As an Asian person, I can attest to the fact that "ching-chong-ah-so" is a racist statement. A very childish one too. You expect that from an elementary school kid.

I hope he bites his tongue off when he's trying to dunk over Yao Ming, so he can't speak anymore :|

I don't understand how making fun of a language can be racist...

Does that only go for Chinese or is it the same thing with other languages? If it is, please specify which languages, i wouldn't wanna be a racist by mistake....

It has to do with mocking another race or culture in a demeaning way. "ching-chong-ah-so" is a racist remark towards all Asian languages. It's based on the fact that the person using the slur doesn't care to differentiate between the languages. They just sound the same to him/her.

To understand why that (in particular) is a racist remark, I think you need to have been a kid growing up and have kids slant their eyes with their fingers and mockingly say, "ching-chong-ah-so". It hurt me as a kid growing up, so I can personally attest to that.

Well, if i say that i think chinese and other asian languages sound that way, does that make me a racist?

And i take it this only goes for asian languages then and no other, and only if the person is offended?

What if you saw a white guy speaking in ebonics, or worse yet, like a southern slave when making fun of a black man. Would that be considered "racist?"

The double standard continues to amaze me here.

If your intent was to belittle me, then yes, you are being racist.

If you just think Asian languages sound the same, then you're just stating that you know very little about Asian languages.

Yao Ming didn't say he was offended by the comments, but I still believe they were racist.

It's true that i know very little about asian languages, just as you probably couldn't tell the difference if i'm speaking swedish or danish, i could probably not tell the difference if you are speaking vietnamese or japanese...

I wouldn't want to belittle you, but just as "hurdy durdy murdy" is a joke made of the Swedish language "ching chong" is of the chinese language... i don't see either as racial, but maybe that is just because i am too naive...

I still don't think making fun of a language is racist... but i do think the expression "me love you long time" is racist, yet this is accepted by most americans as a joke...

If asians feel this was racist (as it should be), it is up to them to let the world know that shaq is a racist. They need to be more political. No one else is going to look after them. Blacks do it. Jews do it. It is now time for asians to start formulating PC organizations. Racism is based on competition and ignorance, among other things, and it is up to asians to expose racism within the american system so that it can be dealt with. If they choose to whine and be quiet, no one will care.

thats probably considered a "joke" by most americans because of its use in full metal jacket

as far as shaq, i believe he's proved time and time again what kind of an idiot he is. I guess he'll be shown up on the court

and as long as it is used in a movie, it is ok? i have watched roots, so i guess it's ok to use the "southern slave talking to his white master" stuff?

It's more cuturally insensitive than it is racist. When people make fun of Germans by speaking with a mock German Accent it is exactly the same thing. He wasn't making fun of an American with asian ancestry, he was making fun of a Chinese National. The idiot who wrote the article and those who feel it was racist need to pull their heads out of their asses.

I don't think it's racist either. However, most people DO think it's racist if one makes fun of how a black person speaks, or of how black people used to speak.

It's stereotyping, and making fun of a culture, not a race.

That said, there IS a double standard. If I made fun of Classy by speaking in ebonics or mimicking southern slave lingo, he would instantly call me a racist. Hell, I'd probably be banned from the board as well. But when this kind of thing is done to another culture or race, Classy denies that it is racism, and tells the person to get over it.

THAT, my friend, is the double standard I'm pointing out. I am not taking a stand on whether doing so is racist or not, as I don't believe it is. But rather I'm taking a stand against an obvious double standard.

The funny thing here is that Classy played right into the point I was trying to make.

No it isn't. You are making fun of him because of his race not because of his nationality or culture. You definately would deserve to be banned and I would support it 100%

"Ching chong" is not racist, but "yessah massah" is?

Both are linguistic and cultural, not racial. I believe you are suffering from the very double standard I spoke of.

How you can say this:

And then claim that doing the very same thing to a black person is somehow different defies all reason, Red. Culture and language are not races, right? That was the point you JUST made. Now explain to me how that rule cannot apply to so-called "Black cuture" but applies to Asian and Nordic cultures?

I'm talking about cultures from different countries not cultures based on race. If I were to make fun of an Asian American by talking in pigeon English then it would be racially insensitive. At best your argument nullifies my original statement.

The last thing I want to do is stick up for Shaq, but that is THE FUNNIEST thing I've ever heard!!! :D

I'd say the same thing. Actually, I got banned here for saying something similar. It's funny.

People need to learn to be able to laugh at themselves and not take everything so god-damned seriously.

I only see something like this as being racist if there is actual intent to harm present, and I don't see that here.

So making fun of the way rednecks talk is racist? If a black person makes fun of the way a white person talks, it's racist?

Come-on Red, it's getting pretty thin here. If it's only racist to make fun of the way balck people talk or their culture, but it's not racist to make fun of the way any other race speaks or their culture, there is a clear double standard.

Yep there is a double standard. You can thank the history of Racism in America for that.

I believe that is true, because here in Sweden we have no history of slavery and there is no double standard, the racists/neo-nazis (unfortunantly there are plenty of them here) refer to everyone who is not a swede as a "svartskalle" the direct translation is "blackskull" whether he comes from Italy, bosnia, africa or whatever...

(EDIT: we do have a history of slavery, but our slaves were poor Swedes)

*sigh*

Once again, the great racism debate flares up in ATOT.

Face it, everyone's said something that could be conceived as racist at some point in their life. If you deny you haven't, you're lying to yourself and need to be slapped into reality.

For the record, and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, I do agree with Amused on this one, probably for the first time ever.
