Alright.. I've had it. I go to work, and see 100s of people just walk into their little office buildings, probably go home to the wife and the kids.. live their little lives.. and then poof..

I grow up, resentfully going to college.. and have a band that's been going at it for 6+ years with no signs of stopping.. We want to take a year off college, so we can try and see what we can do as a band for a year or so.. and if nothing happens within that time.. we go back to education/daily boring lives.. but I continuously get slammed by co-workers, family members, parents.. on how much a waste of time it is..

WTF is wrong with trying to be different, trying to be creative and enjoy doing it.. and NOT having a routein..

Example, kids get born.. they learn the "routein" by going to school everyday, they get out.. they get a desk 9-5 job.. get married, have kids.. die.. um.. WTF?! How can these people say... oh that's fine with ME! Buy HEY YOU, your an idiot for trying to make it somewhere with your band.. your only young once.. and wasting all of it on education that can be re-entered at any age.. young or old..

What's the world coming to when more and more people are like robots.. is it wrong for me to question? I just dont get it.. enlighten me..

It's because you suck at music, they're trying to tell you something.

Most people are content with their boring little lives, don't ever let someone tell you what to do with your life. If you fvck up and fall on your face then so be it but at least you tried.

I'm in a similar situation, just out of college at a nice job but I'm bored as hell and can't imagine doing this for the rest of my life. I'm trying to get a band together with some coworkers just to gig on the weekends and hopefully it will save me from this dreadfully boring life I lead post college.

At least there's some creativity left in the world..

And yes.. EXACTLY, I can say.. "At least we TRIED.. unlike the vast majority"

My parents say they want me to have a better life than they did... but my idea of a good life isn't nessessarily living in a 100 room mansion.. it's going out and playing your heart out.. living on bread crumbs? So what? At least I'm doing something I love.. and not something society wants me to conform too.. B.S

A. We have ANY potential..
B. Wether or not we DO suck..
C. Dude hasn't even heard us, yet says we suck..

Perfect example..

if you're already in school, finish your degree, then try out your band thing. if you stop the education train now, its a pain in the ass to get it started back up.

So long as your not living on your parents money then you are free to go ahead and do what you want, if you think this is what is best for you then go ahead and do it. However, please note that these people are try to give you what they consider good advice, so its probably not a good idea to insult them and say they live boring lives, or are just zombies programmed to by "the man" to do what they are supposed to. I mean look, I'm only 21, but I already can see how a bunch of stuff my parents/teachers tried to tell me that I thouhgt were total cr@p at the time ended up being correct.

Im not saying everyone is like this, I'm just saying the majority.. and I think if you don't make it anywhere by the time your 21.. you wont make it anyway.. so if your in school till your 22-23.. you missed the boat.. and you can never go back

Btw, what do you play? What kind of music do you play? Where in WI are you at?

Need another guitarist if you're close to IL? :)

Juss me or another whiny bitch who wants to do squat on their parent's money?

If you have or will move out on your own, work a ****** job to pay for your life, and then try the band thing then go for it, i think thats fine. but if u want to live at home, do ****** for a few years playing music thinking you can leech off of em, quit ur whinin and suck it up.

:D We're metal.. No poppy sissy crap ether.. the emo fad is ruining the world..

+ if my band doesnt work.. I quit being a musician.. I think a band needs roots that extend deeper than the eye's can see.. I've known my bandmates since I was 3... and we could never replace eachother.. if we broke up, we'd never hire another guitar player or bass player.. a band will hardly last 4-5 years just picking a guy up the street.. the chemistry that happens in peoples minds is always changing.. fights are easier to get out of hand, you have an easier time saying "allright thats it, screw you guys, im finding another bandmember"... that's my firm believe..

Juss me or another whiny bitch who wants to do squat on their parent's money?

No.. live with my band in a 4br studio...

