I remember years ago when Shaq went to Greece to play in the Olympics. A reporter asked him if he had gone to the Parthenon. Shaq replied with: "Yeah, we have been to all the cool night clubs." LOL

Shaq also said, "I'm like the Pythagorean theorem. Not too many people know the answer to my game."

Anyone listen to The Jungle? You know, Jim Rome's radio show? They talked about exactly this for most of the show today.

Racist? Maybe...

Bigoted? Absolutely.

What if Yao Ming had said/done these things:

------------------------
"Tell Shaq, "Yessah massah, I be playin' good basketball."

"When Shaq was brought up, Yao Ming spoke with a mock Southern black slave accent and made mock cotton picking moves."

Threatened to test Shaq's toughness with lynching?
----------------------------

What if this happened?

"The only reason anyone knows about Yao's latest taunt is because Fox Sports Radio's Tony Bruno Morning Extravaganza played a
recording of the taunt several times to its nationwide audience on December 16 and 17. On the latter day, Bruno commented that Yao's
comment was "not racist," and then invited listeners and radio commentators to call in jokes making racist fun of Black culture. For
hours, people cracked jokes, such as offering free watermellons to increase Black attendance at basketball games."

-------------------------

Come on, guys. If watermellon jokes are racist, why aren't bicycling Chinese jokes or fortune cookie give-aways?

Why the double standard? Why, if I speak in a mock southern slave accent, I'm racist, but if I speak in a mock Chinese accent I'm not?

assuming i worked in a company with only one black employee, and i went around talking in ebonics and talking about slaves. would that be accepted? i think not. as amused said, there should be no double standard.

too often asians are persecuted because society views them as easy to pick on, which unfortunately they are. there should be no reason shaq should be able to call yao a ching-chong when yao can't call him a stupid awesome dude. joking or not, the comment was blatently bigoted.

"The Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal said he was joking, not being a racist, when he used a mock Chinese accent while talking about Houston center Yao Ming.

A columnist for AsianWeek complained in his newspaper that O'Neal made several derogatory comments recently about Yao, with the Lakers' center saying, "Tell Yao Ming, 'ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh."'

"I said it jokingly, so this guy was just trying to stir something up that's not there. He's just somebody who doesn't have a sense of humor, like I do. I don't have to have a response to that (the charges of racism) because the people who know me know I'm not," O'Neal said Friday before Los Angeles' game against Cleveland.

"I mean, if I was the first one to do it, and the only one to do it, I could see what they're talking about. But if I offended anybody, I apologize."

Yao, asked about the comments prior to Houston's game at Atlanta, said he believed O'Neal was joking.

"There are a lot of difficulties in two different cultures understanding each other. Especially two very large countries. The world is getting smaller and I think it's important to have a greater understanding of other cultures. I believe Shaquille O'Neal was joking but I think that a lot of Asian people don't understand that kind of joke," Yao said.

"Chinese is hard to learn. I had trouble with it when I was little," Yao joked.

O'Neal recently received an NAACP Young Leaders Award.

He acknowledged that his attempts at humor don't always work..."

[AP Report]

Looks like Yao's handling this well.

I'm really shocked that a lot of people seem to be able to shrug this off as not a big deal. Yes I'm Chinese and so perhaps my perspective is a bit tainted, but I think that ANY sortof comment like that should be frowned upon, especially if you're someone like Shaq who people look up to (no pun intended), and someone that is setting an example. Whether it be against black, hispanic, asian, irish, polish, russian, whatever!

Also comparing Shaq's comment to Lott's comment is completely different in my opinion. Lott simply said something to the effect of America would be better if Strom was elected President. He did not say "If Strom was elected and therefore segregation was still alive and strong, America would be a better place". Shaq *DID* however make a comment that directly attacks chinese people, and other people who speak languages similar to chinese.

