Slow driver in fast lane

I hate when people don't understand that the reason fast lane is called that way is that it?s the lane were people like to go fast. I was coming home right now and was doing a good 80 mph or so and a car was in front me doing about 65 speed limit. So I flashed my headlights so she would notice me and move. Guess what she didn't, forcing me not only to slow down to 65 in order to avoid hitting the car as I couldn?t change lane at that second as a car was next to me on the other lane and that car could have change lane with no problem and also forcing me change lanes just so I can get around it.. I am petty sure you know who was driving, if you guess it was a female you are correct. It was a young girl maybe would say 19 or 20 and she didn't understand why I even flashed. Don't the driving school teach people that when you are in a fast lane you better be going the speed the traffic is going in that lane?

I hate this happening, especially on two lane roads...you know the maneuver: driver a is in the right lane with driver b behind him. Driver b decides to head into the left lane to "pass." However, as soon as driver b enters the PASSING LANE, he matches speed with driver a and decides to travel right beside him, thereby blocking ALL TRAFFIC BEHIND THEM.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily have a problem with people driving the posted speed limit on a road; I'm not psycho like that. But if you're in the fast lane and traffic around/behind you is constantly passing and traveling faster than you, then MOVE THE F*&K OVER so as to avoid becoming a moving road hazard.

Speed doesn't cause accidents; differences in speed cause accidents.

I get over to the middle lane for people like you for a reason...

So that the cops get you and I can drive without fear at around 5-10MPH over the limit.

The old addage:

the right lane's for saving gas
the left lane's for hauling ass

has always done well by me.

Seriously, roads are all about bandwidth. I don't care about middle of the day stuff, but drivers who insist on traveling a set speed and accelerating slowly cost me a lot of time on my commute home. On most days I get home in about 20 minutes. On the bad days, when I get stuck behind people who refuse to conserve bandwidth, it can take upwards of 40 minutes. Interestingly, we're not talking about a serious difference in mean speed, so much as latency. Getting stuck @ 15 traffic signals can put a real dent in my otherwise happy go lucky attitude.

f*ck those people abusing the left lane.

This "slug" sets the cruise at 75, thank you. Your desire for it to be a "fast lane" does not, however, change the fact that it is not now, nor has it ever been, a "fast lane".

On a road that has two lanes in the same direction, the right lane is the driving lane and the left lane is only for passing. All vehicles are expected to keep right unless actively passing another vehicle. On roads where there are three lanes in one direction, the centre lane is the driving lane, the right lane is the truck lane, and the left lane is the passing lane yet again. Normal traffic is expected to remain in the centre lane, moving to the left lane only when actively passing another vehicle. The right lane is for semis and other vehicles that are traveling at less than 65 mph.

Just because most of the population has had piss-poor drivers' education does not change the actual rules of the road.

It's also worth noting that even when speeding, you stand less risk of a ticket when you try to stay in the right or centre lanes.

They are required by law to get out of your way if they're in the left lane and you are trying to pass them. If you're speeding, then it's the police's job to pull you over. But other drivers should never take it upon themselves to intentionally hold you up or "teach you a lesson".

If you're speeding and you nail someone, there is no way it's their fault.
The only moron is those who think they are invulnerable when they get behind the wheel.

I wrote a big reply but I deleted it before I posted it because it was too long and personal! Basically I agree with you that such drivers are highly annoying. But this week I learned an important lesson about how letting these things get to you can cause harm to others. I didn't get in an accident, or even get a ticket or get stopped, but I let this one driver get the better of me and in the end I was the loser. If someone won't let you pass and they violate the law, which requires slower vehicles to move to the right no matter whether the person approaching is speeding, it is better to just take the Ghandi route and wait them out through patience.

The fact of the matter is that too many petty people who hate anyone driving faster than them will continue to drive in the left lane. I'm sure the devil has reserved a special place in hell for them.

You're right that if the right lane is open, cars are required by law to use the right lane. (They are required to use the right lane when it's open even if they are speeding, which is something that most people don't think of, though I believe that you acknowledged that.) I was under the impression from the initial post that if the driver going 65 in the left lane had moved over she would have cut off a driver in the right lane.

It would be really cool if police forces had the occasional "piss poor driver day" where they only ticked people who tailgate, don't use their turn signals, fail to make complete stops, drive slow in the left lane, etc. That would really make my day!

You have any idea how many people would get pulled over if they did that? Drivers would be dropping like flies. :)

Yeah I know...

The other day I almost witnessed an accident. The guy was in the middle lane and I guess realized that he wanted to take the exit to the right. Instead of continuing on and turning around when he got the chance, he instead STOPPED in the middle lane on the highway and held up traffic while he waited until he could cut over and take the exit.

No, they are required to operate their vehicle in a safe manner. I do not have any responsibility to enable you to engage in Road Racing on public highways. If you're tailgating me after speeding up on my ass, you'll be the one going around. Because chance s are you won't give someone the time to make a safe lane change. It is not illegal to pass on the right in CA., so pass on it if you're in such a hurry. It is not mandatory to yield for someone exceeding the speed limit who is not properly displaying emergency vehicle warning lights. Blinking your lights as a signal to pass is only a legitimate signal in Germany on the Autobahn. It has NO LEGAL basis in CA. The only "blinking light" signal that is dictated is the one to dim one's headlights.
If you worry about how you drive and not about what someone's intentions may or may not be, you'll be better off, IMO.
I didn't realize you could determine that they were intentionally trying hold you up by the back of someone's car....

What an arrogant comment.....
