The law:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21753.htm
Yielding for Passing

21753. Except when passing on the right is permitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall safely move to the right-hand side of the highway in favor of the overtaking vehicle after an audible signal or a momentary flash of headlights by the overtaking vehicle, and shall not increase the speed of his or her vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle. This section does not require the driver of an overtaken vehicle to drive on the shoulder of the highway in order to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass.

California law TELLS YOU to use the horn and flash your brights to make these assholes move out of the left lane.

No it does NOT . . . read it again - in BOLD - fixed]
Code

Passing on the Right

21754. The driver of a motor vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:

(a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn.

(b) Upon a highway within a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in the direction of travel.

(c) Upon any highway outside of a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width and clearly marked for two or more lines of moving traffic in the direction of travel.

(d) Upon a one-way street.

(e) Upon a highway divided into two roadways where traffic is restricted to one direction upon each of such roadways.

The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of a slow moving vehicle from the duty to drive as closely as practicable to the right hand edge of the roadway.
IF passing on the right is permitted, you do NOT have to yield. ;)

SLOW-moving vehicles should drive to the right.

learn to read the VC [or fina a better example] :p

This reminds me of that George Carlin bit. Anyone going slower than you is an idiot. Anyone going faster is a maniac.

I just don't care enough to bother to get angry. I just blow past them on the right. It doesn't really affect my driving speed, and all I do is tilt my steering wheel for a moment.

They tried to pass a road rage law here in FL but Gov Bush veto'd it. Basically it said you had to get over from the fast lane if someone wanted to pass. Of course, the media ran with it and said it makes speeding legal, or penalized folks for going the speed limit. It said nothing about having to speed if someone was behind you going faster, just that you had to yield to them.

Ah well. Not like it'd matter anyway, I can't see cops writing tickets for that (often enough that it'd change anybody's driving habits).

If they are doing the speed limit, why should you care.

You are breaking the law by doing 80.

Whoopty do...that has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion.

Has everything to do with it.

You are choosing to break the law and complaining about some-one else.
The "FAST" lane is intended for people that need to flow faster than a car in another lane.

Unless the law says keep right except to pass, you are in the wrong on both counts.
Speeding and bitching about some-one else that may be obeying the law.

Rofflemayo at people trying to argue that going the speed limit on a highway is such a noble thing to do.

the law doesn't say that . . at least in California . . the link purported to show this was purely BS misunderstanding.

it is COURTESY to allow someone to pass . . . some pushy/dangerous drivers deserve no courtesy. ;)

Nope. He was speeding too. I was just speeding at a slightly faster rate. Remaining in the far left lane when there is nobody to your right is just plain stupid when faster traffic is coming up behind you and passing you. If I'm going slower than other cars in the left lane I move over. It irritates me to no end when people get this "I'm going the speed limit and I'm going to teach you a lesson" attitude. I wish I could just run them off the road sometimes.

You don't honestly hog the passing lane and refuse to move to the right when someone tries to pass you, do you?

i was in the fast lane doin 120-130 last night, with the windows down. When going that fast, "weaving" becomes necesary.

what does "honestly" have to do with it?

Well. i don't "jump" out of the fast lane because some impatient ass insists on something that is NOT their right. ;)

i love to see ANY of the posters here show a single link to a state LAW that says "you must move out of the fast lane to allow someone to pass" . . .

. . . all you EVER see is "Speed limit 70 MPH" and "SLOWER traffic keep right" . . .

agan, it is COURTESY to move over to allow someone to pass . . .

. . . and i am an extremely curteous and safe [and 'fast' driver] . . . :)

. . . just like the rest of you guys.

:D

BTW, if "i" am going faster than the flow of traffic, i have ZERO problem with passing on the RIGHT [and have the driving skills to do so]

My solution when this happens is pass them on the right, move back over in front of them..then slow down to a crawl and give them a taste of their own medicine. If they try to pass...speed up, then slow again if they move over. They will eventually get so annoyed and your revenge will be complete.

Well, after only reading the first page, here are my thoughts:

4 lane highway--I'm almost never in the left lane. I'm usually going around 9.5 over instate (MI) which is about 80. Only in the left lane when passing, when my exit is coming up on the left within about 2 miles, or some of our perpetual construction has closed the right 3 lanes. Out of state, same rules apply, but I usually keep it to 5 over.

3 lane highway--occassionally in the left lane, same speeds, will hop over for people*dangerous arse holes* with important business. Unless of course the highway is packed, there's a huge line in front and behind me, and some ass just wants to get another car length up so he can tailgate someone else.

2 lane highway--will move over if possible, maybe you should slow the fvck down if I'm already passing everyone on the right (lots of semis in Michigan--the only restriction on trucking we have is to stay off the sidewalk, if they can).

I love the fvcktards that are so impatient that as you pull ahead of a semi and try to give yourself a decent amount of room to pull in front of the truck with (thus letting the poo head ahead) , they whip out from behind in front of the semi with about an inch to spare, zoom ahead on someone's rear, cut to the right in front of a minivan with a family in it, cut back over in front of a top heavy SUV, then cut in front of the car ahead of you with about 1/4 of a car length clearance in front and back, and then continue at the SAME SPEED they were going...but about 3 whole car lengths further ahead.

They then consider themselves to be l337 drivers...

I've been driving around LA for the last 5 days and have noticed the very same thing. Something has changed out here. Even when not clogged, the freeways just don't move like they used to simply because of a much higher % of people doing the speed limit and even under in the fast lanes.

Which freeway? :) /me commutes on the 405N.

It irks me whenever I find out that 3 cars ahead of me is someone who's driving 55mph (when the speed limit is 65mph) on the fast lane and there's no one in front of them for miles >.< It'll look like this convoy of cars for at least 0.5 mile all because of this one car in front that doesn't want to drive faster (and sometimes, you can't even move to the right because the next lane is matching your speed...)

one thing i HAVE noticed . . . when you finally pass that F L slow car, itis usually an Elderly driver . . . i guess some of them are terrified to drive and shouldn't . . . but do anyway . . .

also, i have know some young people who ONLY drive in the Fast lane (merge merge merge merge . . . stuck) . . . not sure if it is lack of training or common sense :p
