So a lady left her bank card in the ATM.

What would you have done?

  • Taken out as much money as you could.

  • Get the card out and try to find the lady to return it.

  • Get the card out but leave it at the bank.

  • Find the lady and exchange card for sexual favours.

It was still in transaction mode, asking me if I wanted to continue, i.e. take out more cash. I of course said no, got the card out of the machine, then ran down about a block to find her and return it. She seemed embarrassed, but was thankful.

What would you have done? :hmm:

canceled out of transaction mode, make a reasonable effort to attempt to track down the owner and send it back to them (eg: phone book, google, give up), and then move on.

seems retarded to withdraw funds when you're being videotaped (possibly along with your license plate)

I'd have milked that sucker for all it's worth.

Unless I had just seen the lady leave the ATM - then I probably would've done what you did.

Since it's the weekend and the bank is usually closed, into the night deposit bin it goes.

I was waiting in line to use the ATM when the older couple in front of me finished and walked away. I went up to put my card in and the screen said: "Would You Like Another Transaction".
I hit yes and it took me to the transaction screen.
I called the dude back and he got this look of "what the fuck do you want". I contemplated saying "nothing" and withdrawing money from his account and then realized the cameras are always on.
I told him he left his card and he started arguing with me that he didn't. Luckily his wife wasn't the stupid old fart that he was and she came and got the card. She was appreciative, he needed a punch in the mouth.

As to the OP's question. I'd have thrown the card in the trash. Won't do anyone any good without the PIN and I am not standing in line in the bank because someone forgot their card.

:D you have to love the people that are assholes to you even as you are trying to help out. I guess that's one of the reasons people don't help out much anymore. :(

Each time I use an ATM, any transaction that involves moving or withdrawing money requires me to enter my PIN again. For example, if I first view my balance, then want to withdraw money, I have the enter my PIN again.

I had opened the door for her to leave as I was entering the bank.

That's a good idea; definitely not like that at my bank.

At a lot of the bank machines I have used in the US they usually give you your cash first, which I think is a terrible idea; they should give you the card first like they do up here, since you are more likely to grab the cash you came there for and walk away if you get it first.

I would do exactly what someone else has done to me in this situation.

I left my card at an ATM (ejected 1/4", didn't see it, forgot about it, left it sticking 1/4" out of the slot). Some guy came buy twenty minutes later, found my card. He immediately flipped it over, called the 800 number on the back, and told the bank. They cancelled my card immediately, called my cell, and issued a new card. I picked up the new card that day, not a single cent lost.

My cousin forgot his card one time and the person behind him withdrew all his money out. He called the bank, bank gave him the money back, police came and looked at the video, found his license plate, arrested the guy and asked my cousin if he wanted to press charges. My cousin said fuck it, more of a hassle then it could be.

I most likely wouldn't be in this situation, because my bank's ATMs don't "eat" the card - it's just a standard swipe.

All of the newer (as in past 10 years) machines that I've used don't pull your card in. I lost/forgot my card in Asia as they used the style that keeps your card until the transaction is over.

I've seen some of the old style in smaller banks that don't have the money for 5 or 10 year hardware and software upgrades. They tend to hold on to things for 30+ years.

I think I've used a swipe-style ATM, like... once, out of too many trips to the ATM to possibly count.

Down on campus, almost all the ATMs dotted High Street and were walk-up.

Other than down there, I've always been to drive-through ATMs - and every ATM I have ever used has been the card-eating type.

Never have forgotten a card in my life. :)

I wonder how many colleges have a High Street near by? Central Michigan has one too....

Add University of Oregon to that list.

The situation in the OP happened to a person I know. He ended up taking $300 out of the schmuck's account. It was at a grocery store ATM, so he stopped going to that store for a while but nothing ever happened to him.

I've never seen a swipe ATM.

The ATM's I use will take the card if you don't remove it, or if you enter the wrong pin a few times.

So, if you just wait, you won't have to deal with the abandoned card, the machine will take it.
