Dude have you talked with people outside of the internet? I haven't met 1 person today who was like oh they can't believe what is happening and this is crazy.

I'm happy no one was killed here. That being said, I think we're seeing a trend of escalating politically motivated violence. It's just the beginning of it. Political extremism is on the rise in the US, on both sides of the spectrum. And partisan rancor might well be at an all time high. These are not good times we're living in.

Is that the one who said Democrats aren't even people? Or was that Uday?

I saw that tweet in full. He was speaking of people carrying around hatred and violence. You think his words were meant for you?

My understanding is that the majority of us believe ourselves to be better than any Trump. Now we should prove it.

That's the trick with tribalism. Each new low is a challenge to reach further than your opponent.

They bring a knife you bring a gun. They bring a gun you bring a grenade. They bring a grenade you bring a nuke. Etc, etc... in the human mind it's not meant to stop escalating. As long as its your new "low" it's perceived as a victory.

I have personally held the belief that people are just not equipped to deal with the constant bombardment of social media and 24/7 news cycle. This guy in a sense is a victim.

Absolutely. Our primitive brains do not cope well with the stress of "others". That they even exist to challenge our world view draws up mental barriers that will act to dehumanize and justify violence against one another. Mankind was not ready for the 21st century and how much the world has shrunk. When a Muslim tweets from Iraq... do we see common humanity or the "other"? Is our instinct to make this world a better, safer place?

Tribalism is our instinct... and modern communications is driving it to crazy town.

So the shooter's dead now? Wonderful, now we're never gonna find out what the hell happened here. :/ And politicians being politicians, they gonna find some way of making political hay out of this.

Also, @FIVR? That's fucked up. Just so you know.

It's like prison rape, everyone knows it's happening and it's wrong and illegal, but because of the characters involved, it just isn't a high priority item.

That's not entirely true, the part about never going to find out what happened. It will just take longer for the investigation to be conclusive. Now the detectives will have to sift through his phone calls, his texts, his emails, mails, go through everything in his house, his computer. It is so much easier to leave a trail these days with technological advancement.

We're seeing media reports that the guy was a Bernie supporter and Trump hater, and we're told that he asked if it was D's or R's out on the field before opening fire. At this point, it's circumstantial but I think the inference that this was politically motivated is reasonable, unless or until we hear otherwise.

The sad part is that I'm not surprised. I wouldn't have been surprised if this was a Trump supporter opening fire on dems either. We're living in times where something like this just isn't unexpected.

A wish for speedy recovery to all the victims.

FIVR is a Russian. His schitck is to poke a finger in whatever he thinks will create division. He doesn't give a flip about right/left or any particular party/policy.

We can ignore the FIVRs and random commentators on Twitter and the Internets. What we cannot ignore, is who in a position of power/influence chooses to politicize this event and score points. I'm sure there that the usual suspects (Brady Campaign et al) will talk about gun control legislation, while we've already seen Trump Jr. and InfoWars blame the media (ridiculous.)

I gotta say, I hope Reps. Duncan, Warner and King aren't trying to sow more division when they say "only Republicans were targeted" and blame "the Left".

Miraculous that the only death was the shooter. Reminds me of some gang violence in New Orleans East a month ago. Two guys with AK-style rifles ambush this other guy at a gas station who draws a pistol. Among the three of them they fired about 90 rounds. They didn't hit a damn thing except the building.

Idiots.

Apparently a cop who was shot in the leg took him down before he could do more damage. Pretty impressive.

Good man. Didn't know he took one in the leg though.

He should get the goddamned presidential medal of freedom.

Although he's a cop and that medal's just for civvies. What would a cop get? Medal of Honor's just for military isn't it?

EDIT: Maybe they are civilians. Wikipedia sez the DOD considers police civilians.

Or Maybe Good Girl? My understanding is one of the cops was female. The account heard earlier indicated she was the first to confront him and took a bullet for her trouble. It was reported that a female officer has a leg wound so maybe she was the one to drop him. In any case my hats off to the LEOs.

Then SHE deserves the goddamned presidential medal of freedom.

"Never let a good crisis go to waste" - Churchill.

Any thing that can be used to score political points can and will be used. That has been around since politics has been around. Which is basically since 2 humans ever came into contact with each other.

The female was shot in the chest and air lifted. Was the male who kept going after being shot in the leg.

ironically had Scalise not been there neither would the security detail. Because he is in the Presidential line of succession the Capital Police were present.

Sad and disturbing. Not what this country needs. Thankfully the only fatality was the shooter himself.

Would be nice to keep partisan crap out of this thread...
