Classy the boy had become uncooperative and combative. The police took him down with a stun gun, because it was far safer for them to do so. I do not know why a second shot was fired and I do not know if that is what killed him.

I believe that a police officer's right to protect himself in among the most important right they have.

Like it has been said, if that many officers can't subdue this kid, they need to become rent-a-cops at the local shopping mall or something.

What exactly is combative anyway? In all of the news articles I've read about it, they don't state anything outright, just that he was combative. Hmmm..lemme see here:

com?bat?ive /k?m'bæt?v, 'k?mb?t?v, 'k?m-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kuhm-bat-iv, kom-buh-tiv, kuhm-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

ready or inclined to fight; pugnacious:

AND

com·bat·ive (km-btv) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "combative" [P]
adj.

Eager or disposed to fight; belligerent.

By definition, he never technically physically did anything to the cops, and was more than likely demonstrating defense rather than offense and of course the media is going to side with the piggies here, it's not smart to make your police force look bad.

There is no doubt that they could have subdued him, but what happens if this kid is HIV positive and manages to prick an officer with a dirty drug needle during the process. Would it have been worth it- not if you were one the officer that got pricked.

Anything short of total compliance is subject to the police escalating their force to the next level. They are out to protect themselves at all stops and encounters with the public and I agree with this stance.

Now we got trigger-happy pigs with even more toys to deploy. More weapons removes their need to use good judgement. Don't think, just shoot and clean up the mess later.

17 years ago, blood transferring diseases were not as rampant as they are today. In addition, guns, knifes and general violence wasn't as prevalent as it is today.

Everyone else has evolved - why begrudge the police this as well.

You may be right about diseases, but not about violence and weapons. The only difference is that now they have this new toy, and having something means you've got to use it.

My problems with this case are the following: He wasn't combative to begin with, he only got that way after the cops approached him. He was pretty obviously mentally disturbed and that's why he wasn't responding to commands. They tased a 130 pound boy twice, you can't tell me he was capable of putting up much of a fight after the first use.

I don't think it was a criminal use of force or that the cops intended to hurt him, I just think that Tasers have become way too easy of an option. They aren't harmless, and there are enough cases of them killing people that cops should treat them as potentially lethal weapons instead of something that can be used in any situation.

they didn't "tase him to the point it killed him." they tased him twice, which as far as i know, onl-y lasts for a few seconds. someone correct me if i'm wrong. he died the next day.

unless we got the autopsy report, we don't know he actually died from being tased. it could be a number of things.

It doesn't sound like the kid posed a threat to them, he just didn't shut up when asked to. I guess physical contact with him wouldn't be ok, but shocking him with thousands of volts of electricity is? Why not just grab him?

I can hold a semi civilized conversation, which is more than I can say for you. I know your Type D personality dictates your passive aggressive behavior, and I know it must suck to have to internalize all that angst you accumulate throughout your daily grind, but at least make an effort. You can disagree with someone without having to resort to tired insults.

Because 135-pound 17 year old boys are the nation's largest threat to police. I'm impressed they didn't have to call in S.W.A.T. to take his Bible-thumping ass down.

this is why the news sucks, its not what happened its how its reported, where was this kid walking? was he causing a disturbance and it just escalated into resisting arrest? they play it as "innocent teen with bible is killed by mean cops and nobody can do anything about it".

its always some horrific crime and nobody around is doing anything about it for some reason, they breed frustration and should be shut down.

i dont even bother watching the news anymore, its not news, its their version of events i should become outraged over. CNN is the real criminals here.

This is probably the truest post in this thread. At the end of the day, everyone is arguing over half truths and incomplete evidence. Aside from what trickles into ATOT, I don't read the news at all. There's more truth to be found in a Harry Potter book.

Your personality gets in the way of sound logic and reasoning. Case in point, you had a number of people earlier pointing out a serious flaw in a statement you made, and you absolutely refused to even consider that it might be true. You marry your ideas and refuse to consider any other possibilities, as if opening your mind - even just a bit - might cause your universe to crumble around you. This is a recurring theme in virtually all of your posts. Another good example would be any one of your "I hate my job" threads. You simply do not listen or attempt to comprehend anything that conflicts with any preconceived notions you may have. You're a broken record. You are as inflexible as anyone else on this board when it comes to looking at an issue from someone else's perspective.

Were you there jack@ss. Quote from the article

Police tried to calm the teen, but Holyfield became combative, according to the statement. Officers fired the stun gun at him after he ignored their warnings, then fired again when he continued struggling, police said.

Several points. One there was more than one officer there. Two there is no mention that they tried to restrain him. And guess what, they are paid to do a job that may cause them at times to get into a physical altercation. They are trained for this. When he became combative they take him down and handcuff him. Now he's no threat to anyone. And if your afraid he'll mess up a squad car, you call the wagon. To use a taser without trying to restrain him is neglience and they should be tried for manslaughter. Next you'll be telling me its ok for a police officer to beat the crap out of a 5 year because he dropped a piece of bubble gum paper. No mention of any weapon at all in this case and they used a taser, no justication for that all, none. And by the way, my uncle has been a sergeant at the state pen for 25 years. I have a good friend who I still keep in contact with, is a state trooper. And two guys who I grew with but don't see much at all anymore, one became a sergeant for the state boys and the other became a detective. So I know lil about what they should be doing. So now you can stfu.

Were you there jack@ss. Quote from the article

Police tried to calm the teen, but Holyfield became combative, according to the statement. Officers fired the stun gun at him after he ignored their warnings, then fired again when he continued struggling, police said.

you said they needed to take him down. thats what they did. he was combative and ignoring the police. if a police officer tells you to do something, you do it, or suffer the consequences. i don't know their procedure and don't pretend to but i think they are justified with what they did.

and then there's the classic ATOT move of taking things way out of context and proportion - beating the crap out of a 5 year for dropping bubble gum paper.
