It was a joke. This why no one watches that show. If you are that thinned skinned you cannot laugh at yourself, then the problem is not the joke, it’s you. Additionally, this is the state of affairs today. We are way to serious that we cannot take one second to self reflect and chuckle at ourselves. How sad that is.

Yeah, I was binging "The Good Place" with the wife and was done so I tuned in to the oscars and caught it just in time. The wife thought it was staged but I saw Will laugh, then look at his wife and I knew it was real. We know who wears the pants in that family. Oh, am I allowed to say that???

First off, it was a joke. One thing comedians relentlessly joke about at the oscars are the celebrities appearances (dress/hair/whatever). It's a constant. Second, I had no idea about her condition. Maybe Chris didn't either? And unless you completely misunderstand GI Jane, it isn't exactly a "shot". Rock isn't really that kind of comic either.

Will has issues. To not be able to control that impulse in that situation during a live-ish broadcast to that size of audience is pretty blatant. He's entirely in the wrong here.

I don't condone violence but Rock is lucky he isn't missing a few teeth or nursing a broken jaw. Smith used some restraint when I'm pretty sure he wanted to KO Rock with his fist.

If you can't handle comedy, don't go to a comedy act. I and my wife have been picked on by comedians before. If I ever thought they crossed the line, worse case I'd leave. I'm sure Will could've easily talked to Chris after the show. Punching someone over what was clearly a joke is ridiculous.

Any put down of Rock's joke would have been better done by her, not her husband. Chivalry gets people killed. The implication is, she is not strong enough to take care of her own business.

Watched the whole show last night with the gf, and we had our ballots in front of us. I got 17 right she got 11. But Will Smith is outta control. They guy is starting to lose grasp with reality. I did have him picked to win for King Richard though. It was a great performance, whether you liked the movie or not.

I've watched some parts of the Oscars here and there over the past 10 years, but the gf likes to watch them, both to enjoy and critique them, so we had fun watching the whole show together calling out the dumb shit and good shit. Some parts were cringey, some parts were good, some were funny, some were stupid, some were inspiring. Loved the CODA love.

Like I said, he might not have known. Same jokes have been told anytime a prominent female shaves their head for whatever reason (Sinead, Sigourney, Spears, etc).

And not to downplay her condition, but it's strictly a cosmetic issue. I'm sure that one of the most powerful/rich persons in Hollywood can adjust.

Smith's wife's shaved head would have been 100% fair game if she just shaved it as a fashion-statement.

Seriously would it be fine to make fun of her for a "missing boob" after breast-cancer surgery for example? (after all its just a "cosmetic issue" too women don't "need" breasts)

Not sure that is appropriate. During my wife’s chemo, she lost her hair. I thought she looked amazing. I would have rolled with it. If I did not respect her, might have done what he did since there a great deal of disrespectful history between those two. Also, she kind of pushed him to do that after he initially chuckled. Always remember in times like that, it is a reflection of both of them and not him.

Many suffer from various forms of alopecia for different reasons. A joke should never solicit violence. The better person here was Chris Rock. He handled it extremely well. He is also not pressing charges, which I probably would have. Even if you disagree with the joke, his handling afterward has been much better than the perpetrator of the violence who was a slobbering fool that did not even apologize to the one he hit. The "life-threatening" condition wasn't my point it was the effect the treatment for it would have on a woman's self-esteem/confidence and that making light of the subject isn't okay.

As I said Smith should have kept his cool BUT I completely understand why he didn't. (per Chris Rock so does he)

I'm assuming you're male (a good bet around here) so claiming to really understand how Jada Smith felt about the effects of her medical condition on her appearance being made fun of on stage is way off base.
