This thread is bringing up bad memories. All i have to say is that whoever could get out of the ghetto has. And from the outside looking in you may be like "why dont they just get a job" or "hard work and perserverance...". Yeah in theory it looks easy. My mom always told me that I would have to work 2 or three times as hard to be as sucessful as others. I didn't believe her but as I am entering adulthood I realize that the statement is entirely true.

bobos are cheap shoes. i.e. not nike, timberland, new balance, reebok.

i could only afford (discontinued)pumas and payless shoes

To let you know where I'm coming from, I'm Korean and my parents came to America so my sister and I could have a chance where they thought opportunity was everywhere. They didn't speak a lick of English and literally had $500 in their pockets. The taught themselves English and worked crazy hours. They ssaved up money and opened up their own business. My parents each worked nearly 70 hours per week. They sold their store and bought one in Detroit. Growing up, I worked at my parents store when I wasn't in school. It took me a while to realize that my parents would get made fun of everyday because they spoke poor English. I would see these clothes that people would bring in, and my parents explained to me that a certain pair of pants cost $40 or a sweater cost $60. I didn't believe them until I got older and realized that it was true. My parents said that Black people were so poor because they didn't know how to save, only spend. When I was young and naive, I told them that that was racist and not to think that way. As I grew up, I started to see what they were talking about. These people lived in the poorest neighborhoods, but spent so much money dry-cleaning their clothes to look nice. They would bring in Karl Kani or Fubu jeans and have them cleaned. If you don't know some of these brand names are really expensive. These people lived in the poorest areas, but dressed their kids in NBA jerseys. I worked in a beauty supply store and realize how much money Black women spend on their hair. Actually, I had no clue that most Black women had fake hair, until I worked there :Q There was one time of the month that was always busy. I was told that that was the time when welfare checks came. The first thing women would do is come in and blow all their money fake hair.

My thinking is that if my parents could have become successful, why can't the average black person? When my parents came to America they had less than any Black living in the ghetto. When I hear about "lack of opportunity", I call BS.

thats what i want them to do. separate the students that can do the worrk and at least OFFER them something higher or more accelerated. there are many talented inner-city kids that are not given the chance to excel becuse of so many damning factors.

thats what AP courses are for.

first you have the lack of challenge for talented students and then you have affirmative action which basically says no matter what you do in high school you will get into a college.

don't forget that parents will also get upset if you try to take more talented kids out of classes.

add that to the other 90% of kids wanting to beat the sh!t out of you because of jealousy and social problems. and thats not just in the innercity but in all classes of blacks but like i said thats a whole other issue.

yes, thats a cultural issue. the "uncle tom" factor, and how it is uncool/acting white to work hard at school and speak correctly. The over emphasis on sports and sports heros, corrupt hip hop culture etc. They are pretty damning factors.

some people make it out of these but they are at a disadvantage (trust me i found out the hard way).

very few of us are born with a silver spoon in our mouths.

So shinerburke, what are you going to do if this thread turns ugly? Are you going to claim it was a friend of yours that logged on to ATOT without you knowing, like you did last time you shot your mouth off and made a fool of yourself.

huh?

couple of interesting comments regrading koreans so far in this thread.

first off, it is true that Koreans and Viet / Camb are poorest of the asian groups in the US. but lets make no mistake, it isn't because of an inherent laziness or lack of talent etc. it's because they are the last of the asian groups to start immigrating to the US. the Koreans didn't immigrate to the US in any great numbers untill Late 60's early 70's. think about that for a second. in less than 40 Years Koreans have become a significant and Important part of the US economy. We've been here since 1970 and in that time i've watched Many koreans come to US w/ $500 cash in their pockets and become reasonably successful economically AND send their kids to college. It is only a matter of time. very soon, Koreans won't be seen as the poorest of asians because enough of them will have succeeded. Now let's get something straight, This is not an overnight thing. Success does not come easy to these koreans, in their Grocery stores, in their Dry Cleaners, in their Vegetable stands, whatever. They work long hours and save money until it becomes possible. it takes many of them in excess of 20 years to become reasonably financially stable. BUT THEY DO IT.

