Shorty got the iPhone 4

The problem is you're going in there with a "avoid itunes" mindset which is not the design. You can't go around the designed software with copytrans and then complain when itunes doesn't like what you've done. Itunes is fussy, but it's a PITA to get around it. Most average apple users will use itunes as intended and have no issues. It's dummy proof but only if you use it as intended.

And there are hundreds of free apps. You're not looking. Before I got rid of my 3gs a few months ago I had hundreds of apps on there. 400 or so. Almost all of them free.

The itunes app and music stores are much better than the.phone versions and much easier to find free apps

OH hahaha! He killed his own iPhone.

You definitely messed it up when you used some unsupported third party software to manage your device.

This is a walled garden. It's a beautiful garden, but if you go outside the walls you're on your own...

Yep, been meaning to say, just use iTunes for now, then after you're comfortable with the OS and done some research, use something different.

Honestly, iTunes isn't that bad, and it's great for getting your contacts etc backed up. If I had an iPhone, I'd likely spring for Mobile Me for the convenience.

Android is much easier for contacts, calender, tasks and also pic uploading.
Your one Gmail account has all that and no "syncing" BS.
Oh, and documents too. But I still prefer regular emailing of documents.

Shorty, you know I love you man, but I had to fix that for you 😀

You can sync your google mail/contacts/calendar on iOS too...

As a semi-user of both Apple makes this easier. I don't use Google contacts, I use Outlook because that's what's more universal. Other than needing iTunes, the system is quite easy and seamless.

especially regarding contacts, its a huge leap backwards from android.

Uhh you can sync contacts the same way on both, but unlike Android, iOS doesn't compress your contact images to a crap resolution. Maybe they fixed that in 2.3 but as of 2.2 I had contact syncing disabled on my Droid because it would take a nice looking image and totally ruin it. It becomes painfully obvious when you use a full screen photo caller ID app. Of course this is moot to most people because Android doesn't do full screen caller ID photos natively. Something my 6 year old non smart phone did.

So can I use the apple people's excuse? That isn't using it as Google intended! Google didn't want to focus on having full screen caller ID because seriously who sits and stares at the incoming caller picture?

Note: I have no experience setting pictures for callers because it was all pre-set for me by facebook app.

Just set up your gmail as a Microsoft exchange account in ios and it will sync your calendar and contacts. It's even easier than android where it made me use the crappy gmail app by default after I set up my phone

Yes, my Google everything (Gmail, Calendar, Contacts) is synced instantly over the air to my iPhone and Macbook Air... there is no need to plug it into the computer. Any changes you make on your iPhone or iCal is instantly reflected and on the other devices since it pushes to Google.

...I mean the very first thing you did was try and ignore the ecosystem the phone is designed to work within, which you already knew existed prior to purchasing the phone. Who is at fault exactly?

I'm not trying to be mean shortylickens but this kinda sums it up. Unfortunately, and while there are tools to do so, you really shouldn't ignore iTunes for syncing apps and music to your iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I think it is kind of retarded that you must go through the iTunes gateway to access anything on your iPhone. I think iTunes needs a complete rewrite for speed and stability reasons but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

It's a walled garden and you really need to try and not cut through the hedges thinking it's a shortcut. The walled garden approach actually works quite well for the majority of folks. It's the very few minority that higher level access that will get frustrated. It definitely isn't for everyone and Android definitely has its place.

Honestly, start over. Look for the backup file on iTunes and delete it and see if that helps. If not, delete iTunes and start over. iTunes easily allows you to either have it manage your music for you (it'll move your files around which is a pain in the rear) or allow you to manage the music yourself. Once things are imported in iTunes you can easily create playlists and load different ones to suit whatever you're listening to at the moment.

If you're still going to give it another shot on the iPhone read below for some app suggestions that are free.

Have you read the articl on Daily Tech about Apple tracking iPhone and iPad user?

Android does it too...

Here things start to get unpleasant. Setting everything up was a huge hassle. On any Droid phone all you gotta do is give them your gmail account and everything takes care of itself automatically. If you wanna add other emails thats fine, but all account based stuff is done through email and I never had to log into anything after the first time.
By contrast the iphone 4 has me logging into my new Apple ID by way of my email, but its always a slow hassle without a physical keyboard and no easily accessible @ or .com symbols (I always have to dig for them). Plus it seems like every little thing on the phone needs me to log in by this ID, password and all. Got tiresome after the 5th entry. Setting up new email accounts on the phone was equally slow and annoying.
Verifying the email took an awfully long time and then some stuff made me go through an log in again.
If this is the apple users idea of "just works" and "so easy" I may have an unpleasant realization for them if they ever slip by the dark side.

Probably the worst part of the iOS experience is setting up the emails and stuff which you just did. I think this is one of the areas that needs a big upgrade. Lock screen widgets and a new notification update would be nice too.

App store made me give my credit card info before I could even look at the free stuff.
Here is where you should have checked the internet. I use iTunes gift cards. Apple iTunes has NEVER had a hold of my CC information.

Not much free stuff. And most of it stinks. However there is apparently a way to get one free app a day here as well. So I guess I dont need Amazon any more if I decide to switch over completely. Got some games like unblock me and such. They seem OK. Will use the onboard navigation before I play with any third party stuff.
The problem with not already being in the iTunes ecosphere is that you miss out on the good freebies. Those come out from time to time. One recent one was Enigmo 2 which is a fantastic puzzle game.Forget what the app du jour is but one thing is to get a free Flashlight app, some will do morse code as well. Great for using it as an emergency flashlight. You can check out freeappalert.com which updates every day at roughly noon EST with new apps that are free. Honestly, most are junk but you get the occasional gems such as the aforementioned Enigmo and Civilization Revolution.

It took you just over an hour to learn that you cannot fit this square peg of how the iPhone actually works into your round hole of a way you seem to want it to work.

Imagine, there are literally millions of happy iPhone users out there, who have had iPhones for years who have not had 1/1,000,000th of the problems you have had in just one hour.

Amazing.

Box it up, return it and go back to Android. Clearly, iOS is not for you.

Kind of agree. I've set up hundreds of iPhones and no one should be struggling this much using them unless they're punishing themselves solely to make some point with this forum.
