who cares if he signalled? Obviously he should, and probably did. But this guy was going to pass him on the right side of a lane regardless? geez

If you see somebody going left, do you assume he's going to turn left? The OP was going left, then all of a sudden turned right, so unless he signaled, the car behind him would assume he's going to turn right, thus keep going. Where as if the OP signaled, the car behind him would've slowed down and let him take the right turn.

Well, if the guy saw him signal, it would INCREASE the chance of NOT getting hit.

if i'm not familiar with the road and some guy in front of me is slowing down and swerving to the left side of the lane, what am I supposed to think?

I certainly would not pass somebody on the right if they signaled, I probably wouldn't do it even if they didn't but maybe that guy was thinking "wtf is this assjack in front of me doin"

moving left to turn right is an absolute asshat move. If you have a 45' trailer behind you, then you need to do it to clear the posts. everybody else, move over in the direction you are going to turn, please.
does not mean the guy was right who hit you. It just means you were setting yourself up, and will continue to do so till you get rid of that terrible habit.

Because if he didn't signal, then what he did gives every indication of preparing for a _left_ turn and not a right turn and can be considered as driving erratically.

If he didn't signal, then at least half of the blame rests upon him.

Sounds like both of you screwed up, frankly.

This may be a hint, however, or a forewarning of what's to come. Chances are that if you keep driving your motorcycle you'll get in an accident.

You have to move left to turn right, otherwise I would've made it into the turn. Are you familiar with the laws of physics by chance?

I think he means if you had to turn left so hard that a car had room to squeeze in on the right, you went too far. If you want to get to the meat of it you could be a foot away from the curb, slow to about .5 mph and take a right without veering to the left at all :)

I've had a motorcycle endorsement since 1979. A CDL since 1988.
moving counter to your turn means you are trying to go too fast. 5MPH slower and all the way to the right will keep you alive much longer.

we don't really know wtf the driver of the car would have done. passing a motorcycle on the right and IN THE SAME lane as the bike is clear evidence that the driver was not fully aware of the situation. If ARGO had stayed in the center part of the lane, or on the right hand side, he would have had to slowed down more, and consequently he might have been rear ended by the car.

Looks like a bad intersection for a motorcycle. I would avoid it using it.

Well, it's not like I was riding on the yellow line, I was probably a foot or so away from it. There were no driveways or any other left turns for another 50 feet, the guy was simply being and ass.

Motorcycle.

:) I was going to flame you if you were riding a bicycle :)

those idiots who ride bicycles on the road with cars DO deserve to get hit!!! especially when there IS a sidewalk!!!

Here is my beef with bike riders:

They want to be treated as equals on the road, but they A) go way slower than traffic B) don't get out of the way when they easily could C) don't treat themselves as equals, weaving between slow traffic in the city or running red lights, etc.

If you want to be equal, act equal.

So I guess you hate it when motorcycles share lanes too huh? I don't have any sympathy for bikers running red lights but would you honestly tell me that you would sit behind a car on your bicycle? Do you even ride a bicycle?

Motorcycles at least travel at the same speed as cars. Bikers travel at 15mph(guess..) and everyone has to go around them.

If you were moving left, and he thought you were turning left, he was perfectly justified to pass you on the right unless you signalled otherwise....IMO.

Swinging the opposite is reserved for stuff that needs it. the guy had successfully followed you without running you over up to that point. why not acknowledge that swinging like that makes for a mixed message? What if you blinker is burnt out? If you match your physical moves with your intention, there is less likelyhood of mistakes.
Ever get behind somebody who goes way right to set up a left turn, then has to wait for traffic? It sucks.

I own a bike does that count? No, I'm not saying I would sit behind cars, but if as a biker you are setting your own standard of rules, expect a different standard of treatment as well. I'm not going to share the road with you if you are doing 10-15 and I'm doing 35, I'm going to honk like an asshole until you get the fvck out of my way.

It's my freaking lane. As a biker I'm allowed to travel anywhere within that lane. Bikes do need slightly more room to execute shart turns. Anybody who doesn't know that needs their license suspended.

I understand where you're getting at but it's not like when a car pulls over to the left side of the lane, completely stops, turns its left blinker on and tries to make a left turn. In that case most people pass on the right. Otherwise, I fail to see mixed message. How many times have you see a car in front of you pull to the left to avoid a pothole. Do you immediately pass them on the right? That's just ridiculous.

you missed mine. went right over your head. say your blinker does not work, you slow and move left. What are they to think? some old lady might run you over. The physical move did not match the intention.
You set yourself up. Does not matter right or wrong when your flesh meets the pavement.
I would never move farther over than the middle of the lane in any case, because it prevents what happened to you.
