So, I got my dog when she was two years old and was an outside dog prior to coming to my apartment. I trained her to go outside so, so no problems there besides a couple of mishaps when I didn't walk her in time. A light spank and scold would be in order if I caught her peeing right in front of me.

I just moved out of my apartment into a friend's house and this morning (at 6 which is earlier than when i usually walk her), i took a shower before heading off. When i came out of the bathroom, there was a huge puddle in front of the bathroom. I spanked her and scolded her as i carried her down stairs. I then let her go outside to the front lawn, leashless (she usually comes back), and she wouldn't come back. I think it was because I had just spanked her and yelled at her before I let her out. Anyways, I called her to come back into the house, and she did when i gave her a treat. But as soon as I went to close the door, she ran back out. Frustrated, after her running back and forth to the house (I was already beginning to be late due to the fiasco), I just ran and grabbed her and spanked her back to the stone-age.

Then I proceeded to put her in her room with her bed and left. Ugh, I hate my temper when I'm all groggy and crap.

edit: i let her out again because she needed to go number 2, which she did, and i gave her a treat when she came back in.

Old thread revived by spammer.

Most pet owners are guilty of this from time to time. I know I am.

As long as you didn't hurt her, don't sweat it. She'll be fine.

You should be fixed you beast! I spank my dog harder when he goes outside, does nothing then comes in and pees. Dogs tend to live in the here and now and will quickly forgive you if you show them love later. Thats why we like dogs!

Damn, it was heartbreaking the way she would look back at me afterwards, like the way a girlfriend would look at you after you make them go with you to Fry's. Heartbreaking.

Idk about you, but child eating would deserve a spanking with a 2x4 with a fat nail in it. Or quite simply and cleanly, a bullet.

Yeah well, I'm not a big fan of kids.

I kid... I was just expecting something a lot more severe than running outside. But I only have cats, so the most I ever do when my cats annoy me is flick them with my finger or spray them with water.

Meh, I smack the dog everytime it starts trying to tear up my socks or starts getting into a biting fit.

The dog still bugs my gf and her parents (it's her parents dog, a 3 month old boston terrier), but it doesn't do shit anymore to me :D

Big deal.

It's an outside pet, and it just wanted to be outside instead of cooped up inside. Dogs belong outside anyway.

Exactly. Too many people treat dogs as like they were human. Confuses the fuck out of the dog as well.

Yeah, hence why I take her out often. But man was I fucking pissed when she constantly ran back and forth between being outside and in the house.

Sometimes dogs are the sweetest things, and other times they just piss the hell out of you. The boston terrier i referred to earlier destroyed my 500GB HDD a week ago by dragging it to the floor :|

How long did your dog have to hold it prior it having to go in the apt? Why not take her out before you take your shower?

Why spank her after she's already gone in the apt? She's not going to know why you spanked her and why she didn't want to go back to you or the apt.

If you catch her in the act, yell 'NO' and then take her out. Scolding/spanking accomplishes nothing but make you feel better.

And to those that think that dogs should be outside, dogs are pack animals and want to be where the leader is, which should be you and inside.

Because it's 2 hours earlier than a normally take her out and she is usually fine (I take her out before bed). Sooo i assumed she would be okay.

I usually would yell at her but I'm pretty cranky in the morning, especially if I JUST woke up.
It probably accomplishes nothing, but man did I feel better afterwords. Nothing like letting out your fury on animals.

hehe, true. we have a 12 month old mutt that will sometimes get up on counter tops and eat stuff he's not supposed to eat... when i find him clawing up there, a strong NO! and a good leg-sweep so that he crashes down to the floor... so satisfying. i mean, not that you just hurt the dog, because injuring an animal is barbaric... but dominating and teaching them to not do the things you don't want them to do is very satisfying.

careful, it almost sounds like you're espousing animal abuse as stress-management.

Domesticated or not, they're still pack animals. They respond very much to submissive/dominant behavior from their owners. Training them requires conditioning and conditioning requires consistance. Wishy washy punishment will not teach your dog to behave, and will just lead more misbehavior, which leads to more punishment and on and on and on.

You're not doing your dog any favors if you don't train it. It's just the natural order of things.

About three years ago, I came home and as I walked into the house some big dog I had never seen before jumps up and bites me on the arm. I instinctively kicked it in the chest. I thought I was being attacked by some crazy wild animal. As it turns out, my sister had just gotten a new dog and it was freaking out. It was a rescue dog which was previously abused which explains why it freaked out.

I was wearing steel-toed boots when I kicked it and I broke a few of its ribs. I hurt it pretty bad actually. It turned out to be the sweetest dog I've ever met and never even looked mean since. But it still shakes in fear when I'm around. :(

what the hell does this have to do with dogs being kept outside?

In regards to training, it doesn't take the kicking, leg sweeps and the like many are bringing up above. Many trainers hardly have to contact the animal.

I'm gonna have to disagree. It sounds like he feels bad about it -- but what would you do if you opened the door to your house and a big dog attacked you? Ask it politely to stop?

What's the issue, all I see is somebody walking into their house and they got attacked by a large animal that they've never seen before. They defended themselves, problem? It's not like he went down to the pound and started kicked all the animals there.
