Motorcycle? or Bicycle?

Motorcycle.

:) I was going to flame you if you were riding a bicycle :)

those idiots who ride bicycles on the road with cars DO deserve to get hit!!! especially when there IS a sidewalk!!!

Here is my beef with bike riders:

They want to be treated as equals on the road, but they A) go way slower than traffic B) don't get out of the way when they easily could C) don't treat themselves as equals, weaving between slow traffic in the city or running red lights, etc.

If you want to be equal, act equal.

So I guess you hate it when motorcycles share lanes too huh? I don't have any sympathy for bikers running red lights but would you honestly tell me that you would sit behind a car on your bicycle? Do you even ride a bicycle?

I own a bike does that count? No, I'm not saying I would sit behind cars, but if as a biker you are setting your own standard of rules, expect a different standard of treatment as well. I'm not going to share the road with you if you are doing 10-15 and I'm doing 35, I'm going to honk like an asshole until you get the fvck out of my way.

you're mental

Why? I'm not going to go 20mph slower because some asshat on a bike wants to cruise down the middle of the street.

sooo... you did this w/o your blinker? this all really depends on how far "left" you were going.. and what is on the left. As much as you may hate it, there are idiots out there.. and you basically have to assume no one knows wtf is going on. At least.. it sure seems that way most of the time. Not saying the civic wasn't in the wrong either. He shouldn't have been tailgating you anyway.

does not mean the guy was right who hit you. It just means you were setting yourself up, and will continue to do so till you get rid of that terrible habit.
Agreed. Couldn't have said it better myself.

If I were driving, I would have thought the same thing as the guy in the Civic.

You would've been very wrong. Remember, when dealing with bikers you have to be extra careful because one little mistake and you could take somebody's life. And before people start saying "who cares if some biker dies", remember when you get in a fender-bender with two cars you call your insurance company and maybe your premium goes up a little but there's no criminal consequences. If it's a biker you can hurt the person very bad and aside from obvious consequences you can get hit with manslaughter, especially if police determines you were in the wrong (which passing somebody on the right certainly qualifies)

I think I read the entire thread, but missed the part where he said he used his signal.

(Could somebody quote the post with that info?)

I would like to see how fast you could go on a bicycle. What do you want them to do? Get off the street?

Why wouldn't you just pass the cyclist like you would a slow moving car? Laying on your horn will make many cyclists less likely to move towards the right hand side of the lane. Regardless, you assume cyclists are there just hogging up your space. There is usually a very good reason why a cyclist is riding where he is riding. From inside your car, you probably would not notice the trash, ruts, or other obstacles that a cyclist has to navigate.

Anyways, bicycle laws usually stipulate that cyclists over a certain age (e.g., twelve) have to ride in the street or on a bike path. I agree that cyclists should obey traffic laws such as stop signs, stopping for red lights, etc... but simply riding on the street is no reason to get honked at. Chances are there is a very good reason why a cyclist is riding away from the right hand side / shoulder.

It goes both ways..... people on Bikes need to pay attention to what's going on around them, more so than someone in a car. It's your life, you have to watch out for it and not expect the other driver to do it for you. I know how it is,I have been riding motorcycles since the mid 70's, and I have learned to watch my own butt........

Sounds like you gave him too much room. When riding with cars you need to assert yourself and make sure there isn't enough room for said idiots to pass you on the right...especially if you are preparing to make a right hand turn. Did you have your turn signal on?

Yes, I had my signal on. The only thing I can think is that it's kind of hard to see the blinker on my bike (most bikes actually) so he might've missed it.

Yea, the bikers have a GREAT reason to be in the middle of the road where I can't go around them. Wait....no they usually don't, not around here anyway. Just yesterday there were 4 of them going in a pack down the middle of the street. Now, had they all been on the side, it wouldn't have been a problem, but they were just chillin next to each other. I'm sure their desire to chat while they ride is much more important than holding up traffic on a busy city street.

And I'm sure you feel real comfy and confident inside your car don't you? Those 4 guys that have no courtesy for traffic is just as bad as the idiot drivers on the road. But don't clump all cyclists together because I might as well clump people like you as idiot drivers who think they own the road. I go out of my way to stop on every freaking stop sign, but it's frustrating dealing with people like YOU and bikers that couldn't give a sh*t about the world.

This is proof that there are assholes on bikes, but there are more assholes in cars. :D

Neither of you understands the physics of riding a motorcycle. Skyking, you obviously haven't ridden a bike in the 25 years that you've had your endorsement, and you probably don't deserve that CDL. I hope you don't drive a 70,000 pound machine with the ideas that you have of the rules of the road. Have either of you ever heard of outside-inside-outside? It's the proper way to go through a turn on a motorcycle. Especially if the turn is greater than 90 degrees, as the diagram indicates. If I had to do a turn like that on my bike, and did it according to the manner prescribed by you idiots, I'd be leaning way the f&ck over in a turn that probably has a sh!t load of gravel right at the apex. But neither of you understand those subtle intricacies of motorcycle control. Instead, you think it's ok to pass a motorcyclist in his lane because of some f&cked up rationalization.

How long have you been riding? This is straight out of the motorcyclists handbook for my state. (handbook page 9)
You are entitled to full use of a traffic lane. However, incorrect positioning within the lane as you approach a turn can be hazardous. Knowing how to make a safe turn is a vital part of safe riding. Proper lane position will increase visibility, communicate your intentions and protect your lane. As you ride, mentally divide your traffic lane into thirds. As you approach the turn, evaluate which path is safest. When making a RIGHT turn, you should position yourself so traffic cannot fit between you and the curb. In addition, you want to control your lane of traffic so others do not try to squeeze through on the left side as well.
The car should not have done what it did but as a responsible motorcyclist you should not have swerved to the left. You should have slowed down more and taken the turn from the correct position in the lane.

OK you're delusional. We get that part.
Go back and read my posts. No where did I say it was OK for anyone to pass on the right without a proper lane there.
If you don't watch what all the other folks are doing, you're gonna get creamed.
Arguing right and wrong from the seat of a bike is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Cop: " he was definitely in the right. That driver will be getting a ticket, and probably going to jail"
Fireman, washing the blood away: " Yah that will be a big condolence for his family"

If the OP continues to swing way out, neglect keeping exact track of all the potential players, and arguing in his mind about being in the right, it will not end well for him.

Check out Crucial's find in the Motorcycle handbook:

You are entitled to full use of a traffic lane. However, incorrect positioning within the lane as you approach a turn can be hazardous. Knowing how to make a safe turn is a vital part of safe riding. Is that in error too?

Get used to it. The question isn't "Will I wreck?" it's "When will I wreck?"

I've gone down twice. It happens. Get back up and ride again.

Oh, and watch out for arsehole drivers. :)
