So.... good shoot?

Yeah, they changed it to self defense before the trial. This was a slam dunk for the jury. He had a prior history of threatening people with his gun and the parts of the video tape that we did not see showed more damning evidence against him. Drejka was itching to shoot someone.

It would be interesting to see his search history pre-shooting
Did he search stand your ground a lot?
Did he search self defense
Citizens arrest

When I started owning guns back in 2004 I research my State's self defense laws to see what exactly is considered self defense and what is not.

As with most states, it is pretty clear that you have to have a reasonable belief that you are in grave danger of your life and bodily harm. If the attacker flees you are longer permitted to shoot.

I would advise you to call the police and say only as little as necessary and get a lawyer.

He probably did but like whm1974 indicated, that should be something you reasonably do if you are going to carry. You need to understand the law. If Drejka was obsessed with his gun related searches then yeah, that could be a problem. I don’t think the cops searched his computer like they would have if this was initially considered a murder.

I should have been more clear, did he search those terms an unusual amount, did he watch how to get out of being arrested for shooting videos.
Just would be interesting to know nothing more than than.

Like if whm searches a dozen times did this guy search it 1,000 times.

Stand your ground laws aside, maybe even then you can expect to get arrested in most cases of having to use lethal force to protect your yourself from an attacker. Keep in mind the police show up after the fact and they don't know what happen when they do.

I know people like to give me shit but:

In the last 3 years I've had a crapload of seminars and training sessions. I learned a lot about shooting and a lot about the law.
If this guy did perform ample research I dont think he learned much. I think he saw what he wanted to see and used that image in his mind to justify threatening people around town. And it finally caught up with him.

If you have a CC permit only let people who need to know that you have such a permit. Don't let go around bragging that you are doing so.

Just telling someone you are carrying a gun can be interpreted as threatening, showing it can be interpreted as brandishing, actually pulling it out of the holster without sufficient cause is a crime, too.

If you are carrying concealed the gun should stay that way unless you need to use it. It's not a tool to scare or intimidate someone with, but a very last resort to protect your life from a genuine threat you can't otherwise avoid. And it's definitely not a tool to win a fight you provoked.

As he should have been. I hope this tempers Floridian good ol boy conduct moving forward, but knowing Florida, I wouldn't put money on it.

Agreed.

Question - I didn't read the whole thread. Was the wife handicapped? Not trying to justify anything here, just curious.

Oh, jesus, here we go again!
Maybe the facts during the shooting should be quoted by TM supporters. Not their hurt feels or GZ hates or his magnanimous failures or melted bergs or he (WHAT) wasn't white....

Like FL law and the factual 1+ min 911 recording, the factual ballistics of bullet entry...that kind of shit. You know, facts.

But...nvm...facts and physical evidence be damned. Let's revisit Kavanaugh, you bitches.

😀

'sup, Paladin? Hope all's well on your end. You see how I summed up months of BS in one single line? https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/what-is-your-unpopular-opinion.2569110/post-39908107

wtf is the obsession with treyvon martin? 8 people were killed in chicago Aug 3 and 4 of this year. And nobody cares. But if the media tells you that it was a white guy (but wasn't he hispanic? Nah that doesn't sell as well) who killed a black kid, then some of you people just can't shut up about it 7 years later. It's baffling and comical.

Chicago shootings are typically black on black in low income/poverty areas. TM/GZ was mixed race on black in a somewhat middle class gated townhouse community.

Because if they catch the shooters in Chicago they don't go free because of some stand your ground law.

So because it is black on black and they're poor those shootings aren't important? Only middle class / mixed race shootings matter? Because if so we're ignoring probably 75% of firearms homicides.

SYG wasn't used in the Zimmerman / Martin case. Sheesh!

Oh, jesus, here we go again!

Yup!

No, self defense was used but please tell me the huge difference. Either way, I think if you pick a fight you should lose your right to defend with lethal force.
"Self defense" is a valid argument / defense in both Chicago and Florida (and, well, pretty much anywhere). SYG is not.

With SYG, you don't have to retreat if you're able to. Zimmerman couldn't retreat when Martin was fighting him obviously.

We don't know if Zimmerman ever said anything provocative before the fight, though I doubt it. The evidence leans heavily that Martin initiated it.

Yeah all the evidence except that Zimmerman was deliberately following Martin, right?

So the only differences are that SYG isn't available everywhere and the retreat thing Maxima mentioned. How does that invalidate my original point?

...until he wasn't.

...not that it would justify the attack if he still were. Seriously. Is this the level you operate on? Neighborhood Watch can't justifiably watch?

This level of perpetual self-delusion around the incident soliciting others to correct the record wherever they see it misrepresented is exactly why Paladin3 said "here we go again."

Because you were incorrectly trying to draw a distinction between Chicago, IL and Sanford, FL using two different legal defenses, even though the legal defense used applies and presumably would have worked in both places. Duh.

SYG's lack of duty to retreat before defending yourself with lethal force never even factored. The lack of duty to retreat in FL is not some difference in addition to SYG. It literally is SYG.