I don't see where people can draw the line and make it out to be that its OK for Shaq to make those comments because they're not truly racist, only because Chinese really isn't a race? WTF does that mean? How does that make blacks a race then? Blacks are a race because of their skin color. Well guess what, Chinese (or Asian, or oriental or whatever u want to call it) people have a different skin color too. And while Shaq's comments don't DIRECTLY attack someone's skin color, they DO attack what is considered a stereotype against YELLOW skinned people (I'm sorry that they don't call us yellows here to make it racist for some of you people). The fact that they can't speak English and talk with marbles in their mouths.

If I made a comment in reference to Shaq or another black basketball player where I attempted to immitate someone speaking ebonics or rapping, I think the black community would cry foul and label me a racist.

I think its really interesting how so many people can shrug this off and think that it isn't a big deal. I'm not saying Shaq should be chastised for this, but I am shocked that our culture is one that shuns using the "n" word because it is derogitory against black people, but they have no problems with someone making a derogitory comment against a chinese person.

Black people always say that white people don't understand what its like to be a minority and that they need to be in the black person's seat to know how it feels. I suppose that holds true in this situation too. I don't think white (and perhaps even black) people understand what its like. I've been called names all throughout my childhood for being chinese or asian or whatever you want to call it. And I would consider all of those to be racist comments, including Shaq's. A TEACHER did the same thing to me (Called me "Ching-Chong") when I was in the 8th grade, and the school told me that it wasn't a big enough deal to make a stink about it. I *should* have hired a lawyer and sued the school, but I just wasn't smart enough back then. Perhaps it was in jest, but it still isn't right for him to make that comment on National TV (or wherever it appeared, radio, etc).. and then shrug it off as if it wasn't a big deal. Its like telling the entire nation that its OK to make fun of chinese people and the way they speak. I know for a fact that many black people would not like it if the opposite were done to them. As a nation that is supposed to believe in equality, I'm really surprised that people don't think anything of this. (There are some of us who do ... But it sounds like a lot of you don't really think its a big deal).

I'm sensitive to stuff like this and I don't find what he said a big deal. Its deprecating but nothing more than a litte trash talking. Its alot more loaded if a whitey trash talks a black in a derogatory manner because whites here sh!t on blacks for so long, but what Shaq said wasn't loaded, just a bit shallow.

That said, Shaqs a woos anyways. I'll bet in his whole career he doesn't connect on a single punch on the court before he retires. He's atleast 0/2 so far. Anyone see that roundhouse overhand sissy slap at brad miller? (even if it would've killed him if it connected :D)

January 17 is a great opportunity for Yoa to show what he's made of, and if he's smart he'll 'attack' shaq early and often. :)

You know I read this bs so much. Obviously a lot of morons like you never get out. Blacks make fun blacks. There is so much fun poked at the black culture on TV and in the movies it ain't funny. No other race group has had more stereotypes made about them in fun than blacks. Give me a freaking break with this garbage. Most of the time some of you white boys are always looking for any lil thing to say see look those blacks are racist. Please if you cant handle humor go live in a cave. Get a life.

That Swedish chef in the muppet show has to go! If shaquille was racist for making fun of the chinese language, then the swedish chef is racist for making fun of the Swedish language...

That is not a valid comparison. For one, the muppet isn't a real person. Secondly, I believe the swedish chef in the muppet show is supposed to be Swedish. By your account, then Apu from the Simpsons is also racist because he isn't really Indian, he isn't anything at all!

Shaq is a real person who obviously isn't Chinese and is trying to poke fun at the Chinese. As I said in my previous post, if someone was to do the same thing towards black people, I think the black community would be upset about it.

The swedish chef in the muppet show sounds to me like i would sound to you if i try to speak chinese... Sure, it is meant as a joke, but so was shaq's attemt at speaking chinese...

And your Apu example isn't valid, he speaks english with an accent... besides, i think neither of the three mentioned are racist for making fun of a language...

Realize that it's a joke, build a bridge and yada yada yada...

I just read this a few days ago, and it confirms that Shaq is a complete idiot.

As an Asian person, I can attest to the fact that "ching-chong-ah-so" is a racist statement. A very childish one too. You expect that from an elementary school kid.

I hope he bites his tongue off when he's trying to dunk over Yao Ming, so he can't speak anymore :|
