I got this e-mail from my Chemistry 2 professor:
:Q
I don't really mind since I figured I was going to get a B+ in the class anyway.
Dear Students,
I have some bad news. I have reason to believe that quite a few final exams were lost or misplaced last week. One of those exams was yours.
I will explain a little more about how I have dealt with this problem, but let me get to the part that you will be most interested in... You currently have an "A-" in the class.
At this point you have some options.
(1) You can accept the A-, that's the course grade I will enter into the system next week. If you read more below, I'll explain how you got this score. If you are satisfied with this score then you don't need to do anything.
(2) You can re-take the final exam. It will be similar to the one you took, but not identical. We can do this next week, on Tuesday afternoon. Respond to this email ASAP so that I can make the arrangements.
Good luck with your future studies
-Professor Javier
---------------------
Explanation of how missing final exam grades were dealt with:
In a situation where a final/test has been lost or misplaced, it is customary for the professor to ask the student to re-take the exam. However, I believe that this is unfair to the student, having to force them to re-prepare and re-take an exam whose loss they had nothing to do with. Therefore, the final exam grade that appears on Blackboard is based loosely on your test average. Let me explain some more...
There is a relationship between a student's test average (in your case the average of the first four tests) and their final exam score. Based on this, the final exams of your classmates that I had were correlated with their curved test averages. For this class, the relationship looks like: y=0.985x+101, where x=test average, and y=final exam score. Since I do not have your final exam, I used your test average to generate a final exam score for you. This is the score that appears on Blackboard. Statistically speaking, this score represents the final exam score you would most likely have gotten.
----------------------
If you are satisfied with the above arrangement, you don't have to do anything (you don't even have to reply to this email). You will see all the grade details on Blackboard when you log on to it.
If you are unhappy with the final exam score, you still have the option of taking the final exam again. We can arrange to do this on Tuesday afternoon (8/15). Based on your current test scores and averages...
I would recommend that you not waste your time doing this because you will need a perfect score (100%) to bring you up to the next letter grade (which is an "A").
Please email me as soon as you get this that you want to re-take the final exam so that I can make the appropriate arrangements.
-----------------------
Just to summarize, I apologize for the loss of your final exam. I made the above arrangements to account for the lost grade so that you would not be forced to re-take it. You can still re-take the exam if you want to, and that grade will replace the grade that appears on Blackboard right now.
