Meaning no one needs to get around in such a hurry that they have to use a car when public transportation is good enough. Just throwing your same logic back on you.

I know the meaning of the word. Should we get rid of ambulances, also? They make smog. Nobody needs to get to the hospital that badly, do they?

that law is just stupid. you dont want to sit in a smokey bar, dont. go to chilis or tgif or somewhere. its not like its a health club or something. edit: and its a known fact that people smoke in bars, so its not like you shouldnt expect it.

So if there's a local band that's playing that you really like and want to see, someone that doesn't smoke and doesn't want to be subjected to secondhand smoke can't go and see that band because of that smoke filled environment? I personally was sick and tired of having my contact lenses buring my eyes because of the irritation caused by smoke. Oh wait, I wear contact lens, so I should be forced to wear my eyeglasses just to appease the smokers. Fvck that, smoke outside where it belongs, not in an enclosed public environment.

its called life. if said band is playing at a non-smoking establishment, then i have to decide if its worth it to me to go see them and not smoke. same for you with the smoking. why does your comfort/desires supercede mine? im sure theres more of a chance of you suffering some ear damage than getting cancer from my cigarette anyway. what if the members in the band smoke, as 99% do. then what?

if you dont like it, dont go. simple as that.

This exactly the point of private enterprise and a free society!:|

It should be the business owner's choice to please or not to please his customers, NOT the gov'ts. Patrons aren't forced to go to the bars are they? What part of this is confusing?

So you want to see a certain band. So what, that's your opportunity cost of not going to a certain bar.

I don't like fast food because the food is unhealthy. Therefore, there should be a law outlawing fatty foods as fast food restaurants.

this is a great law

I'm sick of a minority of smokers trying to impose their smelly smoke and awful breath on the majority of non-smokers

sadly, that is typical of judgmental people. "since they dont *insert habit/belief/opinion/etc here* like we do, then they are wrong, and we must crusade to stamp out all things different from us because we dont like them."

My point is how the pros and cons line up. Pros of smoking- You enjoy it. Cons of smoking- It may kill you. Pros of using combustion engines- the economy functions. Cons- it pollutes the environment. As I hope you can see, the pros and cons for using engines are far more favorable. Should all smoking be banned? No. Smoke 3 packs a day, I don't care. Just don't do it in a place where you may affect my health. You might say the same about driving, and then we go back to pros and cons again.

I have to ask what is it about your lifestyle that FORCES you to go to bars? Perhaps you need to re-examine your lifestyle.

Hmm, interesting viewpoints, maybe it should be up to the owners, but, last I checked, this law hasn't really hurt the businesses of any bars or clubs in NYC where this same law is in effect. I saw a WWOR report where quite a few owners were praising the law, and their business has never been better. Seems to them that non-smoking establishments has been good for business. To them, that's the bottom line, not worrying about whether the smokers will patronize the establishment, because they know they will.

They're everywhere here where I live (Portland, OR). The trend started about 12 years or so ago when a small chain of little brewpubs called McMenamins opened up as non-smoking only. They were instantly successful and now they have grown to quite a number of trendy pubs, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, odd over-21-drinking-allowed movie theaters, hotels, and even a winery.

There's a big business out there in this market waiting for private enterprise to capitalize on it. Government intervention is not necessary.

I don't go to bars. But smoking isn't confined to bars, and I do from time to time get second hand smoke in places that I do go to, and I don't like it. In my lifestyle, I often go outdoors. People often smoke outdoors, and I often have to breathe their second hand smoke.

i agree its better for eating establishments. the tables turn quicker=more money so of course they like it. bars are different, because im sure the vast majority smoke, and i dont know anyone that will stay for more than one beer if they cant have a smoke with it.

for the record, i have no problems with not smoking in restaurants.

Contact lenses absorb airborne particles, and are especially susceptible to smoke. The lens floats on top of the eye, and the smoke gets trapped in the space between. Trapped smoke is a strong irritant to the eyes.

Your changing the argument. This isnt smoking outside, this is smoking in bars. So, since you dont go to bars how does this affect you one way or the other? It affects you, a non bar-goer, as much as it does me, a Kansas resident (Who obviously wont be in Conn bars)
Thus, why do you care one way or the other?

Not just outside either, indoors but not at bars. I haven't experienced it much recently, since my life pretty much is 'home-school-home-don't ever go anywhere else' for the past few months.

Well, sure, because everywhere else where it's not mandated by law, bars are lining up to voluntarily ban smoking.

Also, don't they just have to sell tobacco products to get around this law? I think that's how some did in other places.
