there is no such thing on a two-lane road . . . if it is 3 lane then the trucks may be restricted to the TWO right lanes . . . ANY vehicle may be in the FAR RIGHT lane as long as they are doing the MINUMUM speed [if there is one]

Reality: if someone comes up behind you, and is able to pass you in the right lane, that means you are NOT really passing traffic, you're just blocking the left lane.

If you're driving 56 mph in the left lane, and the speed limit is 55, you have zero right to be bitching at someone who's doing 80 and wants to pass your ass on the right.

What if traffic in the right lanes are averaging 45-50 because of slow big-rigs? [up a steep grade for example]

If they are averaging 45-50 and I can go around you on the right, they're still being LLBs. And most grades steep enough for big rigs to have to slow that much have a climbing lane.

try the 3-lane Yucaipa Grade on i-10 up from Redlands [they are Finally fixing this dangerous stretch of road] . . . posted speed limit is 65 and the average speed - in traffic - in the Fast Lane is 55-60 MPH due to big rigs barely pulling 45 in the TWO slow lanes . . . now there ARE stupid and dangerous drivers weaving in and out of the right lanes at 80 mph . . . :Q

i call BS . . . cops are tightening their "grace" to BELOW 10MPH.

my favourite incident was recent: i was in the fast lane folliowng a line of cars +10 MPH when a "hunter" CHP pulled onto I-10 . . . naturally everyone slowed EXCEPT the SUV behind me . . . i pulled to the right was quickly as i thought safe [with the CHP obviously observing] . . . but not quickly enough for the moron behind me [who evidently didn't see the "reason" for the slowdown] . . . he kept flashing his brights and following so i could read lipread his words in my rearview mirror . . . when i pulled right he took off like a jack rabbit [using part of the shoulder] and sped away followed shortly by the CHP . . .

i can't imagine the ticket he got, deservededly so.

Just because they are enforcing speeding laws doesn't mean they are getting people for aggressive driving or impeeding the flow of traffic. I said you could get ticketed for both at the same time (meaning they will get you for speeding too, even if it's 80 in a 70). I'm just glad they are realizing other hazards and getting them too.

edit: obviously this varies by state laws and local enforcement.

I almost always decelerate when someone does this. I do this to tailgaters also.

being oblivious to cars behind you that want to pass. A driver should be alert of the cars behind, ahead and to the side. If a car approaching from behind is traveling faster than you it makes sense that if the right lane is clear, to move over and let them by. Refusal to do so should result in losing your liscense.

That's incorrect. Even if they were the only car on the road, cruising in the passing lane is illegal regardless of speed.

 
A few weeks back I saw a car get pulled over for this. I'm flashing my high beams trying to remove the lane hog from the left lane so I can pass the two morons that are driving next to each other at the same speed in the right two lanes.. I see an unmarked cop car flying up behind me so I get back into the middle lane. He proceeds to high beam the lane hog, and he still refused to move. After a minute or so the cop pulls the driver over for refusing to move.

Keep right is what I was taught.I agree people need to stay to the right/middle unless there is a left side exit soon.
 
Americans just have no lane discipline. It's not even taught in drivers' ed, but it should be, because it's the law in most states.

Oh, and my brother got an LLB ticket a couple years back. He showed it to me, all pissed off, and said "I was going the speed limit and I still got a ticket for just driving in the left lane" etc. I said "Good. You deserved it." He was genuinely shocked - and then pissed cause I didn't side with him on it.
