I am going to this little place close by that I have had a few people going on about, one told me the gyro was the best thing ever. I have never tried lamb meat, that claim it is amazing. I am leaning towards the hamburger, nothing beats a good burger for me but I my try the gyro.

It's worth trying. Like anything else there are good and bad gyros, so hope for a good one.

IDK if it's the same thing but like 3 months ago I had some Greek food for the first time ever and we had this....zakkii sauce or some shit on some meat. Looked like ranch.

I called my mom up and was like: DAMNIT MAMMA WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THIS EXISTED.

IMO, gyro is in the category with burgers and pizza, where you can have good ones and mediocre ones, but you have to go way out of your way to find a legitimately BAD one, so it's usually a safe bet.

I get em at the local Greek Diner, so got me.

I get the Souvlaki there now and again also.

Their Greek Salad is massive and great also, sometimes on the weekends if we're cooking we'll just order a one take out for the two of us to go with other things.

It usually lasts a few days and a couple dinners as a salad, on the side. Even the dressing they make for it from scratch is great.

Tzatziki (sometimes spelled tzadziki) sauce. Basically yogurt with some cucumber in it. Sometimes some other flavors. (Lemon and garlic I've noticed. Lots of places have their own recipe.)

The meat is slow cooked with all sorts of crazy herbs and spices and shit. Good stuff.

The tzatziki sauce (and the slow-cooked on a rotating spit tenderness of the lamb) makes a Gyro, imho. Don't be shy. Ask for extra sauce -- on the side if you're unsure. You can thank me later. ;)

What kills a lot of them for me is the tomato and onions. Both have to be fairly thin IMO, or possibly even diced, and several places around here have really thick cut tomatoes and too much onion.

well i do not know in usa but in greece if you go to order a gyro you say what you want to be inside

so if you do not like onions take them out
also some parts instead of tzatziki they use plain yogurt
and usually its onion with perejill in greece not plain onion

now i want 2-3 of them grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
okey going out for 5 min see yaaaaaaaaaaa

this

also understand that you are eating something distinctively greek-american.

Not really. Gryo is a greek name for a dish that is made throughout the Mediterranean that is an extremely popular European fast food that is kind of popular in America.

^^^ lol

This is what you see at all the street meat carts in Manhattan. My go-to is lamb over rice. You must get both red AND white sauce!!! Otherwise it doesn't count. God knows exactly what it is, but after 8 hours of boozing you shouldn't really give a shit.

Side note: It's equally as delicious even sober. This has been tested numerous times.

The best Gyro I've ever had was in a little hole in the wall place in downtown Lisbon, Portugal. It was right across the street from our hotel, we must have had lunch there 3-4 days in a row. It was delicious.

If they have loukoumades(sp?) order it! Loukoumades is essentially a cross between doughnut holes and fried dough.

it sounds like luke-o-mad-ez