It's really hard to get back to school once you leave. I'm in the process right now. I'm 22 and I'm looking at maybe another 1-2 years before I'm done. For personal reasons, I needed to leave where I was... but it's an almighty pain in the ass. I think it'd be easier for you to finish school, keep on polishing yourselves, try to get some college performance-style thing going, and then give it a solid go once you're out.

But yeah, don't listen to anyone who tells you to just quit. It's pretty much always better to regret the things that you have done, rather than the things you wish you had done.

I agree with you Sqube.

I'm definitely staying for at least 2 years.. afterwards, seeing it how it is.. might take 7-8 credits opposed the the "Full Time" 12. That's a year or so down the road.. but I'm not giving up, and yes.. I'd rather regret it and say I at least tried.. than feel like an idiot so just passed up potentially the greatest thing that could have happened..

here try this:

1) think of business idea
2) save money
3) pull max credit/debt
4) convince a couple other ppl to give you their money
5) start business
6) if fail, go back to 1, if succeed, proceed to 7
7) BLING BLING
8) live like a playboy

Hey OP.... people are a lot smarter than what you genarlize as a robot lifestyle.

You can do what you want, but you are a robot yourself for wearing your shirt on your sleeve. You take offense from the same people that will make you successful (listen / buy your music). Don't know how to put it in words... but you aren't being very non-robotic.

Do what you want to do. But from your wording, I think you think of yourself as a person who "missed his shot" type failure. And justifies wasting the rest of his life trying to prove himself right.

There are plenty of your type that think way too highly of themselves at the late night downtown district getting and staying drunk.

I would rather be your definition of a robot than my definition of a wanna be.

That's because you're being an idiot. Let's say you quit your job and don't take any classes. What are you going to do all day? I guarantee that you won't be working on your music for most of that time. You've been "at it" for 6 years and nothing has happened, what makes you think that quitting your job will change that?

If you've been in a band for 6 years, then you're probably well into your 20s. If you haven't hit it big in the music industry yet, then you're not going to. You would have to have phenomenal musical talent to do anything at this point, and if you were already phenomenal then you wouldn't need to quit your job at all.

You want an excuse to shirk responsibility. Your friends and family are trying to show you that you have some stupid ideas, and that avoiding the real world is not a wise idea. It's still your choice though. By the way, you don't have to be "a robot" if you want to live in the real world and get an education. Change your major to dance or something. Today I observed quantum entanglement and last week I made a liquid nitrogen bomb, but I guess I'm just a robot because I don't dream about being an angsty rock star.

Oh, I was under the impression that you wanted to just drop everything. Finish school and save up some money. AT LEAST have a part-time job to help pay the bills while you do your music thing. See if you can do 20 hours/week

lol, I really enjoyed your post. I rarely see someone with this much teen angst these days, especially in college. Hey man, if you really want to give it a shot with your band, go for it - but if you haven't gotten anywhere in 6 years...? (******, some bands only last 6 years :p) Either way, your overgeneralization about people and their robotic lives is just ridiculous. It may surprise you, but some people actually like their jobs, and do enjoy settling down with a wife (or husband) and kids. I mean I guess that's not totally badass, but you try starting a family/making ends meet/raising kids and then talk about how boring and trite it is. I think you're selling a lof of people short here, and hey, maybe yourself too. Bottom line, do whatever you want, at least then you can't look back with the regret of not giving it a shot.

You are unique. Just like everyone else.

You're non-conforming in the same way that everyone else is.

That being said, do whatever you want, its your life. If you are gonna go against the grain, do it and stfu about it. If you really believed all that you said, you wouldnt need to come here or anywhere for reassurance.

Are you paying for all your expense or is your parents paying for them? If your parents are still paying for any of your living expense, then you're just a robot leeching off the good folks working to make a living and to make the world a better place for teenagers like you

I've never been in a band, but from observation, it seems that musicians have a hard time just "letting it go" and moving on. Anything is possible, but some things don't work out the way you hope.

I find comfort in my routine lifestyle and I couldnt imagine living any future years of my life without a routine.
