So how many Android tablet flops and disasters will it take?

Whoever thinks that the Nook Color is a viable, mass-market alternative to the iPad is horribly misguided. It's marketed by Barnes and Noble as an E-reader, NOT an Android tablet. People who know about the capabilities of one after rooting are in the large minority of potential purchasers.

Plus, as previously stated in this thread, if it was even just MEETING B&N's sales forecasts, they wouldn't be selling huge quantities at a discount on eBay...

I would say a good number of Nook Color buyers are buying it with explicit intent of rooting it and using it as a tablet.

And just so you know the 1/2+ year old iPhone 4 that came to Verizon was the best selling launch Verizon's ever had.

Wha? When did this happen? News about its launch were that it was an underwhelming flop, failing to generate a fraction of Big Red wanted.

I'd agree a good number of them are, but I would argue that they're still definitely in the minority. Remember that people on Anandtech are not the average consumer, and the average consumer is exactly what Barnes & Noble is targeting.

Maybe, but it doesn't make it any less of a tablet for me 🙂 Don't really care about average consumer or B&N much.

And God bless those normal people for help subsidizing the words first great cheap tablet. Just like God bless those older folks on my block who have broadband for email that subsidize my massive downloading. Normal people are the only reason us geeks get affordable toys.

It outsold any launch Verizon has ever had. If anyone called the launch a flop, that means every Android launch was a double flop. This was an old'ish phone with a new model coming just a few months after it. And it still outsold brand new top tier phones. Reports of it's poor sells were basically made up by Phandroid people.

Well it was a flop because some people expected huge lines like the AT&T iPhone 4. That did not happen, but it did not mean that the iPhone 4 on VZW wasn't a huge launch relative to the other Android phones.

Edit: double negative fail.

It definitely wasn't a flop. It didn't sell as expected though as there were surveys taken saying 30% of Verizon customers said they were going to get the iPhone. I'm sure we'll see a bigger jump when the 5 comes out since everyone knows a new iPhone comes out the same time every year.

I think the 5 will be the interesting metric here. As usual we expect fat lines on AT&T. Now what about Verizon? I'm curious.

I think most Verizon customers who wanted a smartphone were already under a contract with a Droid/Droid X. Also, Verizon didn't do an early upgrade promotion like they did with the Droid X (and like AT&T did with iPhone 4).

Whatever are your expectations for "Awesome"... Temper them.

The current line up of Android tablets is just fine aside from price point. What people fail to realize is that a tablet is a lightweight computing device, and it's absolutely NOT meant to replace PC computing in any way aside from simple connectivity and entertainment.

With that in mind, I'm happy with my Nook Color. Sure it's not a tablet out of the box, but it doesn't take much to get there. At the price I paid for it ($130 + tax), it is far and away the best option available. Yes, it does have its faults, but it suites my expected purposes just fine.

basically, if iphone was officially on all carriers, it would beat android with its millions of different phones to one apple phone...

And just so you know the 1/2+ year old iPhone 4 that came to Verizon was the best selling launch Verizon's ever had. Mind you it was an old, and outdated phone in many peoples eyes. Compare the iPhone 3 launch to the Droid 1 2 or x and your theory means nothing. When the iPhone 1 came out, smart phones weren't popular yet so it's not a fair comparison. And as your your study it's you purely speculating, I have a Droid 1, but would drop it for an iP4 in a heart beat if I could get one off contract for the price I paid for my Droid 1. Which I got 5 months after it came out, for $150 off contract. It was used, but you'll never see a 5 month old iPhone for anywhere close to $150 used, you'd be lucky to find one for $450 in fact.

LOLWUT? When did eight months equate to 2+ years? 😀

I would suggest rather than a reading issue it's a notation error. 6mo+, for example, is much clearer. I await the OP of the post to call me a retard due to his error in true AT style. :sneaky:

Sometimes logic is greater than notation... we all know the iPhone 4 isn't 2 years old. 😛

1/2 = one half, seems pretty simple. I type just like I talk, and in real life I would say "it's over half a year old" It's personal preference I suppose? Sort of like how this forum's divided between Android/iPhone .

Oh, and you like RIM...
