so how do we feel about the moderators moderating publicly instead of anonymously moderating as Anandtech Moderator?

Anonymous moderation is entertaining. People thought all the problems would go away if they knew which mods were editing/locking their threads, but it hasn't really made a difference.

no more sexy mod 🙁

(which i think was probably dennilfloss anyway *shudder*)

i think it's worked out for the better. contact with mods is much friendlier since you know who they are, and will frequently see them in similar threads.

it's not like they're some anonymous boogeymen out to banstick you.

I don't think that's because they are public, I think it's because Derek stepped in with some guidelines.

Maybe I'm just too new, but it was fun trying to figure out who was who.

Its fine, although a month or so back seeing a mod that should have got a short vacation got let off the hook was kind of shitty. If they were anonymous, I wouldn't have given a shit. All in all, they do a good job considering the idiots and asshats around here, myself included.

*for the record, I like the mod in question, he has cut me slack before. 🙂

I feel like they probably give their moderating decisions more consideration when their username is attached to them. It's better this way IMO.

I don't really care one way or another. It's good knowing who the mods are, but when they are forced to take action, "Anandtech Moderator" serves as well as any...PLUS, it prevents any personal issues out of the threads. "OMG! that mod <insert username> just spanked me because I said "something offensive. He should be banned for saying almost the same thing."

I've had a few warnings from the mods over the years...mostly from ONE moderator in particular. It seems like he's a bit more uptight than the rest...but I don't think trying to call him out over it is needed. (but some folks here might)

I feel like it's worked better. It keeps the mods on their toes and I think it flushes trolls out quicker.

Actually, the trolls stay here longer now. If I was still modding, rolo mather, theflyingpig and GodlessAstronomer would be gone. Though the later got the message and has been getting better.

I liked it better when the mods were anonymous. It allowed them to still participate as ordinary members without attracting a lot of extra harassment in every thread. I think the level of mod-trolling has increased, especially as the trolls have learned under what conditions the mod they troll cannot touch them (like a thread they've already participated in) and some of the mods, quite understandably, have become shorter-tempered and less inclined to put up with good-natured shenanigans as a result. Giving them their anonymity back would allow them some time to still participate on the forums as a regular member, to relax and enjoy the fruit of their labors, as it were.
