Ok, i joined a gym and have been going regularly 3-4 times a week since march '02. I've only managed to gain about 10 pounds since but was hoping for a real improvement. I really don't see much difference in my body size or weight. I want to gain weight but not flab muscle. I'm currently 5 '11 130 and I wanna reach at least 145 in a month and a half. Is that possible? What kind of supplements should I take if any? I eat about 3-4 full meals a day, but still my weight doesn't change much.

<--- 5'11" 135lbs,
i've tried to gain weight but have also not been able to keep it on at all... after excersizing and playing lacrosse for 3 years i was able to get up to 145 for a short while.. but as soon as i stopped working out and went to college i lost it almost immediately.. 3 years later.. still havent been able to get it back. I'd like to get up to at least 150.

i know exactly what you mean. I am 5 10 135. I am now 17, but have only gained about 10 pounds since my freshman year of HS. It probably doesnt help that i am a xc runner......:)

It's not that I"m complaining but the rest of my family and friends do. Plus, I look skinner that I should, even though I'm at 130. That's why I want to build up some body muscles to get bigger.

Eat.

I'm built the same way you are. You're going to have to force yourself to eat, eat, eat... without those calories, your body can't build itself up.

Eat healthy, of course, but you're going to have to train yourself to eat, eat, eat.

I'm 5'10" and 150lbs and considered small for hockey. Teammates tell me to eat 6 times a day with smaller meals each time. That WILL do it... along with some regular lifting like you're doing, of course. I haven't been able to get myself to eat smaller meals though - I always feel the need to get really full and end up eating only 3 meals/day anyway. Hopefully this advice will help you if I'm too dumb to listen to it.

if you want to gain weight, just eat until you feel you cant eat anymore. Then eat some more. Change your workout to low rep high weight. Forget about doing cardio. You'll gain mass (muscle AND fat). After you feel you have gained enough weight, start a diet to lose all of the extra fat pounds. Suppliment with L-Glutamine (amino acid) which helps keep the muscle you have while losing fat.

There are plenty of ways/routines/plans to do this. Check out google and the bodybuidling.com forums.

good luck.

Whey protien is designed to build muscle. Use it as a supplement to meals, you should drink a serving maybe 3 or more times a day. one during the day, one after your workout, and one before bed. I should be having 400 some grams or more of protien a day, but it would be impossible eating nothing but meat and eggs and what not. Whey is a time savor and it will help you get big. Don't expect steriod like gains haha, but yes, it is a supplement that everyone who works out and plans on getting big should have.

supesman, use t-mag for it's articles, not the products. IT's got so much information it's ridiculous.

The whey i use is Designer Whey protien, GLYCERLEAN. It's good stuff, and is time released so it doesnt go to waste like other protiens.

My football coach always told us to eat a peanut butter sandwich and drink a glass of whole milk before going to bed.
I never did but I can imagine that combo adding that pounds. :)

Would you recommend getting a product like GLYCERLEAN from GNC or are those big chains a rip-off? Buy online?

Given your body type gaining that amount of weight in 45 days is not reasonable. I could do it but I have a different body type (I have to work to stay lean).

10 pounds in 5 months isn't bad - keep forcing a lot of food down your throat. Food filled with protein and eat a bunch before bed as well to digest while you sleep.

3-4 full meals? ha!

dude, you wanna gain weight? you gotta really effort man, not this 3-4 meals crap....we need to talk about 5-6 meals. 3 of those must come AFTER 9pm. Do not eat anything that is "lite, light, lowfat, skim, etc" that doesn't cut it.

Ice Cream always helps. lots and lots of ice cream. Breyers mint chocolate chips.

Pizza always helps too. lots of meats on top. extra cheese. We're talking bellyfull of fat here man

the KEY is to eat over 1000 calories right before hitting the sack. Feel that insulin spike as you are drugged by too much food

Fried chicken and chips help too

10 lbs of muscle since March? That's not that bad, I think you expect too much. Gaining 30-40 lbs of pure muscle in a year is highly unlikely for most people. 15 lbs in 45 days is NOT possible without chemical assistance.

You have to eat to gain weight. Most skinny people that "can't gain weight" (and fatties that "can't lose weight") have no clue how much they're eating in a day. If you have to, map it all out on paper and track exactly what you're eating. Push your caloric intake up an extra 500-1000 cal/day and hold that for a week or two. If you're not gaining weight, increase the cal/day again, until you are gaining. Force food down your throat at least 6 times a day. Get a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Consume some of that protein in the form of a post-workout drink (immediately after the workout). Eat fat and carbs for the rest of the calories.

Weight gain is always some combination of muscle and fat. When you think you're getting too fat, go on a diet and take steps to preserve the muscle you've built. The bottom line is that if you don't overfeed and are unwilling to accept any fat gain at all, your growth will be very slow or nonexistent.
