This whole having to upgrade your computer first to get your key converted is BS. There should be an online app to enter in your old key and have it converted so we can use the fresh .iso installer.

Reset windows 8.1 -> Install updates -> Upgrade.

It's an in place upgrade, so you don't keep around your old windows files (they go to Windows.old, really) and you keep your programs. Thus far I've seen no reason to worry about a fresh install.

He's actually got a point. If you have any Win7 or Win8/8.1 machine you want to upgrade, you've got to go through the whole darn download just to switch your key over to a valid Win10 key. If you have a valid key that is not in use in an active partition, that means installing and upgrading just to swap keys. If you have multiple machine that need upgrades, that means a download for each one (unless there's some way to push the upgrade to multiple local machines from one download).

If you could just send MS your old Win7/Win8.1 key and get a new Win10 key in exchange, you could then download the iso once and be done. It would save a lot of bandwidth and a lot of headaches.

Different topic:

Has anyone gotten errors downloading/installing the launch day security update for Win10?

Security Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3074683) - Error 0x80004005

Retrying doesn't download anything . . . the harddrive just thrashes some, and I get the same error. I downloaded the WU software cache and it redownloaded the update and . . .same error.

Hey, you can download the ISO and run it on each machine. At least, that's what I did. After that you can decide whether or not you want to Refresh/Reset your PC. I did for 2/3 we have here.

This whole "download everything automatically" is a nightmare, I can't get specific revisions of Nvidia drivers installed, the installer just fails every time.

This is easily the biggest balls up of the OS so far, not every vendor is going to get their drivers right every update, forcing updates for them is a monumentally stupid idea, let power users select whatever drivers they wish.

Having to root through the registry to delete the telemetry tracking was also a bit lame, just let us set "off" in the UI, why force users to submit their personal and private data to microsoft?

Honestly, I'm not that impressed so far. For a touch-based PC, Windows 8.1 > Windows 10. The issue is that Windows 8.1 allowed me to remain in a touch-based UI for the majority of my time, but by hitting Desktop, I could easily go in and fiddle with whatever I needed. However, Windows 10 isn't very clean in this manner as there are two ways to go about it. The first is enabling Tablet mode. This isn't that great, because you can't get back to the desktop without disabling it. The second is enabling full-screen start menu, but when you do that, your modern apps still start up in a window on the desktop rather than in fullscreen. You can hit the maximize button, which will fullscreen the modern app. There may be some sort of setting to tell all modern apps to start up in fullscreen, but frankly, that should be the default whenever I say to use the fullscreen start menu. Also, enabling Tablet Mode on a PC attempted to bring up phone settings. o_O

I also had a few issues with my Gaming HTPC. The first problem is that Microsoft has some basic drivers for the Intel I217-V NIC, but they don't work. Seriously, Microsoft... how many times do you have to be berated for providing useless drivers? It's far easier for me to tell that I need to find drivers if I see that the device won't install properly. The second issue that I ran into is that I couldn't install NVIDIA drivers for quite a while. The problem was that Windows was that it kept complaining that the found hardware wizard was open (it was not visible anywhere to me), and it refused to install. My only guess is that Microsoft pushed the drivers, which I already had downloaded, to me via Windows Update and kept me completely oblivious as to what in the world it was doing. Microsoft, I don't need Windows for Dumb-Dumbs -- I want to know what in the world it's doing! Also, my Gaming HTPC is the only out of four PCs (2 desktops, 2 laptops) that will not activate. Two were upgraded from 7, and two from 8.1.

As for the two aforementioned laptops, I haven't had any issues there... yet.

That works? Okay, that's a time-saver.

Anyone having issues with AMD drivers? Mine keep on crashing mid game when I alt-tab.

I haven't had problems with them since uh, April or May or so? They used to cause problems with preview build upgrades. Actually, it was that video streaming enhancement software that comes with Catalyst that really did it. Now I reflexively leave that stuff out when installing the drivers.

Just an aside, but the 10240 install I have from updating preview builds (all the way back to 9784 or 9874 or whatever it was) still reports as being activated, which is cool.

Yup the OS install in my VM is still activated.

Hold on to those insider preview cd keys!!!!!

Creative Labs have never been great with their drivers and always slow to act, glad I ditched them years ago,the best thing I did.

SB X-Fi Series Support Pack 3.3 (02/14/2015) - Windows 10 support

http://forums.creative.com/showthread.php?t=714135

We will have to wait until oct for their non beta WHQL drivers.

I thought everyone in the Insider Preview with the same edition had the same CD key?

I was under the impression the keys were different.

The day the RTM build was released to the net I downloaded an iso build wrote down my cd key from the tech preview I was using then wiped it. Installed from the ISO and used the preview key and it activated fine and is currently running without issue.

  1. Open the start menu and type "Advanced"
  2. Select the second result, "View Advanced System Settings"
  3. In the "System Properties" window that just opened, select the hardware tab
  4. Click the "Device Installation Settings" button
  5. Select "No, let me choose what to do"
  6. Select the "Never install driver software from Windows Update" (at least for now until nvidia gets their head out of their butt)
  7. Uninstall any nvidia software on your system right now
  8. Reboot
  9. Install the latest driver from www.nvidia.com

Before doing this, be sure you've checked Windows Update for updates AND REBOOT. That usually leaves me with a functional driver.

When you open the start menu, you should see it to the right of the start button (and unless you changed the option, it will always be there. You can right click the task bar and go to the Search menu, it has options like "hidden" and "Show search box.)

Else, if you look in your task manager, is the process "Cortana" running? If not, then there's the problem :)

Already created a bootable USB with Windows X on it. The installation setup automatically made my USB bootable. Thats pretty nice.
