No, they are required to operate their vehicle in a safe manner. I do not have any responsibility to enable you to engage in Road Racing on public highways. If you're tailgating me after speeding up on my ass, you'll be the one going around. Because chance s are you won't give someone the time to make a safe lane change. It is not illegal to pass on the right in CA., so pass on it if you're in such a hurry. It is not mandatory to yield for someone exceeding the speed limit who is not properly displaying emergency vehicle warning lights. Blinking your lights as a signal to pass is only a legitimate signal in Germany on the Autobahn. It has NO LEGAL basis in CA. The only "blinking light" signal that is dictated is the one to dim one's headlights.
If you worry about how you drive and not about what someone's intentions may or may not be, you'll be better off, IMO.
I didn't realize you could determine that they were intentionally trying hold you up by the back of someone's car....

What an arrogant comment.....

It?s not hard to tell when the person is doing intentionally or not. Usually after you flash your lights and in my case it was getting dark and my flashing was pretty visible the driver will move when it safe and that is all I am asking. I wouldn?t want her/him to change lanes and cause an accident just so I can pass. However when they are looking in the mirror and continue driving without changing lanes even do they see you behind them, then its pretty easy to say they are doing it intentionally.

It's NOT a "fast lane". It's a PASSING LANE.

So... unless you're booking it and travelling at a speed that coming back into the middle lane would mean immediately passing again... don't linger. It's common courtesy in most areas if not the LAW. I can't stand fscktards that go 4 abreast with a giant line of cars flashing... tailing... etcetc to go around. Let the speeders speed. Heck, I try to stay at ~10 above unless all traffic is going well above that.

Flashing brights is in the books in my area... but 99/100 people have no idea what it means. It's actually a polite request for a pass...

True we can pass legally on the right in ca, but I was on 101n after 405 and no cars were in front of here, there was no reason for her not to be able change lane safely to the right and let me pass.

Can you show me some proof of that?

I live in New Jersey, and here you MUST yield to faster moving vehicles, even if that vehicle is breaking the law. It is not your job to judge whether he is speeding or not, that is the police's job. All you need to worry about is MOVING for the person who is trying to pass you.

Besides, it is against the law to STAY in the left lane. You are not allowed to cruise along in the left lane. It doesn't matter whether someone's trying to pass you or not, and it doesn't matter how fast they are going if they are. You are NOT allowed to stay in the left lane... it's a passing lane only.

Good Try.

Ah. Sorry then.

5 lanes? Wow. Just, wow. I know they have those in some places, but I have never been on a highway with more than three lanes. I love the midwest, it's great. Hardly any of the traffic that you guys in the bigger cities have to endure. :)

WORD.

Assholes in the left lane either need to speed up or change lanes! And don't get mad at me when I start shooting at you with my side-mounted minigun if I catch you going below 80 in that lane.

If you're speeding and you nail someone, there is no way it's their fault.
The only moron is those who think they are invulnerable when they get behind the wheel.
Naw, this was pretty much unrelated to this thread. It was at an intersection with two left turn lanes...people ALWAYS get in the far left lane and then try to merge into the rightmost left turn lane while making the turn. I don't take that bullsh!t, especially when they're doing it to try to "get ahead" of the other people. Anyways, I wasn't speeding or any other way breaking the law, but I was very close to accelerating right into this b!tch....*sigh*, I just braked rather heavily and sat on the horn for a solid few seconds...

Actually, all vehicles are required by law to stay in the right lane regardless of speed unless they are actively overtaking another vehicle. So even if they don't have to move over because of the speeder, they are still required to move into the right lane for other reasons.

I drive like a maniac, but even I know that someone doing 65mph in the PASSING lane is fine. It is up to me to get around them because they are going the speed of traffic, while I'm driving like a maniac. Still, the only law I break is the speed limit.

Ever notice people who drive aggressively on the roads won't honk people? It's because they are supposed to be the ones in control of their movement on the highway. Anticipation comes a long way, and you better have it if you drive aggressively. Other people following the rules don't have anything to do with you. Move on at your own risk and don't bother those who are going about their day.

it IS a fast lane, just that slugs like you are always occupying them!
This "slug" sets the cruise at 75, thank you. Your desire for it to be a "fast lane" does not, however, change the fact that it is not now, nor has it ever been, a "fast lane".

On a road that has two lanes in the same direction, the right lane is the driving lane and the left lane is only for passing. All vehicles are expected to keep right unless actively passing another vehicle. On roads where there are three lanes in one direction, the centre lane is the driving lane, the right lane is the truck lane, and the left lane is the passing lane yet again. Normal traffic is expected to remain in the centre lane, moving to the left lane only when actively passing another vehicle. The right lane is for semis and other vehicles that are traveling at less than 65 mph.

Just because most of the population has had piss-poor drivers' education does not change the actual rules of the road.

It's also worth noting that even when speeding, you stand less risk of a ticket when you try to stay in the right or centre lanes.

ZV

damn, is it me or does anyone else get annoyed by zens, mr. KnowItAll attitude? if you're doing 75mph in a fast lane here in LA, you'll be tailgated by a cop and anyone else that's behind you.

piss poor drivers ed? if you wanna be mr. goody-two-shows, then go right ahead and slow your ass down to 65mph.

you have to think big, most people don't live in suburbia. nothing wrong with suburbia, it's just that the majority of people live in large cities where we have more than three lanes to a freeway.

You may think they are fine, but according to the law (which is the only thing that matters) they are breaking the law.

Unenforced laws are still laws. Laws that are not widely known are still laws. Laws that are commonly misconstrued are still laws.

What did he say that was wrong? He agreed with you in saying that you're not allowed to cruise in the left lane.

I'm trying to understand... what law are you referring to? In the passing lane, you're still restricted to a 55/65mph limit.

My point is, everybody breaks the law... you'd have to go 15mph+ past the speed of "traffic" to get pulled over by "the law" in most places...

Damn.. people just need to understand that some cars have the potential to be going a lot faster than others..

For example, I'm I'm going 100mph and the road is nearly empty, and I'm in a Camaro, I am driving much safer than say a Ford Explorer going 80mph in the same circumstance.. In a Camaro going 100, I can break faster and turn sharper than an Explorer going 80mph.

Get the fvck out of my way if you see a Red Camaro Z28 behind you and you're going slow!

Ok, but if you recall the scenario, there's a car in the middle lane where the driver in the passing lane wouldn't be able to move over safely in front of that car anyway... all depends on speed and the cars' attitudes at the time. At highway speeds, lane changes and speed adjustments should be gradual... the driver is unlikely going to speed up just for him, no matter her experience. Sounds like a science, but it's about feel. He should've slowed down when he saw the girl clogging the passing lane and waited for an opening.

The only time I'd get restless is if the 2 cars were travelling at the same speed side by side for an extended amount of time.

I guess you can see where I'm coming from... I'm breaking the law as it is... I'm not going to fuss over her breaking the PASSING LANE law. Why are you any better ?
