So I've been thinking about this, and this is my take on why the Suns made this move.
Shaq's got 2 years left after this one; his contract comes off the books in 2010. Coincidentally, that is also the year that Lebron can opt out of his contract, which seems to be likely.
I think the Suns are thinking, well let's roll with Shaq for the next couple years, get a boost in sales and keep fans interested; the real plan is to clear cap space to woo Lebron to join Amare in the quest for a championship. I think they'll draft a PG within the next two years or sign a young FA/trade for one, and go from there.
To me, this seems like one of the few logical reasonings for doing such a trade.
