Soon enough, I knew two kinds of people:
People who used AIM
People who used AIM and ICQ together.

or people that use Trillian! =)

My colleague (and mentor) was the creator of UTBuddy. It was a buddy list for you to see where your buddies last played UT and how long ago. He spent many hours on it, even creating little neat graphics for it along with taking in some beta feedback. Many research hours were spent, all for a program to be handed out for free. I know what it's like to create something cool and sharing with others. Many programmers know this feeling. You do things to challenge yourself and keep your skills fresh, all the while making something simpler for someone somewhere.

With that said, good job on your new creation. I'm glad you created something useful (and making it available free of charge). Don't mind some paranoid freaks on this forum. Some people need to learn to criticize without calling people names. You can't expect 100% maturity on an internet messageboard.

As for UTBuddy... the server that housed the server-side code had a harddrive failure... and being a guy that lived on the edge... he didn't have anything backed-up. Hundreds of users were out of luck. The proggy was noted on the front page of PlanetUnreal.com at one time. RIP UTBuddy. Good luck with MessageServer. Hope you get a nice following.

TazX2k, you referred to yourself as "we" back when you said "we know how many unique people used it. this is so we can keep track of how many new people are using it." Who is the "we"?

I would be the other half of that "we". I help with development and am the webmaster.

I only read about halfway through the first page and got disgusted with the replies, so here goes:

If you don't want to use it, then just forget that it exists. (I don't plan on ever using it)
Don't accuse the author of spying on you when you willingly give him a message to send to a friend.
If you don't feel comfortable sending a personal message to a close person then don't use it for that. Or make it not so personal.
Kudos to you, TazX2k for developing a product for free and making it available to our community.

i like this idea! Thanks bro!

BTW, it would be a good idea to have a written privacy policy on your site which lays down what you do and dont do with the SNs you gather.

okay okay, now messageserver does NOT keep a list of the screen names, but instead it hashes all the sn's and it keeps the hashes, since its a one way hash algorithm, i cannot get a list of the sn's. now i know if a user is unique without logging screen names.
