For you guys who have never (or rarely) encountered swipe-style ATMs - are you going to drive-through ATMs, or walk-up ones?

Swipe like swiping your credit card at a grocery store? I haven't seen this. I've never been to a bank with a drive through, but I will soon since I got a checking account at US Bank.

The ATMs at Chase have a sort of swipe system. You put in your card and pull it out quickly, like how some of you guys do. ;) So, it's more of a horizontal swipe rather than a vertical swipe (up and down).

I've found a card left in a machine before, asking if I wanted to take out more money. I just took the card into the bank and gave it to the person at the counter. Took me maybe 5 minutes to deal with.

Some of you have never seen swipe ATMs?! o_O

In this one, the card goes in, hits a hard stop, card comes back out, back into your pocket.

I haven't seen pic #1 yet.

I have seen and used pic #2. I think all the big banks in the US have gotten rid of the ATM machines that hold onto your ATM card till you're done with transaction.

Wow Olds calling someone an old fart! This guy must be a Titanic survivor! :D

I was waiting in line to use the ATM when the older couple in front of me finished and walked away. I went up to put my card in and the screen said: "Would You Like Another Transaction".
I hit yes and it took me to the transaction screen.
I called the dude back and he got this look of "what the fuck do you want". I contemplated saying "nothing" and withdrawing money from his account and then realized the cameras are always on.
I told him he left his card and he started arguing with me that he didn't. Luckily his wife wasn't the stupid old fart that he was and she came and got the card. She was appreciative, he needed a punch in the mouth.

As to the OP's question. I'd have thrown the card in the trash. Won't do anyone any good without the PIN and I am not standing in line in the bank because someone forgot their card.

Most ATMs, if you leave the card in for 30-45 seconds without removing it, it will suck it back in and deposit it into a card bin. When I worked in a bank, we would usually find 4-5 every Monday morning when doing ATM matinence. For our banks cards, we would call the customer and give them the option of picking it up or destroying it and reissuing, and for other cards we would just destroy them.

Both. Never seen a swipe ATM of any type, in any state I have visited, or in my home state.

Seen lots of machines that work like that, such as gas pumps, but never an ATM.

The bank I worked at, if a card was brought in or left in the machine, we had to destroy it and issue another. It didn't matter if the owner walked in 10 seconds after we got it.

gotta give it back or turn over to bank. can't mess with that kinda karma

Yeah, I couldn't possibly even handle knowing I did something like that, it'd haunt me for life. I try to be a good citizen, dabble into things I shouldn't at times, but I do look out for fellow friendly citizens. Even slightly ruined a good hooded sweatshirt of mine helping push someone free of their plowed-in parking spot as I was walking to class one winter. And I've had people assist me, though usually it's because I got halfway out of the spot before getting stuck, and thus was blocking traffic - the first person to get blocked tends to get a little unnerved, though at least they appear kind when assisting. :D

Right - could always be a setup like they do in small towns to weed out the dishonest folk. In that case it would be a dummy account and the thief would get the surprise of his life when a panel below the machine opened up. Next a contraption known as the "Denver jock strap" emerges and grapples his crotch like those arcade claw machines. Except this is equipped with electro hydraulics with over a ton of testicle crushing power. Then come the Pinkertons to take him into custody. :D

I just go to the next ATM. Usually at BoA and Wells Fargo if you don't touch the screen for X minutes, the machine swallows your ATM card and it gets held at the bank. I've done this multiple times before I used the Fast Cash option.

And even with the Fast Cash option, it wasn't till about 2007 or so BoA started implementing machines that first return your ATM card before dispensing the cash. I had a bad habit of leaving my ATM card there. Got swallowed 3-4 times by the ATM. I'm surprised given the homelessness that's around Berkeley. Wow!

This happened to me in the drive through once. If I was in high school, that bank account would have been emptied and I would have had a brick of pot....but in my later years, which it was, I cancelled that session, took the card out, tried to catch her, failed so i cut it up or returned it. I don't remember which.

I've gone through the exact same situation before. I was lined up after the lady, and she left the card in there, still logged in; coulda wiped out her account. But alas, I hit "cancel" and ran across the street to give it back to her.

Camera films the door of the bank, and they put the TV opposite the camera for you to see, so if I did steal, they'd have caught me pretty quickly.

There is a camera, in the ATM, pointing at your face.

My cousin forgot his card one time and the person behind him withdrew all his money out. He called the bank, bank gave him the money back, police came and looked at the video, found his license plate, arrested the guy and asked my cousin if he wanted to press charges. My cousin said fuck it, more of a hassle then it could be.

ding ding ding

why you should always withdraw.
-they might not catch you.
- even if caught, no charges might be filed

indulgence of society's understanding...

All of the newer (as in past 10 years) machines that I've used don't pull your card in. I lost/forgot my card in Asia as they used the style that keeps your card until the transaction is over.

I've seen some of the old style in smaller banks that don't have the money for 5 or 10 year hardware and software upgrades. They tend to hold on to things for 30+ years.

Weird, as I've seen the opposite--the swipe-type ATM's I've seen are always older, why new banks and newer machines all keep the card until you're finished.

As for what I would've done--canceled out, and if I didn't see the woman nearby, I would've turned it in to the bank (assuming there was actually a bank there). If it was a stand-alone ATM, I'd make more of an effort to find her, and if I wasn't able to, I'd likely just destroy the card myself.
