i just watched the video of cattle in the kosher slaughterhouse, and how the cow's trachea were ripped out, yet when dumped out of the machine they were still trying to escape their misery

it's because of that among other reasons i am now giving vegetarianism a shot again

i tried back in high school about 6 years ago, but the taste of meat kept bringing me back. i'm going to try to ween myself off of it now. wish me luck

UPDATE: the slaughterhouse is a kosher slaughterhouse

Make sure you still eat animal products, there are certain amino acids that your body needs that are only found in animals and animal products. :)

Agreed. If "the taste of meat kept bringing him back", then that's probably an indicator of his success this time (or lack thereof). :p

Damn, that's horrible. I honestly never knew such things existed. I never thought humans could be such violent and careless creatures.

you see that dude make a 15 footer into the waste basket.. man that was a hell of a shot, with a trachea nonetheless.

Im not sure about other slaughterhouses but in order to be "Kosher" i believe the cows must be slaughtered in a specific fashion. Most non kosher slaughterhouses kill the cows more humanely (reletively speaking) I'm sure PETA targeted this video for that reason alone, but they need to qualify that video in the sense that the treatment was necessary for relegious purposes not for "fun" as it were.

to be fair, the article i originally read it from did mention it was a kosher slaughterhouse, but i thought they were just making a joke about it

i will update the original post corrispondingly, but aside from removing the trachea, everything else is pretty much on par, same goes for horse slaughtering too

really i thought that they use a piston type contraption to shoot a "bullet" through the head of the cow before bleeding it, usually when the cow is knocked out . Maybe not I dont know but people have been killing animals quite brutally for thousands of years, now its just automated :)

"Orthodox Jewish and Moslem dietary laws forbid consumption of meat from animals which are not "healthy and moving" when killed. Religious orthodoxy today interprets this to mean that kosher meat must come from animals who have not been stunned before being killed. They must be fully conscious when it's done. Further, in order to qualify for the kosher stamp of approval, the animal must have its throat slit in a particular way. The consequences of this interpretation of kosher slaughtering are a travesty for the poor creatures involved."

"There is a debate going on now among orthodox Jews as to whether to allow animals killed by more humane methods to be considered as kosher. In Sweden, at least, the Orthodox Rabbis have come to allow animals to be stunned before slaughter. I like to think there is some possibility that the American Rabbis will follow suit. Though kosher procedures take the cake when it comes to cruelty, even under the best of conditions slaughtering is no day at the beach."
