The macs we used in my television production class in high school used to crash all the time, even running OS X. I used to lose what I was working on in iMovie all the time. I was unimpressed.

They have so much great free software on there that it was probably worth the money alone.

iGarage was what sold me but I'm going to make it my dedicated multimedia computer and store all my photography, mp3's and piano compositions on there.

Now that I have gotten serious about music and photography I really understand why professionals like these so much. They are 10x easier to use and bug free. The software is all designed beautifully.

I don't understand the mac people who swear they are better. My WinXP machine never crashes is plenty easy to use and works great. Photoshop doesn't work any faster on the Mac despite their claims. I use Picasa 2 for just browsing all the photos I have on here...it's free and works great.

Let's see..I took a photoshop class and they had all mac systems with wacom tablets...I had those things crash on me..the tablets were not very quick to respond (I could draw a brush-stroke...wait 10 seconds and it would show up)....Ended up not learning much in that class.

Now....not saying they are bad. But no better than my XP system. And it would cost you a LOT more money to buy a Mac that is comprable to my system with an AMD X2 CPU, 2GB RAM and 2 74GB Raptors in RAID 0.

I must admit that their LCD's are killer though...awesome stuff.

Well it's not even the stability that sells me. It's the simplicity. It's just the ability to use all their software without even having to think about it. Everything is just so intuitive and user friendly.

edit: I know it's really slow compared to Windows based systems but you really don't need that much horsepower for the things I am using it for. Computers today are way overpowered for most of the things people use them for. Saving money on old but still good technology and concentrating on a user friendly package seems like a great solution for your typical computer user.

I don't get the user friendly thing either....no more simple than Windows...to me at least. But then again...I just have a knack for using computers...never really had to be taught stuff just did it on my own. Kinda hard to see the user friendly perspective for me. I just find Mac's harder to use because I don't use them as much as Windows so I don't know exactly where every setting and such is...easy problem to fix though.

I have to admit that i have no problems with Xp these days...and of course have you ever tried to game on a Mac? It's worse than a joke :p (the few games they can run, run like sh1t (d3 is a great example))...

You know what's funny? I never had my Windows 98 or Windows 2000 system crash except for the problem I had with Creative's drivers and Win2k once. Once I got Win98 up and running it really didn't have any problems. I tend to maintain the OS install rather than let things get out of hand and then just reformat. I hated reformatting because it took forever to reload all my programs so I just learned how to keep my installation running smoothly. Not something the average joe would do though.

apples ENTIRE business model is based on user friendly-ness, and its true, because they make the mad money. technically it is(its got to be) more simple than windows because apple spends more money on UI design than MS does(ever did, and most likely ever will).

and i know EXACTLY what your talking about with the mac menus being hard to find. all my friends who are PC only have this entire, almost backwards, logic about where menus and the like should be placed.

Apple does not make their LCD's they only put the plastic bezel around it. LG.Philips makes the panel. Anyway, Dell's are much cheaper for the same screen area and higher quality (the newest ones).

I would say that Dell LCDs are better than Apple LCDs. My company recently purchased a 19" and a 20" widescreen from Dell and the screens are absolutely gorgeous. I stopped at CompUSA later and looked in the mac section and compared the LCDs while I was there. They look pretty cool in silver but the picture isn't as good as the Dells.

I *almost* bought a mac mini while I was there. I have to admit it's a sexy machine in person. The size blew me away. I'll get one when Yellowdog linux offers support for the phone modem :) :) :)

Just a few sign ups away :p

How many sign ups do you actually need before you get a free one? Guess the same question can be said about the free XBox 360s.

free mini mac - 10

free xbox 360 - 8

For the xbox360 I have 5 referrals so far, just 3 to go. The best part is they're giving away the XBox 360 Premium Edition

It probably won't ship until January 2005 but that's fine with me since I'm saving $399 :)

You meant 2006 right?

There is a forum at Apple discussing incompatibility with some LCDs and some VGA issues. It might be worth it to check it out.

well, assuming that the OP says he likes his mac mini, implying he's used it already, i think his LCD/VGA monitor works just fine.

No need for a slap. I purchased a 15" powerbook recently and love it. All the haters have no doubt never bothered spending time with OSX. Why else would M$ be trying to copy it in Vista?

actually, all the movie gurus who are making animated films like Nemo, Toy Story, etc use mac desktop systems.

Well, except for the fact that 99% of the multimedia/graphics/publishing industry uses Macs. :p

The thing is, you can uninstall pretty much everything that apple puts on the computer, you can't with microsoft. That's were the problem begins. You can uninstall safari, you can't uninstall IE.

I love my Powerbook.... I've had one program crash so far in the month I've owned it... guess who made it? MICROSOFT!!!... it was Microsoft word, I was typing notes in class and all the sudden it just had the loading thing come up and that's all it did for hours. So, I had to force quit it.

They may be using mac workstations, but the real workhorses are the render farms. I know Pixar used to have a Sun based render farm, but I believe since 2003 they have been all x86 CPUs running linux

Wow...someone listened to my advice :)

I'm going to get one for myself for Christmas. Kind of a recording/kids browsing computer. The kids have Macs at school so I thought I'd give them an edge.
