Re: accusations of him being a bigot. I think that he's separating a person from their actions, that being the point of his statements, and in that way he is trying to avoid being a bigot.

The question is, what do you call intolerance? From his point of view, he's being tolerant by distinguishing between a person and their actions, so he can approve of a person while disapproving of their lifestyle choices, much in the same way that we could accept a culture that has traditions different and perhaps abhorent to our own but not approve of what they do. You can call him a bigot for wanting to preserve his own "group" - the heterosexual family structure - but you have to admit that there isn't any long term evidence yet for what family structure provides the best support for children.
