn't seem like someone should have to re-take 'cuz the prof screwed up, but that's a nice option he offered

The +/- thing would bother me less if it actually benefited the student, but most itterations of it I've seen were mearly a way to bring down GPA's so that they didn't actually have to make the classes harder.

Haha that'd be a godsend for me if I was expecting a B+ b/c my school doesn't differentiate with the +/- business. (which is just fine by me!)

Take the A-. It's a good mark & you don't have to do more work :D

This worked out ok for you I guess but what kind of BS is this by the professor? Using some absurd prediction equation to determine what your likely grade was... I don't think so, jerk! You lose my final, you give me a perfect score on it. END OF STORY. I would accept the A- and then write a letter or speak to the dean. That is totally unprofessional and unacceptable.

Ummm... no? He doesn't have to give you a perfect score. He could make you retake it. You could whine to the dean all you want - but good luck getting him to give you a perfect score that you don't deserve.

To be fair, the professor should make it so that no students will have a lower grade due ot hte final.

Both of the colleges that I went to didn't differentiate between a- and a. In fact, i didn't even know such a policy even existed.

I need to crawl out from underneath my rock.

As a teaching assistant I once spilled a beer on a term paper I was about to grade. It got an "A". I didn't even want to read it for fear I would regret my decision.

Now remember, don't drink and grade.

Have you ever graded tests before?! Drinking and grading practically go hand in hand.

Drinking and grading and coeds.
