my accomplishments?!? I was once one of the top warcraft III ROC players, but since then have dropped a fairly good amount and am no longer ranked on ladder. I also regularly cream people in the local arcade. Besides that, not much. Oh, I got my bioMechanics research project published in a major scientific journal. yeah, thats about it.

How long did it take for theology? I have seriously considered going back to school for that (after I get my MS in Civil Engineering)...

Noobie, you're in med school right? What was your MCAT score and what med school are you in? Any advice you wanna give an eager pre-med freshman =)

Nope, I'm a premed sophmore who's currently studying for the MCATs, but I can give you the advice I was told by my co-workers at the hospital.

Get a job at a hospital as an ER technician or the like, or volunteer at one. It looks really good on the med school application, and it will help you to make sure you really want to do medicine. Make sure you keep the GPA as high as you can, and get in good with your professors (especially the science professors) as you'll need good recommendations. Also, make sure you begin studying for the MCATs at least a year before taking them (should be at the end of you junior year).

You can PM Mallow or Blastomyces for more info. Mallow's in med school (I believe), and Blastomyces is an 1st-year surgical intern.

EDIT: Presentation

You're a pre-med? Hmmm I figured you were a med student or resident physician from your comments about having 2 years experience in the field.

Yes, volunteering or working at a hospital will be invaluable experience. It will provide you with some insight into the profession of medicine. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there is anything that you can do to totally prepare you for what lies ahead. It's hard to understand what residency is like until you go through it. Many years of hard work and sacrifice. Little time for family and friends. Sometimes not even time for yourself. You'll have to deal with physical/mental exhaustion and emotional isolation.

As for preparing for med school:

  1. 1. Get the best grades possible. grades matter a lot.
    2. Prepare for the MCAT and do well on it. crush it! sign up for a prep class if you have to. do lots of practice questions in a timed setting to pace yourself.
    3. Get to know some of your professors and talk to them in advance regarding letters of recommendation. it'll be easier for them to write glowing letters if they know you well
    4. Volunteer work to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the profession. opportunity for reference letter as well.
    5. Apply early and apply broadly. be humble and honest with yourself. if you are not the strongest applicant, consider carefully which programs to apply. even if you are a stellar applicant, there are also many many stellar applicants out there as well. consider the following breakdown of your applications: 1/3 to pipe dreams, 1/3 to good solid programs, 1/3 "backup" although there really is no such thing as a backup in this competitive environment. the application fees may be expensive but it will be small in the grand scheme of things.
    6. Apply early.
    7. Did i say "apply early"? well, APPLY EARLY!!
    8. If you don't succeed the first time and still want a medical career, try again. If your credentials are not competitive, consider DO programs or carribean schools. Sure, DO and carribean students will be at a severe disadvantage when applying for residency, particulary competitive specialties. But you can improve your chances if you do extremely well in medical school. otherwise, you can still apply for training in primary care.

Two years as an ER Technician, recently "promoted" to NA in the ICU. Funny how, once again, your assumptions about me were wrong. This seems to be a trend...

funny how you relish that "Dr" in your name and how you like to spew off medical advice and terminologies. ER techs and NAs provide a very valuable service, but let's not get carried away.