I'm sorry, there really is no excuse for blacks. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. It only shows your true colors. Just admit it. You haven't taken advantage of the opportunities afforded you.

Do ASIANS face prejudice from Whites, Blacks and Hispanics? YES YES YES of course they do. Do they use it as an excuse to stay poor and miserable? NO NO NO.

What about living in an apartment? You can move into a non-ghetto-school-district and not have to buy a house.

yeah sure. ive said at least two times that there was hardly enough money to pay the rent and utilities. I consider it a miracle that my mom took care of me and my siblings in this neighborhood and kept us off the streets. and i of course know that we dont have to live in a house. but when the house was purchased i had two parents and now i have one. someone making $5 above min. wage simply CANNOT live in the suburbs. (i just know someone is gonna be anal and pick that apart)the average apartment costs like $600 a month where i am at. in the burbs its like $1000. $10 x 40 hrs = $400/wk, $1600/mo. take tax out and u have about $1200 after taxes and insurance. add a little car payment in there and bam thats all the money. it would have been close to impossible in my situation to have lived in the suburbs. its not just some excuse.

What's wrong w/ that? My little sister had my hand-me-downs. That's how my parents saved money.

I got cracked on enough because i was smarter than everyone else. I wouldn't add to the trauma of my childhood. It hurts when u have 20 people yell "bobos!!!, bobos!!" I got my black ass up and bought some air force ones with my hustle.
My mother wasnt like other parents that thinks its cute to buy little tims and iversons and dress them up similar to them. I didnt even have any name-brand clothing until my junior year of hs. And i had a job then. in a black neighborhood to not floss and not be "down" with everyone else is a tramatic experience for most.

How many generations have your family lived in the U.S. before it took you to figure that out. I know it sounds harsh, but blacks have been in America for a looooong time. I'm not saying your parents didn't care, but all I see are excuses.

1. blacks have been here for a long time but we havent been granted the same oppotunities. and keep in mind the word is "parent". my mother gave all she could so we could get what we had. if my parents had stayed together i would have been in such a screwed up situation but hey, things happen. and keep in mind this is a family that actually cares.

i hate to tell you but you can live in suburbs with makeing $5 over min wage. granted it does take not buying the latest and greatest. but it can be done.

i disagree on that blacks havent been granted the same opppotunities. what other race gets advantages in school or job acceptance? ( not all jobs use qoutas but enough) i agree whitht he guy that said they just make excuses. well there has to be an end to it and for people to finally do somehting about it. such as actually TRY at school. If you are a good student dont be ashamed and make it ok for them to do well. Stop having rappers or sports athletes as roll models. things need to change and i dont think giving blacks money for something that they did not have anything to do with will help.

In reference to the educational problems mentioned: I go to one of the infamous "suburban schools." It is a shithole. 4 AP classes per year for 1300 students. Teaching is far from excellent. The problem with education in the US is more in the allocation of the funds than their existance. We get new computers each year so that kids can have access to MS Word in the library and leave the res at 640X480. I wish I lived in a city so that I could attend a decent academic magnet. Education in cities is not so awful - there are bad schools but there are also great ones.

maybe we should spend less on computers eh? do you really benifit all that much from having access to word? no, not really, you can write beautifully on paper just fine and practice your pensmanship while your at it. does your computer really help you learn calculus? eh, not really. does it teach you to do real research? eh not really, it gives you easy access to search engines, but thats about it.

Instead of spending time asking for free lunches, maybe, one should have spent it toward an education and better themselves economically and socially through it. Everyone comes to this country and makes himself successful even the black Africans (check the college of engineering at your school and see how high the ratio of Africans/African Americans is.) Only African americans are behind everyone else. That makes you wonder why.
As long as Nike shoes, gold teeth, gold watches, "ho's", pimpy cars, basketball, sporty outfits,....are all one is after dont expect to compete with the rest of the american society. To get ahead in America you better darn know how to work hard and willing to spend part of your life getting an education.
Bitching and whining for free lunches, while others have to work for theirs, has to be the lowest form of depravation.

