There are limitations on some of the free ones. If you need a vpn then pay for one.

But do the free ones work?

Mostly. I'm using one right now. Sometimes they're slow and sometimes they're difficult to connect to, but yes, they work. It just depends on what your expectations are. Why do you think you need one?

He'd tell you, but he's not on a VPN.

Nothing in life is really free. There's always a catch. I prefer to pay $8-10 month and not worry if my free VPN is really doing what I want it to do.

If you're doing this for security you are better off renting a VPS or server and hosting it yourself. I would have trouble trusting a VPN service as there's no way of knowing if it's some kind of honey pot by the government or megacorps that will simply sell all your info.

Though even if you do host your own and you're the only user then it kinda defeats the purpose too... The only decent thing now days is mesh networking. Darknets, Tor, that kind of stuff. Idealy, a combination of things.

I've been wanting to look into Hyperboria and maybe even starting a node myself, just have not really had the time to play with it. It's basically a whole new internet on top of existing internet, but with plans to eventually physically branch off.

Is there any reason to not just tunnel your data through an SSH tunnel to a server you control?

I run a low traffic site on a $5 VPS with a 100Mbit connection. I figure it can spare a little bandwidth for me to run my traffic through it.

I have been using it for over a year and I highly recommend it. I have had zero problems with it and I have my Unraid server connecting to it everytime it starts.

Also, up to 5 devices can use the same account...so, its awesome.

I'm not terribly pleased with their performance personally. Admittedly I'm a bit pickier than most about my connection speed. Actually, based on their forums, I'm really picky about my connection speed.

But, it certainly works. It's cheap, easy to setup, they don't keep logs, and they don't restrict what kind of traffic you do. Just be aware that many of their IP's are on block lists for games.

I also have been using them for just over eight months and they are great, no complaints.. A buddy and I split the cost since you can use with multiple devices..
