I must be lucky as I've dropped it once onto pavement and once from 10 ft onto some rocks. My iPhone didn't break and this was WITHOUT a case. Knock on wood.

If you're still within the 1yr warranty, the Apple store will fix either the front or back once for free, I believe.

I had the commuter on my phone before I switched to Android. It wasn't too bad. Good protection without being too bulky. Still noticeably bigger than nothing though. But it kept my phone looking new.

Sorry.. Dont want to sound like a jerk, but I never understand how someone drops, breaks or loses their phone. Irresponsible people, I say. Taking a lot of things for granted.

I come from Ukraine, where as a kid, I would divide a Milky Way chocolate bar into 10 parts and eat one part per day so this wonderful, and very expensive American goodness would last me for 10 days.

My Droid 2 Global.. an extremely expensive delicate device, I cherish it, and treat it with uttmost care. I never whip it out on a rainy day. And if I do, I cover it with my jacket or try to stand under something. Isnt it obvious that water can get inside and damage the phone? I slap and touch my belt holster many times per day just to make sure the phone is there, that it hasnt fallen out or something like that. When I get up or when I sit down. I check, check, check, and check again.

I NEVER dropped or lost a cell phone, and I intend to keep it this way. It pains me to see people who have a $400+ device with a cracked screen, or people that lose these devices. Maybe if we put a little more VALUE into these things, we would be a little more careful with them. Then again, there are those, for whom $400 is like $4 for me. So in this case I can see how these things get dropped...

just my 2c

And before someone tries to say that this is a troll post, let me say that this is NOT. I am 100% serious and I stand behind every word.

Look, it's a phone. It's supposed to be convenient. Sometimes people drop things. It would be an incredible hassle to be extremely careful everytime you touch your phone. Not to mention complete accidents with it falling out of your pocket or something. It's just not reasonable

How does a smartphone fall out of your pocket? Unless you're doing handstands on a concrete road or something. :p

Accidents do happen, but I can tell you that I am much more careful with my expensive smartphone than I ever was with my cheap dumb phone.

Accidents happen. You can be the most careful person in the world but things just happen. I use no cover and my current phone has been dropped 3 times. All 3 times, the phone simply fell out of my shallow pants pocket on its own while exiting the car. The third drop height was from like 5 ft and it finally cracked the screen in two places. It's just single crack lines away from the center. I just use as is. I don't baby my devices since I do not resell my gadgets and computers.

If your shorts or pants have really shallow pockets and you're sitting down, it's easy for larger phones to just slide out of the pocket on its own. Happened 3 times to me with the same shorts. I finally threw away the shorts after the third time. :D

Why not just put the phone in your cup holder as I do and keep the shorts? :p

I always resell my gadgets, so that's another reason why I'm more careful with them. Though oddly, I can't stand phone cases, so I never get them.

Check up on SwitchEasy cases (specifically the capsule rebel). IMO the best iphone cases. If they made Android ones I'd ditch my otterbox in a heartbeat for one. The switcheasy cases just fit better than the otterboxes. Plus they aren't nearly as bulky but still have the 2 piece rubber+plastic shell protection.

I like the Switcheasy Trim in black, but it's been on backorder forever. I may try that Capsule Rebel.

The best part about SwitchEasy cases is they come with a custom dock adapter too. So if you use a clock or speaker system with your phone and it uses the swappable universal docks, the case comes with one so all your accessories still work with the case on.

They also include a nice goody bag with two screen protectors, squeegee, microfiber wipe, and little protectors for the dock and microphone.

Hahaha, i am from Slovakia and in many ways i am like you...thank god i never was in a situation, when i had eat one chocolate for 2 weeks. But i tend to be very protective about my stuff, as it does not come by easily...and i cant stand having something dirty, scratched or not working for some reason. But i have to admit, i dropped my phones occasionaly, it might happen maybe 5 times over last 10 years, but it happened. I remember once standing on the top stair of the stairway and putting the phone inside the pocket on the chest and i MISSED the pocket somehow and dropped it right down the stairways...surprisingly the phone survived with no obvious damage, it was Panasonic GD75, hell of a machine, very sturdy obviously...

Yeah, and i do check if i have my phone, wallet or keys with me as well, so i would not lose it.... i do not think though, this is down to valueing these things more than others, i am pretty sure, its just natural desire for order...i have to check everything twice, i need to have everything in order to feel safe and comfy...i feel stressed when the things are not according to plan or worse, when there is no plan at all :) and i can tell you iPhone looking like in the OP is definitely NOT according to plan, if this happened to me, i would probably cry a river :D

Really? Like...really? Accidents can't happen? Do you think people intentionally drop their phone? Its not like he was juggling it. Its not like he's not concerned that he broke it.

Irrelevant, but thanks for the info.

The Droid 2 actually isn't that delicate. Also, you said you "never" whip it out on a rainy day...but then sometimes you do? Which one is it? What if the OP was trying to cover it too, and in doing so, it slipped? Is he still irresponsible?

Congrats, I'm proud of you. However, some day, if you do have an accident and drop something and break it, I hope you come back and apologize to everyone here.

Troll post? Nah. Arrogant, insulting, something that should have probably been kept to yourself? Uh, yea.

Don't come preaching your crap to me, we buy high end devices and we can afford to replace these out of contract otherwise i would be using a flip phone. Is cool if you are careful with your phone but you may have some issues if you are treating your phone like a "precious thing" these will get replaced in 9-12 months anyways.

But you sure came off sounding like one.

but I never understand how someone drops, breaks or loses their phone. Irresponsible people, I say. Taking a lot of things for granted.

I am EXTREMELY responsible and careful with my phone (and other items I intend to hold on to), but, every so often gravity gets the best of us.

Even professional athletes drop things.

Doesn't the 4 use Gorilla glass?

No, but it uses another type of durable glass. Even Gorilla Glass will scratch and shatter though. A co-worker dropped his Droid 2 on pavement and it shattered in pretty much the same way as this iPhone did. I managed to scratch my Droid 1 pretty good when I dropped it on a piece of plywood.

What you seem to be saying in your post is that decadent Americans aren't careful with their phones, while people from former Soviet countries have had things much worse and thus never accidently drop their phones. I can't believe that no one in the Ukraine ever drops a phone... My wife grew up in a poor family in eastern Poland and went through the whole of martial law and Solidarność and the rest of it, and she remains a pretty frugal person (which is good, because she married a pretty frugal guy), but even so she has dropped and broken far more phones than I ever have.

I have never broken any of my smartphones - but there's been an element of luck to that statement. One time I got out of the car, reached for it and it slipped out of my hands, flew up in the air, and I launched myself across the parking lot and caught it (scratched up my arm a bit on the asphalt but wounds heal and smartphones do not.) One time I was running through an airport and it flew out of my jacket pocket landed on a tile floor and slid >10m and there wasn't a scratch or mark on it. So I have never broken a phone, but it's not like I'm perfect at it. Meanwhile my Polish-born wife who grew up not too far from the border with Belarus throws them in her purse and seems to break about one a every two years doing various things...

I can believe that you personally are super careful with your phone - I am with mine as well - but accidents happen. And I am not very impressed with people who make snide comments about someone else's misfortune.
