shit. i'm missing where to even search. cause when i open start menu there is nowhere

Just hit the Windows key and start typing.

Also, I don't think that automatic driver installations are the worst thing. There are some cases where I prefer it (e.g. Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter), but others where I definitely don't want it (e.g. Nvidia drivers).

I'm so used to right-clicking the Start button in 8.1 to do anything, that it's taking some getting used to left clicking again. Really though, the Start menu doesn't have a whole lot of purpose...anything it does can be done better elsewhere in the UI.

I personally don't mind it - the ONLY reason I care is because of the nvidia driver on windows update being kinda odd. It looks like it failed to install....and you can't install a new driver...and then you reboot. And it turns out that the WU driver installed just fine. As long as it works in future, I'll be happy to leave auto-driver install on.

Start, search. Best thing ever. It actually finds stuff, like advanced system settings. I mean...Win8.1 NEVER did that for me. Cortana alone is so far one of the brightest highlights of Win10!

Guys check powershell do you find it slow to load and sluggish.

if I open it in win 7 is fast but the win 10 version runs terribly.

Any ideas folks?

Powershell relies on the .net framework and I believe 10 comes with 4.5 preinstalled.

The 512 shortcut limit bug in the start menu is absolute bullcrap. Who codes like that?

First load is always slow for me (first load ever) - runs fine now.

Many users have gotten too complacent and lazy over the years. It now leads us into the problem we're in today. Managing updates responsibly isn't hard and is something the end user should have control over. It's sad to see the once proactive computing world devolve into having to be babysitted by a giant company.

I'll always want to choose what updates to install on my expensive gaming PC. Especially drivers.

One thing I just noticed is that Pin to Start is a sacrifice. In 7, I can have instant access to recent files/sites using that application (Office apps, Websites, etc). It doesn't matter if I pin it or it is just something I use a lot, it's there.

With the new start menu, that is no longer available if I Pin a shortcut. This would be a major loss on my work computer.

Boo MS!

Thanks this looks to be the case.

I had two updates to install and after a reboot powershell runs normal speed now.

Can't get anymore updates since it's stuck on this one:

• Hewlett-Packard - Imaging - Null Print - HP Photosmart 6520 series - Error 0x80246007

I see no way of removing that update or hiding it. lol

Probably intended to limit the number of live updating icons and stuff that can happen, or limit lag digging around to fetch icons, that sort of thing.

A lot of those seemingly arbitrary hard limits are in place to cover up features that don't scale well in terms of performance.

God i HATE this one already. Too many inconsistencies and annoyances to list here.

Just for starters...someone explain the logic that they migrated Windows Update and many other settings to an entirely new "pseudo metro" interface. It took me 30 mins to even find out how to get to Windows update

Defender can not be disabled out of the box..even with Kaspersky running...keeps popping up and telling me bluntly "I am going to take action now"...deleting stuff from my HD without me being able to stop it. Needed a reg tweak to disable it.

This Windows is as necessary as a hump on the back...ugly taskbar...cannot even adjust colors..have to wait until Classic Shell can get rid of all that annoyance.

Oh yeah..funny...after my quest to access Windows Update...I checked (obviously)...and then it said "your device is up-to-date". What device? Did it have to d/l drivers for some hardware? Then it dawned on me...

MS now calls computers "devices"....the same nonsense as with how software all of-a-sudden has become "apps".

I really HATE the direction how this is going and how they force people STILL into the Metro interface like with those new settings. From an ergonomical/intuitive point of view I think this is terrible how this is done.

Search for Windows Update or Update in the search box.

Defender is under "Update & Security" in settings where you can flip real time protection off, just as before.

This bug isn't in the tiles, it's in the All Apps. It completely broke the start menu after I upgraded last night since I have about a thousand games installed on my SSD array.

The mail/calender app, is the most horrid mail app I've ever seen. I used to run essentials 2012, but that doesn't work under win 10.

I got Thunderbird to work as mail client, but the calender part isn't working with outlook.com. So I have to use the mail app as calender and thunderbird for mails.

Also hate all the "app" look seeping through Windows.

Installed last night, and have ab out 6 hours on it so far. Installation was uneventful, and overall I'm really liking it! I'm coming from Win7. I'm going to use the Edge browser by default for a couple of weeks before I decide if it will be my perm default, but so far I'm liking it. Very fast.

DPI scaling is excellent. The only issues with DPI is programs where the manufacturer did account for it. (I'm on a 4k monitor)

All my games run just fine.

Overall speed is snappier. Especially built in search. Blazing fast.

Havent had to install any drivers other than what Windows installed, although after initial installation I had to reboot for the Nvidia driver to kick in.

All in all, I like it!

I'm slowly starting to find things I miss from 8.1. Here's my short list so far...

1) Universal "back" button at the bottom left is annoying in apps. I miss the back button that typically resided at the top left of each individual Metro app in 8.1

2) Screen swipe functions in Edge browser even in tablet mode appear to be missing. Metro IE worked well in that regard as I could swipe the screen to go backward or swipe to go forward to the next page. I'm left with navigation arrows in the toolbar in Edge it seems.

3) The Mail app is missing right-click functions that the 8.1 app had for "Mark All as Read" and other functions of mail folders. I do like that it is closer to the iPhone Outlook app I already use though.

4) My battery life reported on my Surface Pro 3 seems to have gone to shit. I don't think the battery life itself is worse, but what's being reported as battery remaining seems "off" from what I'm used to 8.1 reporting.

Not really going to change my habits regarding entertainment and "being connected", which is covered to a small degree by an iphone and ipad. My verdict.....

inferior and Bland

Thanks for your useless non-contribution to this thread :p

Surely an exaggeration. Start->Settings->Updates and Security?

What did you try during the first 29:47?

This

Flexy is right about Windows Defender. If Windows Defender doesn't acknowledge your AV, it will stay on. If you turn it off, it will turn right back on the next time you reboot. If you click on any notification about it, it will turn right back on. And you can't stop it's service from within a normal login.

Now, somewhere in AT someone found a way to turn it off from safe mode. I don't remember the details ATM.

The tablet changes are going to take some time to get used to. I am still loving/hating some of the changes. The lack of swiping in Edge is a big negative, I can't imagine they won't add that though.

Task switching is sooo much better now, and the old way was pretty good.

I noticed some weirdness with my battery last night on my surface 3. At one point it was showing as plugged in but not charging (when idle!). It eventually started behaving itself.

lmao that is the first thing that came mind.

what were you doing instead of just typing in windows update in the search field?
