OP, did you get AppleCare+ on it? I think it was $99 at time of purchase and covers 2 screen replacements at $49 a piece.

According to this (http://store.apple.com/us/product/S4575LL/A) you can get it after the fact. Unfortunately there is no way to know if they will replace it for free out of the kindness of their hearts or not until you take it in at which point you will find out that it is $199 to replace the screen without AppleCare+.

Applecare is a good idea. Apple has fantastic customer support regardless of AppleCare, so if you have it I'm sure they'll take care of you. I've heard reports of new iphone 4 owners that had the same cracked screen after a drop, and Apple replaced it in store saying "well that shouldn't have happened that easily". If you bring it in to an Apple Store OP you might be surprised they'll work with you without much fuss. Especially if you bring it in with the bumper.

you guys didn't mention that the big problem with the particular design of iPhone 4 is that it's edge-to-edge glass. This is terrible for shatter resistance.

i was at the gym and this lady had her iphone in its official case like you. and another full case to cover that. a case within a case! i shook my head in disgust.

im sorry your precious phone shattered like that. i really do. i thought the official case from apple would make the phone impervious to drops. why else would anyone buy such an ugly case???
i remember phones were made to last. anyone who has a Nextel phone from Moto remember? yeah, i threw it up 20ft in the air and it landed fine with minor scratches. some of them were military grade too. hard to believe how phones evolved so much yet fail so miserably with a drop.
 
Sucks that it broke like that, even with it being so fragile if dropped I'm still going to get one. While it's possible I drop and break it like OP's, I've never dropped any of my cell phone. I'm not going to not buy the sexiest phone out there because there's a slight possibility it could happen.

I remember a few drunken moments where I threw my blackberry curve across the room or at the ground, and the worst that happened was the wheel ball popped out and there was a minor not intrusive crack on the screen. The phone sucked, but it was tough.

Even my HTC incredible is pretty sturdy. I don't use a case or anything and after at least a handful of drops it still looks brand new, case, screen, back cover. I'm sure I would have broken many IPhones

YES, THIS SHIT AGAIN. I've seen way too many fanboys screaming how Apple quality is unbeatable and how they dropped their iphone with barely a scratch.
 
my daughter dropped her phone off the top bleacher last week, about 20 ft. she has a "feature phone" tho, not a smart phone. i was amazed the touch screen didnt break or crack, and the sucker still works. i also dropped mine face down on my kitchen tiles, i cringed and expected the worst, but not even a scratch.

Yeah the iPhone is built better than most android phones. It doesn't feel like a cheesecake made of plastic.

Now said that: They are not durable.

Build quality != durability

Your realize this is a portable device that will see a lot of abuse, is typically expected to endure more than your average laptop.

You have to define "built better," because as far as iPhone vs Samsung, it seems that you guys care less about real usage and more about "stranger on train thinks my device is sexy! maybe I can use it to pick up women?"

And to think that the plastic Samsung is now using on their phones is somehow, cheap...well, you have to be extremely gullible. The engineering and thought that goes into those materials is quite impressive.

Build quality is how the phones feels when you pick it up. Motorola is the worst, then HTC, and first place goes to Samsung.

Android fan boys will be fanboys and hate anything Apple.

If anyone even considers apple "build quality" to be important when they are so fragile, there is a problem. What good is this so called build quality when it doesn't mean anything? It has no value?

I love the plastic back on my HTC incredible. Crazy light and durable as hell. Feels nice in hand too. Never once have I wished it was metal or glass.

iPhones feel more solid and nothing creeks and it has no removable back. It's built far better than any Android phone. It's not as durable okay, but I've never dropped a phone so that's not criteria I care about when phone shopping. My HTC's a plastic pile of sh*t that had gaps between the battery cover and phone the day I bought it. Samsung phones are a lot better built, but not up to Apple's quality. If you care about a phone that won't break when you drop it, get the Galaxy II.

And who are these people who abuse their cell phones? I guess durability would be important to people who abuse them, I'm just confused at how people are so reckless with a phone. It's in my pocket, it rings I take it out, when I'm done I put it back in my pocket. I don't think unless I go out of my way to try, I could even do anything abusive to my phone
And even then I don't think it wouldn't be easy to do any noticeable damage to it.

The back is removable. Just two screws on the bottom and back slides off.

..but people seem to ignore the fact that build quality, when it comes to devices that will be meant for very specific purposes, is very much tied to use--for a cell phone, durability is high up there.

One may convince themselves that look is all important, but that is buying into mysticism. The iPod was built very well--well, it wouldn't shatter, and earlier versions did have the HDD IIRC, so you would get some serious issues if you dropped the thing enough. But for a device with nearly the same expected use and abuse, the iPod far outclasses the iPhone.

Why are people so quick to ignore that? Most are going to bury that thing in a case, anyway, so you aren't really going to feel the "oo shiny glass and metal!"

You're going to feel a plastic or rubber case because, god forbid you drop it!

And a lot of people take their phones out and display them for varieties of reason. Go to a bar on any Sunday afternoon and observe the line of people with their phones out and on top of the bar as they feverishly check their fantasy team updates every 2 minutes or so.

People actually do some work on their phones, as well--some tasks done on the go, completing sales orders or whatever and your hands may be tied.

Accidents happen

If a had a phone that felt high quality, but then it shattered after a drop of 2 feet, I'd call it shitty quality.
 
#1 reason why I will never own a iPhone. I hate covering my devices up. I have probably dropped my Incredible on concrete at least 5 times. Besides a couple light scratches, the thing is in great condition.

I too hate cases and crap. Just adds bulk plus the texture of the case makes it difficult to easily slide into my pocket

A fragile vase can be high quality, you're right. But can you think of any item that is heavily used, like a cell phone, that can be called high quality while having such low durability relative to other similar competitors?

I'm not really sure how you are defending a phone made of glass. Who wants to be so cautious with their phone? That still doesn't ensure it will keep safe. With how often people use their phone, no matter how careful, there will be accidents. But like someone else already mentioned, most people just put a case on their phone anyway, eliminating any imaginary benefits of this "build quality"

I don't use a case. I have apple care in case I drop it.
