I'm in a similar situation, just out of college at a nice job but I'm bored as hell and can't imagine doing this for the rest of my life. I'm trying to get a band together with some coworkers just to gig on the weekends and hopefully it will save me from this dreadfully boring life I lead post college.

word.

Do what YOU want. Who gives a sh1t what other people think of your choices. Do what makes you happy, you only live once, you only have one real shot. So.. take it.

Dont you still live with your parents?

I wish. That would save me $1,800 a month in rent. I would be able to retire when I'm 40 if I still lived with my parents.

We want to take a year off college, so we can try and see what we can do as a band for a year or so.. and if nothing happens within that time.. we go back to education/daily boring lives.. but I continuously get slammed by co-workers, family members, parents.. on how much a waste of time it is..

WTF is wrong with trying to be different, trying to be creative and enjoy doing it.. and NOT having a routein..

Example, kids get born.. they learn the "routein" by going to school everyday, they get out.. they get a desk 9-5 job.. get married, have kids.. die.. um.. WTF?! Buy HEY YOU, your an idiot for trying to make it somewhere with your band.. your only young once.. and wasting all of it on education that can be re-entered at any age.. young or old..

What's the world coming to when more and more people are like robots.. is it wrong for me to question? I just dont get it.. enlighten me..

go for it. take the road less traveled! Follow your dreams!

i rather regret failure than what if...

I agree, just cover your a$$. What I mean by this is make sure you have a backup plan in case your music career doesnt work. I would be hesitant about going into a plan like this with 100% of myself. I would have to many conservative reservations about career/financial stability.

Well, some people don't like to see others follow their life's dreams and being ambitious.

Others are probably just telling you what they think you need to hear, thinking that you will "come around" and get your head back in reality. The reality is that very few people make it in music/show business. Your chances of success are slim.

Still, I say go for it. At least you won't look back years from now and say, "I should have done this, or I should have done that."

Best of luck! Oh, and remember me when you are famous mkay? :p;)

Exactly. Your parents, co-workers etc are not slamming you out of jealousy or misunderstanding. Theyre just well aware that a musician has an EXTREMELY uphill battle to fight in order to support themselves on their music.

You are better off finishing college first. Face it - you're not going to go anywhere with music for several years, at best. Most likely, it'll go nowhere, but itll be fun.

You'll have to support yourself during that time. You can either do it by flipping burgers, manual labor, or some other inane job that a HS diploma will net you nowadays. Or you can finish college, and get a much better day job. Either way, you'll be moonlighting.

Sure, you could pick up the education later, but you're already midway through it. In the music biz, you are going to have to deal with a lot of hardship that is not going to be pleasant. If you can't handle the unpleasantness of college, what makes you think you can handle the struggle of being a musician?

Sex, drugs and rock and roll are great and all, but they're not mutually exclusive with an education.

not exactly but your raising the question leads to 2 scenarios:

1) suicide. emo style.

2) entrepreneurship, strike it rich or go bust.

And in this great country, #2 is very doable, even if you fail multiple times.

No.. live with my band in a 4br studio...

Im 19.. not in my late 20s.. and yes, have been in the same band since i was merely 13..

is there anything wrong with going to school 2 years, then (with a better job and 2 years of college under yur belt) take only GERs (General Education Requirements).. 2 classes, and work full time, and continue with my band... i dont see a problem with that.. but im sure 99% of all other people do.. do explain whats wrong with that philosophy.. not quitting college, but cutting back.. just doing GER's so I dont have to friggen take english when I come back for a PC degree..

Better to try and fail, than live your life in regrets.

I know where you're coming from. I'm 22, in college studying business, have a boring developer job and virtually no free time. After taking a break from college and spending a couple of years in Brazil living life, I just wonder to myself why the hell I don't just quit school and move back and do what makes me happy.

Stable job = stable income

If you've got the income or financial means, live life however you want!!! MOST PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO STEP OUT OF THE BOX.

Coldkilla, those people are just jealouy because you're trying to do something unique.

They don't want you to have a better life than them, so they drag you into the miserable fate.

Don't waste your life at a job, going to home to a soccer mom wife, standing in line all weekend at Sam's Club with your screaming kids.

Do something interesting that gets people talking. The whole "go to college, get a job, get married" scheme is a trap. It's a fool's fate.

There are a lot of people who resent people who have the ability and desire to chase their dreams. It's almost like people don't want other people to be sucessful.

You need to go out and try now. You will regret it if you don't.

Id finish college first. With a degree, nobody can take it away from you. With a half of a degree, its pretty much worthless. The procedure to get back into classes to finish up a degree is a pain in the butt. Keep doing your band thing, maybe spend weekends full time on it or something.

It's what you do in the mean time that counts :).

Everyone has there own thing and you think your the only one being creative? spare me!

Alot of my friends are in there own band, or in the same one as eachother and they do other stuff besides the band to be creative.

You dont have to be in a band to be creative, you can do other crap, art, take great pictures, teach your kids something new (how to reformat a PC at the age of 8!), build lego houses, create new theory's of phsyics/math, create a new video game, experience other culters, etc, etc...

Just becuase you're in a band, that doesn't make you top ******. It seems like a lot of band people think they are (I never get what I want, the mans pushing me down, our band is going no where!) The reason they go no where is because they SUCK. Look at the top bands , they even make spinoff bands because there's is sucking (blink 182, old 80s bands, a crapload of high school bands).

granted there are some pretty mundane people out there...dont get me wrong.

sounds like some teenage angst going on -_-

I did something similar for 8 months. Quit my job, moved in with friends and went out on the road playing 5 days a week.

It didn't work for me, but the rest of the guys still do it and make good money at it.

Am I sorry I did it? No way, I wouldn't give up those memories for anything. Did family and friends try to talk me out of it? Oh yes!

It wasn't about making it famous for me. It was trying something different for a while. 'A while' turned out to be ~8 months for me and I decided to do something else.

A year is not that long to take off. mpitts is right, you WILL regret it. I can promise you that. I am so glad I did it.

Jesus, you're thinking about taking one year off of college and you're worrying about it being a huge deviation from the norm?

Christ, you're such a rebel. You're a grown-up; Take you're god damn year off...

[Edit] Not sure where that rage came from :). Anyway, your school shouldn't bat an eyelash at you leaving for one year, and you won't forget everything you've learned in that short a time. I took a semester off of school to do outside-the-norm stuff and came back fine. I'm currently in my final of four years of doing outside-the-norm stuff before returning to the mainstream career track, and don't foresee any problems.
