The best part of this debate is how the whinging smokers come out and whingingly accuse the whinging non-smokers of whinging too much.

Go rot your lungs in a park. In fifty years, smoking will be consigned to the history books, and kids will say "Did people REALLY do that?" :p

No sympathy here.

Ah! Now I get it, since busses don't use engines, or make smog...
Utilitarian

Meaning no one needs to get around in such a hurry that they have to use a car when public transportation is good enough. Just throwing your same logic back on you.
I know the meaning of the word. Should we get rid of ambulances, also? They make smog. Nobody needs to get to the hospital that badly, do they?
Uhh... you need to work on your logic before I will continue to debate with you. Big, big fallacy there. Of course some people need to get to the hospital that badly. Or did you not notice that you comparing driving to work to a life-threatening medical emergency?

My point is how the pros and cons line up. Pros of smoking- You enjoy it. Cons of smoking- It may kill you. Pros of using combustion engines- the economy functions. Cons- it pollutes the environment. As I hope you can see, the pros and cons for using engines are far more favorable. Should all smoking be banned? No. Smoke 3 packs a day, I don't care. Just don't do it in a place where you may affect my health. You might say the same about driving, and then we go back to pros and cons again.

I have to ask what is it about your lifestyle that FORCES you to go to bars? Perhaps you need to re-examine your lifestyle.

I don't go to bars. But smoking isn't confined to bars, and I do from time to time get second hand smoke in places that I do go to, and I don't like it. In my lifestyle, I often go outdoors. People often smoke outdoors, and I often have to breathe their second hand smoke.

I agree. Let's ban smoking all together.

You gotta thank the herd that is "mothers of america", a.k.a totally overweight miserable biotches that's lobbying for all these ridiculous bans on every god damn things. Why can't they just choke on the fcuking bon-bons that they inhale every day and die...

Most definately sarcasm. I detest these types of laws.

I am enjoying being in smoke free bars. The morning after bar hopping I would wake up with a smoker's hack and feeling like crap from inhaling smoke for six hours.

It is tough on smokers in the winter....

Oh wait, I wear contact lens, so I should be forced to wear my eyeglasses just to appease the smokers. Fvck that, smoke outside where it belongs, not in an enclosed public environment.

you do realise that in California and parts of Massachusetts there is legislation in place which prohibits smoking outside in public places?...only a matter of time before this happens everywhere...and that person who joked about it being banned in your home might not be too far off...only a matter of time before it is banned in apartment buildings as you put your neighbors at risk with second hand smoke...

what is ironic is that this is done in the name of the workers, the bartenders and the waitresses...however many waitresses and bartenders are greatly upset by this legislation in massachusetts as their wages have gone down considerably as they were on tip income and since more people stay home or go to places which allow smoking they are not making ends meet and must seek other employment...gotta love the double edge sword where proponents of smoking were saying they should find new work whereas anti smokers said this was for their beneift, now that the laws are in place they are forced to seek new work because they cannot get enough tips...

That's EXACTLY what people said about alcohol and drugs when they made those illegal... more than 80 years ago. Amazing how well that worked, eh?

Wake up. You aren't God. You can't force people to live the way you want them to.

Anyone who thinks this is a "smoker's rights" issue should turn in their voter registration card.

Well then, I guess we should ban alcohol and alcohol addicts from bars too while we're at it.

been this way for quite some time in Maine (since the beginning of the year actually) it makes quite a difference.
Noe instead of people inside the bar, all you see is a stack of people hanging on the corner smoking then they go back in to drink some more...

I just saw this thread now, so I'm just replying to the original post now. I live in CT, I dont smoke. I dont agree with the law at all. If you dont like people smoking, go somewhere else. It's just another step towards the government controlling us.

You think that's your bar?
You think that's your band?

And I've worn contacts for 20 years, have smoked, quit, and been (and still go) to a million smoky bars, and never had a problem with the smoke burning my eyes. Go see your eye doctor.

It isn't the SMOKERS bar, now is it?
It isn't your bar either. The owner should be able to decide whether smoking is allowed, not some fscking government agency.

It won't change much. Smoking has been banned for a while here but I still come home reeking of smoke.

i would think that people driving home from the bar would create more risk to smokers and non-smokers than second hand smoke. since i dont go out drinking, im going to lobby for alcohol free bars.

that law is just stupid. you dont want to sit in a smokey bar, dont. go to chilis or tgif or somewhere. its not like its a health club or something. edit: and its a known fact that people smoke in bars, so its not like you shouldnt expect it.

Do you always run to the government like a child when someone does something you don't like?
