So let me get this straight about the PS3....

I've read from a couple of different sources so far that the only cables included in both the $499 and $599 packages is regular yellow/red/white composite cables. Sony is releasing all this media BS, and we all know about the stupid-as-hell price comparison chart from a couple of weeks ago. They keep throwing this 1080p crap around, too. But they don't even include cables out of the damn box to enable anything above 480i (<-- fixed per M4H)??

Ridiculous.

If that's true, that's completely stupid. ut of course they'll sell some adapter for $50 to get the DVI or component or whatever cables.

Fixed. You're not getting anything other than standard NTSC/PAL interlaced out of composite.

Right you are, thanks for the correction. Didn't proofread.....

Sony fanboys will say consoles have never had cables come in the box before. This is true. Another never before? Launching your GIMPED console for $600.

Anyways, you're just being ungrateful! Didn't you know they are including a Blu-Ray copy of Talladega Nights? Oh wait, they could have just packaged in a DVD copy of it and saved some money since you can't watch it in hidef out of the box.

What kind or moron would not get the appropriate cables to connect the source to the display?

Don't blame sony. Blame morons that buy a 4K TV and don't have a freakin' clue.

I really can go on and on about friends, parents of friends, etc that show off their new TV and High Definition. Only to realize that what they've been oggling and "ooohh, ahhhh" is NOT high definition.

If I had a dime for every "home theater" comprised of a 4000 dollar HD display showing NON HD content as a "look at that picture fella! Yep, that's pretty sweet isn't it?" I would never have to work again.

It's to the point that I can't even watch somebody show off their home theater. I don't have the heart to tell them their 10-15 thousand bucks looks and sounds like crap and could easy be fixed with some recabling.

It's called "marketing" and "upselling" and other forms of bilking money out of those who are willing to pay.

That's the way it's always been and that's the way it always will be. I don't see why you're surprised by this. Get a clue.

why?

As a product manager looking over the launch I sure as hell wouldn't.

Seriously... If you're going to ship a movie with the unit, wouldn't you want the movie to look its best out of box? If I was a parent who didn't have a clue and watched Talladega Nights on Blu-Ray, how could you be impressed? I'd be thinking "what the hell?" My $30 DVD player from Walmart looks just like this! Why would that same person then run out and pay $10-$15 more for a Blu-Ray over a DVD that looks just the same? I will never understand these companies...

spidey, you're looking at it from Sony's point of view....everman is looking at it from the consumer's point of view. Sony wants the high-profit margins from the probably $40+ cable, the consumer wants all the components neccessary to get everything out of his/her purchase that Sony has been marketing this whole time.

right, which is unrealistic. The only view that counts is Sony's since they're the ones selling the item.

Why? Most of their customers don't even have an HDTV. It'd just be money down the drain.

They why are they marketing it as such?

+ Bluray
+ New graphics

- Bluetooth remote
- Composite cables
- Same old PS2 controllers
- High price
- Low availability

Excellent point. Instead of raising the cost by $40 to compensate for the HD cables that many consumers couldn't use, we lowered it by $40 for everyone so just the ones who need it spend that money. That is an easy response from Sony. It really is wasted money for someone on a SD TV to get an included HDMI cable and have it sit in a drawer.

I'm sure if sony wanted to put the cables in at cost, it would be sub 5 dollars. It's retarded that it doesn't come with it. Since it's "High Def Gaming", why not pack the cables in, and make all the non-HD owners buy their cables? Or how about the double cable like the 360 had.

It's too bad they didn't do the same with the Blu-Ray drive, or I'd be willing to buy it a few years sooner.

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

In all honesty that seems too miserly of Sony. My Xbox360 came with Component cables and pretty tough Ethernet cable.

This way Sony can put their name on a $10 HDMI cable and sell it for $100 b/c it is "PS3 compatible"

Now I havent looked really at this damn thing but I saw the comment a few times on the controller being the same. Now if that be true is there a chance that the ouput of this thing is still the same like it is for the psone and the ps2 where you can use the same video out cables? That said, and it is true, then alot of people, like myself, have componant out cables alread for the ps2 so y buy, or come with, when I can just use what I already have?
Now I have to go goggle the damn thing and see if I can get a shot of the back for comparison.

EDIT
Upon further reviw of the back of the unit and cables.
It seems to have:
1. HDMI output so for most with a hdtv set up will have that cable already to make use of the supposed 1080P. BUT with all these products going HDMI and your tv set having just the one input you need a switch and thoes I have found to be very expensive if you need more then one 2 in one out manual sectior.

2. The cable end looks to be the same on it as it is for the PS2 and PSONE therefore you may be able to use the cables you have or already out that can be had cheap. Just hopefully it will still give you a 1080P output using them without being forced to use HDMI. Cant really see that hapening but who the hell knows, its Sony, but the output jack does say multi out 😉

then why have an hdmi output to begin with? or better yet why have blu-ray?

cheaper to stick a .0000001c piece of paper saying "you must have a compatible hdmi cable to provide full quality hdtv" than stick a $1 or $2(at sony's cost) cable which they instead sell at $40

Well, the PS3 will last 5 years (Sony says it will last longer, but they will have to put a replacement out in 5 years when Nintendo and Microsoft are doing the same). In the next 5 years HDTV ownership should increase greatly in the US.

As for Blu-Ray - supposedly so games can be bigger, but that's a line of BS. The only thing they could possibly fill 25 GB with is oodles of high-res cutscenes. The game code, textures, models, sound effects, etc could all easily fit on a DVD-9. The few that *need* that many cutscenes could use multiple discs as has been done in the past.

But the real reason for including Blu-Ray is so they can say they have millions of blu-ray players installed vs far fewer HD-DVD players and use that to win the format war. Nevermind that most people won't actually be watching Blu-Ray movies on their PS3s initially, Sony's marketing department has no qualms about outright lying. 😉
