That pretty well sums it up for me as well. I feel like a retard sitting in the corner when I sit down to a Mac.

lol, so true...it may be because i've used windows for so long, but it just seems way more intuitive than mac os.

i sit down in front of a mac and i just go DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....

it's like i've never seen a computer before

you probably go "durrrrrrrrrrrrr" because you've got to be an idiot to not figure out how to use a mac in like 20 seconds.

then i must be an idiot because i spent 20 minutes in front of one and managed to figure some things out, but its just completely different than on windows.

How so? You get rid of things by putting them in the trash. You want to 'get rid' of the disc (or whatever is connected to your computer), so you put it in the trash. Maybe it's just my low-tech mind, but it seems pretty clear-cut to me.

I'd say people think it is slightly awkward because of what the trash can represents. When you delete a file, you are disposing of it with no intention to ever use it again (for the most part). Removing a physical device or piece of media isn't the same at all. The vast majority of the time, you have the intent to use it again, so throwing it away makes no sense.

I can see it both ways. If it were a recycle bin it would have made more sense. :)

Linux is better but still can be frustrating for the non-technical user. Mounting drives as opposed to popping your media in and going. Network setup can be confusing as well although that had gotten a lot better last I used a Linux OS. Mac OS I can't even comment on as I know nothing about it. It could be easy, it could be hard. From your experience it sounds like I'd have just as much trouble.

haha, my thoughts exactly. i don't see how that is intuitive.

if you don't like that method, you could always press the eject button on the top of the keyboard.

or you could right click on it and eject.

or you could go into macintosh hd and press the eject image next to the drive name.

where's the eject button on the keyboard? is it labeled eject?

how do you right click with only 1 mouse button?

how do i get into the macintosh hd?

all that, except for the eject button (if its labeled eject) is assuming someone is already familair with a mac.

You can't? Because I can, and, as I mentioned before, I have a low-tech mind.

i can't? hm... i'm pretty sure i just did. yup... i upgraded the memory myself. wow... go me for doing the impossible.

they last much longer by still being aesthetically pleasing, not being ridiculously thick or heavy, and, as it was explained to me by my computer tech friend, the architecture apple uses in their machines makes it so that the components will last longer. that's why you spend more money on apple computers than pcs... because they will last you longer. apple knows that if they put out computers that will fail at a rate pcs do, people won't buy them because they're more expensive and will have about the same longevity as a pc. you're not just paying for looks... you're paying for longevity and functionality.

to some people, it's worth it. to some others, it's not.

the eject button on the KB isnt intuitive either, if you have never used a Mac you will have no idea WTF it is anyway

I do think that it's unlike Windows' approach, but what else are you supposed to think about the function of that eject button? That eject graphic is used on many non-Mac devices such as stand-alone DVD players.

wtf? you mean if you've never used an electronics device ever and have never seen the strange, cryptic-looking symbol in your life.

gee, i wonder what the little button on the top right corner of the keyboard does... it doesn't have any words or letters on it. i can't figure it out. it's just some strange character i've never seen before... is that japanese? someone help! macs are so hard to use!!!

you get a mouse that has multiple buttons, duh. or, holding down the one-button mouse button is the same as right-clicking.

there's nowhere that says that you HAVE to use the one-button apple mouse in order to use a mouse on a mac. besides, there are new mice out by apple that have the right-click capability. http://www.apple.com/mightymouse/

Um, it's pretty straightforward. If you've used any electronic with an eject button, you should know the symbol. If you had used PCs before, and were used to a two button mouse you would probably use one anyway. And...it's labeled 'Macintosh HD' right on the frellin desktop...kinda hard to miss that.

Edit: As I mentioned, I'm new to Mac, and I am rather low tech...I figured it out pretty easily.

by virtue of having used an electronics device in the past. anything that you've had to press play or fast forward or rewind or pause or something undoubtedly had an eject button as well. seeing how the symbols for play, rewind, ff, pause, and stop are universal, one would deduce that eject is as well. therefore, logic would dictate that the eject logo on the top corner of the keyboard would eject a disc that you put into the drive bay.

also, there's an icon on the top right corner of the desktop that shows a hard drive image and it says "macintosh hd"... i think that's easier to say than "click here if you want to access various files, folders, accessories, and whatnot... it's all the stuff that you've got stored on your hard drive, except it's easily categorized so you can find stuff a lot quicker" under the icon. also, humans are curious by nature... so, someone would click on the icon without too much fear that the laptop will explode beneath their hands. once they've clicked on it, any idiot could figure out what is going on.

actually i had a walkman back when they looked like WW2 army phones, and any number of random eletronic devices, and i honestly never paied attention to what the eject symbol was,

as i said i never knew there was one untill my school got those ET looking Imacs and put them everywhere, hell i even owned a PowerPC back in like 98, first computer i owned was a mac, running OS 8.xx its KB didnt have an eject button, the CD drive had a button and IIRC it wasent labled it was just there

But I don't have a 2 button mouse to plug in. How would I know that keeping the mouse button held down would do same as right clicking?

I already stated that the eject button would be simple if its labeled eject...

How would I know what the Macintosh HD does? I guess if one was already knowledgeable about PCs, you could infer that it stands for hard drive, but why would I look at the hard drive for a way to eject a cd or even a flash drive.

that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. How the hell does someone who's never used Windows learn how to go to 'My Computer', or the internet, or go to control panel, or anything at all? They're simple things that you learn as you go along. That's the best thing about both of these OSes: take the time to use them and learn for a few days and then you'll see how simple they both are. From then you can determine which one you like best (instead of bashing what you don't know).
