trying to bang a 5 year old! Well at least it wasn't in a public restroom. This story gets 5 out of 5 on the "YECH!" factor.

Federal Prosecutor Arrested In Child Sex Sting

DETROIT -- A U.S. Justice Department official has been arrested on suspicion of traveling to Detroit over the weekend to have sex with a minor.

John David R. Atchison, 53, an assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Detroit Monday afternoon.

An undercover officer posed as a mother offering her child to Atchison for sex, according to police.

Prosecutors said Atchison flew from Pensacola, Fla., to Detroit on Sunday intending to have sex with the 5-year-old girl.

He was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

He is charged with enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity.

According to authorities, Atchison made contact with a detective working undercover for the Macomb County Sheriff's department's.

The detective, acting as the child's mother, allegedly arranged a sexual encounter between Atchison and her 5-year-old daughter, police said.

In deposition, detectives said Atchison suggested the mother tell her daughter that "you found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents."

The undercover detective expressed concern about physical injury to the 5-year-old girl as a result of the sexual activity. Detectives said Atchison responded, " I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only like it soft and nice."

The undercover detective asked how Atchison can be certain of no injury. He responded, "Just gotta go slow and very easy. I've done it plenty," according to detectives.

Atchison, a member of the Florida bar association since 1984, lives in Gulf Breeze, Fla., near Pensacola.

He is president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, a youth athletics organization.
He described himself online as a family man. His wife is a science teacher at Gulf Breeze High School.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Department and the FBI were a part of the investigation.

Atchison remains in federal custody and a detention hearing will be held on Tuesday.

I see it as an example of a really sick person. Glad he is caught before he can hurt more people. I am betting he is Republican but I don't see it as a political scandal.

There must be some caution on innocent before proven guilty, but if even half of this is true, get him out of government and into a jail cell. Sadly, pedophiles just don't
respond to therapy. And are somewhat expert at fooling people into thinking they are normal.

I'm sure in prison they'll be reassuring him with...

I think they'll be gentle and loving... definately no rough stuff.

The difference between the right-wing response and the not-right-wing response above are so typical.

Shivetya calls simply for murdering the bad guy, while Lemon Law shows some rationality in considering the issues and calling for justice and the protection of the legitimate victims.

I view pedophilia as a tragic condition, with the pedophiles themselves victims - but ones requiring society to protect itself from, strongly. No one here would like to have their brain wired in a way in which young children are seen as 'sexually attractive adults'; it'd be like living in a society where heterosexuality is treated as a horrible crime among the most evil possible.

This is why I'm in favor of more government help for pedophiles, where by help, I mean helping them to understand the harm their desires have on children (many seem not to understand it), and creating appropriate options for them to live away from hurting any children, rather than the current lack of such options which tends to lead only to demonization and secret harmful behavior until caught.

He is looking at years in solitary confinement. The general population would kill him.

This when I think there should be an electric chair ready to go in the courtroom at the end of the trial, nothing could be painful enough for him. But your right especially because who he is I hope he gets gang ass raped and then hangs himself. Sicko

Actually Lemon Law started off with "LOL I BET HE'S A REPUBLICAN" which yes is very rational and whatnot.

All sick fucks are Republicans. Ivan the Terrible. Stalin. Hitler. Pol Pot. All Republicans. I heard Hitler listened to Rush Limbaugh actually on the kos, but I have yet to have moveon.org substantiate that for me.

Some sick old man wanting to have sex with a 5 year old is not a partisan issue is it?

Wow. This guy is obviously a sick puppy. I can't help but be a little surprised that a federal prosecutor of all people would ignore the obvious risk that this was a sting operation, but then again it sounds as though he has done this before without negative consequences.

you know, i've heard republicans saying all arabs and muslims should be killed just to make sure, i wonder if these republicans will ask all republicans to be killed "Just in case" they need to protect the children.

I have to wonder about people calling other people "sick fukks" and then demanding immediate execution.

Its hardly an inspired guess on Republican given he is an assistant US attorney under a Republican President. But when it comes to adulterous heterosexual sex or even homosexual sex, its somewhat understandable, but pedophilia is in a category all its own. The OP has it right, sick F*** of the day, week, month, and maybe even year.

I hope no one tries to make political mileage out of this because it unjustly smears people who almost certainly had no idea this person was so perverted.

I think your attitude, one that is easy to hold, is why these folk, with what I can only believe is a mental illness, practice their malicious arts in deep and difficult to discover secrecy instead of seeking mental help for their disease.

I don't know for sure, but I know that one generation of sex abuse of children seem to create the next and the way we deal with it now changes nothing.

Just to be clear, an Assistant US Attorney is hired, not appointed, and typically they will work continuously regardless of who is in charge. There is nothing to necessarily suggest that this guy is a republican just by virtue of the fact that he's an Assistant US Attorney during the Bush administration.

EDIT: It's interesting that he appears to be wearing a bulletproof vest in his mugshot - that is unusual and normally reserved for suspects who are felt to be particularly vulnerable to being attacked (a la Timothy McVeigh).

I believe this quote can be attributed to Moonbeam----I don't know for sure, but I know that one generation of sex abuse of children seem to create the next and the way we deal with it now changes nothing.

The questioned begged is if there is anything effective? In any society, some people are just a fraction defective. And job one is to catch them and job two is to keep them off the streets. The notion of punishment may satisfy our need for blood, but it won't change the damage already done. As a friend of mine used to say, when we don't understand why the person committed the crime, we should be thankful, because if we understood why, we might be doing it ourselves.

I can understand robbing a bank, I can understand the motives for murder, the motivations for a BJ, but thankfully I am clueless on pedophilia. And sadly, of all the crimes in the penal code, pedophilia seems to have no effective therapy or rehabilitation.

Exactly.

I believe Florida came up with something new to handle Pedos because they let a guy out and then he killed a child.

Should just skip that and kill them upon being caught.

Bring back public hangings.

The point is that punishment will not change anything no matter how painful. It just becomes a measure of our sickness to demand his torture. Just bite the bullet and let a natural death behind bars cure the sickness.

Be a lot cheaper than the repairs they will need to do to his ass every week in prison.