Where did that come from? I started this thread but haven't been paying much attention to it. As for that other incident I think if you talk to the people on here that know me and know how I normally post they will tell you that the post you are talking about was WAY out of my character. I gave an explanation as to what happened and apologized for it. Give it a rest, hell I had forgotten about it until you brought it up.

Hmm, I'm a white man married to a black woman. Does that mean I pay reparations to myself? What about my son? Does he get reparations or does he pay reparations?

Oh, btw...this whole reparations thing is nothing but a bunch of lawyer who sat around and thought of a new way to try and get money for themselves or whatever organization they support. Example, Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition organization. They want the repartions money to be paid to the organization so that it can use the money to help Jesse Jackson...errr, I mean the community.

It's ironic that their "Millions for Reparations" rally only got a few thousand people to go, and the rest of the US is secretly snickering at those who went.

heh yea, bastards like jordan sell their shoes for 150+ bux to kids.

Everyday, I work with a couple black men, whom I respect and admire. Both are vehemently against the reparations movement. Both of them know they are working, producing an income for their families, and growing in their fields. They see themselves as being no different than us whites. We treat them no differently. I can say, I love both of them and consider them great friends. They never play the race card. Why can't all of us be like that? The problem lies in the conditioning, and in that 6" of matter called our brains. Let's quit conditioning people to believe all the crap, and let's all work together. I believe this country, as a whole does offer an equal opportunity. Let's quit forcing the focus and let's start producing more of what makes it so great to live here.

Then those white O.G. wannabe suburban kids better change their tune........quick.😀

CompuWiz1, although I agree with most your post, the sentence on equal opportunity is just wrong. For some black people, it might be equal, however for most its not. But you know what, I'm not saying that reparations is the answer. Its not. But just ignoring the situation and saying everything is already equal is just living a lie. I'm not saying you are at fault, but there are many people who are. And for those who say their Irish, German, Scandinavian, or whatever ancestors had to struggle to gain equality, I say good for them, but that isn't important. Don't you think this tradition of having to fight to gain equality is a little outdated? Blacks, Asians, Native Americans, and many other nationalities have been struggling long enough. How bout we give them a break. Welfare? No. Affirmitive Action? No. Reparations? Nope. What needs to be done is to educate people about what life for these people is really about. Gangsta Rap in the early 90's told have the story of black people living in the ghettos. The other part is the people who live and fight to get out everday. Once people know what really goes on, I think most things will work themselves out, becuase noone likes to see people getting kicked around for a stupid reason such as race.

I can hardly believe Asians need a 'break' - in terms of median income, they're the most successful ethnic group in the US, ahead of even Caucasians. There's no secret to it - they've placed great importance in hard work and education, and as a result, they do very well very quickly. They also haven't wasted time and effort whining to the government about every little thing - thankfully, there are no Asian versions of the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/Louis Farrakhan crowd. Economic upward mobility is readily available to anyone in America who desires it, and is willing to work for it, not wait for the government to send it in the mail.

Piano Man, maybe what this country needs is more of every ethnic group teaching and inter--culturing together, if there is such a thing. I guess, here where I live, I personally have no problem with that. We go out socially, and I actually have some strong allies, and my black friends excell in areas, when I might be weak in knowlege, but also keep in mind, I could and stand ready to do that same thing for them, at any time, if needed. My Asian friends would be no different. I am in an interracial marriage, so I really have no agenda toward that. 🙂

Also, I would like to call your attention to the fact that, when most of you write something, I have about zero knowlege as to what race you are. I prefer to read the post. Most posts do not have a Chiness, Filipino, Black, European or American sound to them. (Not my intent to leave anyone out). I just do not see a race in their literature.

So when is Egypt going to pay the Jews for their enslavement by Pharaoh before Moses led them out of there?

Is this still an issue or is it just an excuse for Racist to rail on blacks because a handful of insignificant members of the Black community have a hair-brained idea? I think a bigger issue here in ATOT is the inability for most of the Pimple Farmers to get dates (thus them starting threads about how evil women are)
