I'm not familiar with whats involved in working up an estimate for a boiler.

While you may be correct in your deduction they are looking for "suckers" I could think of reasons why they might have decided not to work up an estimate without the reason being to find "suckers"

maybe he was just lazy. He was supposed to do a manual J heat loss calculator to come up with a correctly sized boiler for the place. I think I might've mentioned going with the company that can give me the best value one too many times. He picked up on that I am cheap and most likely can't afford their prices. who knows.

from what i cna gather he is the landlord.

but then again i don't believe much he says.

I'm talking about the check-cashed but is lost thread. Towards the end he let out that he is a landlord, and then was accused that he was the landlord of the thread he started, although he claimed to be the tenant who also happened to be a landlord himself.

I'm betting that in this case he has no windows

At least you didn't take it personally and posted a thread on it.
Which pretty much puts you in the category of "normal person" as opposed to..well, you get my point.😉

Cliffs:

wanted to spend thousands of dollars on a luxury
couldn't make up my mind even with multiple estimates
passed up estimates well under budget
refused to take no for an answer and continued to haggle
misrepresented events to gain sympathy
blamed others for answering the question i asked
still have nfc why jimmy walked

fixed

Wow. The amount of hate in this thread is appalling. Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I did not try to nickel and dime the guy. We were trying to work with him on a different solution to make it fit in our budget.

The proposal was $2500 for 3 rooms. The windows are really long and one room has a large arch window which requires some additional work.

I asked if he could do it for $2100 and then $2300 which was above our $2000 budget. Since he did not accept either of those offers we asked to substitute some of the stylings to get it to fit the budget. Obviously he didn't have the time or want to be bothered.

It just shocked me that he basically said F YOU. You're not worth my time. Go find someone else that will help you.

And edit he wasn't the cheapest. His proposal was in the middle at $2500. The others were $1600 and $3200.

LOL, that's bullshit. How is him declining to do business with you equivalent to him saying F YOU? You're such a dumbass. He sounded pretty PROFESSIONAL in his email. You're just making shit up b/c you took it personally. "Shocked"...LOL.

I bet you think anyone that says "no" to you in one way or another is saying "F YOU" to you.

My wife and can't make up our fucking minds, so we expect extra hand-holding and wet-nursing.

I would have fired you too. I'm in business to make money.

All of the projects were over our budget.

You should have done some homework and visited showrooms yourself and decided what you wanted in advance before you went and wasted this guy's time. The problem is that you are in the design and research phase, but are dealing with someone who works in the implementation phase, and your respective expectations don't match, but that is entirely your fault. His only mistake was trying to help you, but you wanted a mile.

My wife and I have been looking to install some blinds on a couple windows in our home. I use homeadvisor (formally service magic) for smaller projects like these in the past. The website usually connects you with 3 companies for estimates - which was the case here.

So they all come out and give us estimates. My wife and I also aren't really sure what we want in the windows. There are so many different solutions - shutters, wood, faux wood, cellular, etc. We basically asked the companies for their opinions on what would look the best.

The one company we like the best was this guy Jimmy. He was really nice and helpful and was the cheapest as well. The only problem was all of the projects were over budget. I asked him if he could do it for $xxxx which he declined. I asked if he would split the difference and basically told me that is the price - non negotiable.

So my wife and I started to figure out what could we "downgrade" in order to fit the budget and these are the replies

Me:

Jimmy:

I told him upfront that we were getting estimates from other companies but it wasn't just going to come down to price. There are other emails where he kind of gives us an attitude for trying to come up with a different solution.

So in that final email he just tells me he's "pulling the quotes and proposals" because it seems as though he is fed up dealing with us. Just to be clear - he only came to my home twice. The second time was because he messed up measuring something and wanted it to be 100% correct.

Cliffs:

Want to buy window treatments
Used 3rd party service for estimates
Referred to 3 companies
Picked a company but tried to re-work the estimated based on budget
Company got mad and pulled estimates
If he's actually been to your house several times, on his dime, getting paid NOTHING, over SHUTTERS, yeah he is pulling his proposals. It's not like he's putting his kids through college every time he makes a sale. Why are you taking so long? Why are you costing him his time and money over something so small?

I guarantee he's making a thread on a shutters forum complaining about a customer who won't make up his mind and is wasting his time.

yeah sure. When I tell you that my budget is $2000 then why are you showing me things that would push the price above it? Its not like I was shown a book with prices in it. If I'm choosing a solution that is expensive it would be nice to be guided in a direction for something thats similar but less expensive.

I told Jimmy straight up that I knew nothing about blinds. We wanted something that looked nice and kept the sun out.

Since this is a tech forum I'll use this scenario

Grandma: hey TJ can u build me a computer?
TJ: Sure, what do you want/need?
Grandma: I don't know. I just want to read emails from my grandkids and shop QVC. My budget is $1000
TJ: Ok, here <shows proposal build> this computer is really nice and would do everything you need. Its $1500.
Grandma: wow, it is nice but its out of my budget. can you build it for $1000?
TJ: no, thats the price
Grandma: well, if I don't send you some b-day money and I cut out my monthly medication then I can do $1300.
TJ: F YOU GRANDMA! You're wasting my time!

How about something like this

TJ: Grandma, well lets see here. Maybe we can substitute this SSD for a slower 5400 hdd. Maybe you don't need a 27" monitor....how about a 21"?
Grandma: Well, I really like the SSD but maybe we can do a 7200/SSD hybrid drive. I think I can live with a 21" monitor. Lets go with that. How much is it?
TJ: We can do that for $1000!
Grandma: Great!
I think I've detected the problem. You were talking to the wrong kind of company. What you seem to need is a decorator. What you attempted to do was get a salesman to be a decorator. They're different jobs.
