Sequels that far surpassed CRAPTASTIC original games, *NOT GOOD ORIGINALS*

Are there any games out there you can think of that developers took a mediocre IP in a top notch direction?

The only one I can think of is the leap from Assassin's Creed to AC II, which was superb.

agreed warcraft 2 was great. don't think 3 was as good.

The Witcher 2. TW1 wasn't a bad game, but TW2 definitely was a HUGE improvement over it.

BG 2 was better perhaps, but far surpassing a mediocre BG1? Nah. I'd also disagree with the previous suggested HL. Assassin's Creed and Warcraft did come to mind for me as well, though. I can think of quite a few sequels that improved nicely on the original (The Witcher 2) but that's not to say the original was mediocre.

Warcraft was the first game to come to mind.

Castlevania is a console game where the sequel was far superior to the original. I think Zelda 2 was better as well, but the original was no slouch.

Getting back to PC games; Gal Civ 2 was far superior to Gal Civ 1. In the same vein, Fallen Enchantress was FAR superior to Elemental.

I think Assassin's Creed 2 is the right answer. Half-life was never mediocre, but genre-defining game. It's still playable and enjoyable and you can't say that about many FPS from that time.
Jazz Jack Rabbit 2 was way better than the first instalment.

what?! Civ 1 mediocre? pah! It was amazing! 13 year old me will come beat you up for saying that! Same with AoE.

Now granted I didn't play nearly as much civ 2, but I don't think it was as groundbreaking as 1.
AoE 2 I actually never played though.. I'm just fond of the original. If I'm wrong Aoe2 must be seriously outstanding.
