We all make imitations, like the Kwik-E-Mart guy being Indian, or vegetable pickers in the fields as Mexicans, and we make their fake accents. In Shaq's case, it was most likely directly towards Ming to make fun of him and his lack of english skills. Sometimes a joke goes a bit too far.

actually i read somewhere that his english skills really aren't that bad, and he doesn't even need a translator

thats not true at all. his english has come a long way but ive seen recent interviews and he definetely still needs a translator

As a long time Laker fan and having lived in Los Angeles for 23 years, I find Shaq's comment to be very inappropriate. I'm pretty sure Shaq isn't a rascist but his comments dishearten me. He is in a competitive business and trashtalking will be involved but he does not have to mock the Chinese ethnicity and at the very least make a formal apology to the Asian community. Having read this article reminded me of what happened to me THIS MORNING. Here's the story:

I was driving north on the Hollywood freeway on my way to work in traffic and it was, as usual, bumper to bumper. So this guy in front of me thinks I'm tailgating him and starts to brake abruptly. He changes lane and I pull up next to him and he rolls down his window and tells me to get off his ass. Then I told him that we're in freakin' traffic. Then he tells me that I can't see well because my eyes are slanted. I wanted to go off on him but didn't want to stoop to his level so I just drove passed him as traffic had just cleared up. I wanted to forget about this incident but this just brought the memory back.

He's a ballplayer, not an ambassador. Sure, it wasn't polite, but I can't bring myself to care what Shaq says...

Didn't you get the memo? Only white people can be racist.

No one deserves an elbow in their face.
I think Shaq was just describing his game when he said he would throw an elbow in his face. That's how he plays. He is garbage.

oversized chimp?? shaq didnt even go that far. by whats being said in this thread you sure qualify as a racist too

Surely, everyone would agree that any type of racial stereotype of any Black individual would be an instant and loud headline, with all of the phony liberal elitists coming out of the woodwork to make the quickest and loudest condemnation.
Look at the ridiculous reaction to Senator Lott's comments last month.

democrats have to protect their ingnorat ass constituents, w/out them their party would fold

From now 'til eternity, people will be picked on. I'm not saying it's good, but it's a part of life, and people need to learn to let insults roll off them, so to speak.

Sure, Shaq is a tool. Many, if not most, NBA observers are aware of this. But the NBA doesn't need to police everything he says. Shaq has created a little feud between himself and Yao. There are, and have been, feuds between players all over the NBA. They will fine you for hitting someone. But not for making fun of someone. Unless the victim was a ref.

"Asian America" can't let Shaq's remarks convince them that they're oppressed. People are made fun of for all sorts of reasons, not just race or language. Yeah, blacks probably do get more protection than any other race. That's probably due to the grievous injustices that their ancestors suffered in this country. But nobody is about to outlaw mocking. And it doesn't just happen on the basis of race. Just ask Jerry Krause...

edit: Just to clarify, I think that what Shaq said was inappropriate, foolish, and unkind. But the discipline that the writer called for just ain't gonna happen. Shaq didn't say anthing hateful. He's just messing with Yao's head, trying to get a mental advantage. But it's just not really different from one player calling another soft, fat, ugly, no shot, whatever. Jordan didn't cry when Jeff Van Gundy called him a "con man." He just went and dropped 50 on the Knicks.

Ive had this problem for a long time now. Yes, I understand that African Americans have gone through a lot to get out of the racist problems they have had in the past but I dont think they have the right to act the way some of them act. They get away with a lot of racist remarks and actions and I dont think its right. Just one example that really gets to me is the music video station BET. Now if there was a show that was called White Entertainment, would there be problems and issues? You bet there would be.

If there was a magzine the total opposite of Ebony, would there be a problem?

Let s not beat around the bush. If a white player had, for instance, made monkey sounds to taunt a black player, it would have been

Okay...i was seriously reading the article up to this point. Monkey sounds to taunt a black player? I would say this completely discredits the author and such a racist comparison is much worse than what actually may have transpired where Shaq is concerned. I hate shaq for other reasons but in this case i think he was just being humorous but respects Yao and his culture, and yes I believe it happened.

That story makes me sad. :( I'm sorry that happened to you, neovan.

The Shaq thing is disappointing... and the fact that this happened: "Fox Sports Radio s Tony Bruno Morning Extravaganza played a recording of the taunt several times to its nationwide audience on December 16 and 17. On the latter day, Bruno commented ! that Shaq s comment was "not racist," and then invited listeners and radio commentators to call in jokes making racist fun of Chinese. For
hours, people cracked jokes, such as offering free bike parking to increase Chinese attendance at basketball games." makes me sick.

Peace,
Dezign

It's more *acceptable* for people in general to make jokes at the expense of asians over black or mexican people. That's just the way it is here.

And please, can the "it's a nationality not a race" argument. Sub in discriminatory or prejudice if you like. The idea is the same, it's hate directed at a group of people. If you make jew jokes, is that not racist also because the jews "aren't a race"??

It's too bad there are basically no asian activist groups or this problem would be much smaller. Unfortunately from what I see, asian participation in US politics is really poor.

"None of this would have happened if Strom had become President."

Muwahahahahaha

I think this reporter needs a reality-checking elbow to the head. Shaq is being an idiot and should drop it or make an attempt to explain his actions. Otherwise, this reporter is full of crap.

It's a deragotary remark. But trash talk in NBA is like rice in fried rice.

That is true that american asian lobbyist group is not as prominent as NAACP, ADL, or CAIR. But foreign asian groups were good friends of the Clintons ;);).

I know this is a touchy subject because there are lots of Asian members here, but I always considered asians on the same "level playing field" as whites. As a white guy, it doesn't bother me if people make fun of my race or make generalizations about me based on race (we can't dance, jump, appreciate soccer, have small peckers, our necks turn red when we're out in the sun, oppress every other culture/religion/ethnic group throughout history,... blah blah blah). I always considered my asian friends "thick skinned" like most of my white friends because we really don't have a lot to complain about today. If I crack them about their driving, the fishy smell of their food, or the accents of their parents, they crack right back on me.

Sure, it's a double standard, but big deal! Mark Madsen isn't going to whine if Shaq makes fun of his white-boy dance... and I don't think Yao cares what Shaq says. Shaq cracks on lots of people and usually looks like an ignorant, spoiled, doofus when he does.

But I am calling Shaq out. Come on down to Chinatown, Shaq. You disrespect Asian America, and we will break you down.

I find this part awfully funny. Do you know how many average sized people it would take to "break [Shaq] down?" There's a billion people in China, not in Chinatown.
